Re: The Tamil Chair at the University of Toronto

We are pleased to inform you that an agreement has been reached to establish a Tamil Chair at the Unive r s i ty o f Toronto Scarborough. The unprecedented global support received from the Tamil community for the Harvard Tamil Chair endeavor is a clear indication of the need for similar Chairs in other universities as well as the desire to support such causes.

Tamil is one of the few classical languages of the world that continues to have a strong literary tradition and presence today. Many of the other classical languages have benefited from research and progressive studies at various international academic institutions over the years. Hence, it is only fitting that Tamil too should find its place in an academic institution of repute and prestige. The University of Toronto is 190 years old and boasts a #1 ranking in Canada. It has educated three Governors General of Canada, four Prime Ministers, 14 Justices of the Supreme Court, 10 Nobel Laureates, 3 Turing award winners and 94 Rhode Scholars.

Per the agreement in place, the endowment of $3.0 million for the Tamil Chair at the University of Toronto must be fully funded within a 2 year period. On the date of the inauguration of the Tamil Chair held in Toronto on 25 June, 2018 an amount of $700,000 was raised from Tamils in USA, India and Canada. We are now charged with raising the remaining $2.3 million within the two year period stipulated.

Tamil population in Canada is more than 300,000 and Tamils also comprise a significant number of University of Toronto alumni. We are therefore confident we will be able to raise the required funds to

establish the Tamil Chair. Toronto will thus become the de facto centre for Tamil language outside of Indian subcontinent and also serve as a guiding light for similar institutions engaged in Tamil studies and research. This will undoubtedly enhance the global recognition of Tamil and solidify the prospects of its continued use and growth for the benefit of generations that follow.

All donations received towards this endowment will be entered and displayed as a permanent record at the University of Toronto.
