Changing South Tampa

One Sweet BiteAt A Time

By Ronda M. Parag

Patrick Ruddell and his wife, Zezura, have created a frenzy of sweet lovers in asmall strip center across from Plant HighSchool in South Tampa. On weekends, the line extends out the door and a waitup to 45 minutes for the custom-flavoredmini-doughnuts.

Opening only four months ago, theRuddell’s latest business venture has beena sweet success. So far, Patrick estimatesthey have sold over a quarter million minidoughnuts and goes through over 100’s ofpounds of toppings per week. During theweek, the hot, made-to-order mini’s arevanilla flavored, but on weekends there ismore staff to have additional seasonalflavors and chocolate doughnuts. Creatingthe made-to-order mini doughnutsrequires customers to wait, and they mostcertainly don’t seem to mind. Many of thetoppings mimic ice cream flavors includingsprinkles, candy pop rocks, peanut buttercups and more.

Ordering is an easy 4 step process, step 1 select the cake doughnut, step 2select the icing or coating, step 3 selectthe creative toppings and step 4 select ayummy drizzle. Currently there are 16

Favorite Combos, but creativity and origi-nality are encouraged for endless options.Patrick’s favorite is a customized PeanutButter Cup with a vanilla cake doughnutwith peanut butter icing, peanut buttercups and Reese’s drizzle, however, thenumber one seller is Sweet Pig — a vanillacake doughnut with maple icing and bacon.Patrick says they go through roughlybetween 100 lbs of bacon per week.

Serial entrepreneurs, the Ruddellsopened Mini Doughnut Factory to teachtheir children how to operate a business.Daughter, Aryanna, 12, works at honingher customer service, sales and decoratingskills and son Jordyn, 14, is learning aboutthe baking and business operations.“We’ve never worked so hard, but had somuch fun,” said Patrick and Zezura.

Early Childhood Renovation

Saint Paul’s is delighted to announce that we will begin the 2016-17 school year with a $1.1 million dollar renovation to our Early Childhood building. The 13,000 square foot building will be redesigned to look like an adorable little town with each classroom playing an essential role in the community as the post office, pet clinic, bank, sweet shoppe or fire station. Everything will be “pint-sized” to make the experience of coming to school each day magical

and memorable for our youngest students.

Saint Paul’s will be opening its own virtual school called Clearwater Virtual in the fall of 2016. Clearwater Virtual will be the only virtual school in Pinellas County to offer courses through Virtual Schools of Excellence, a program fully

There is still time to visit the Museumof Fine Arts’ exhibition ContemplatingCharacter: Portrait Drawings & Oil Sketchesfrom Jacques-Louis David to Lucian Freud, thatwill be on display at the museum throughMay 29, 2016. The exhibition features 152rare portrait drawings and oil sketches fromthe late eighteenth into the twenty-firstcentury, drawn from the remarkablecollection of Robert Flynn Johnson.

Lucian Freud, one of our time’s mostprovocative portrait painters and thegrandson of the pioneering psychoanalystSigmund Freud, once noted: “I’ve alwayswanted to create drama in my pictures, which is why I paint people. It’s people whohave brought drama to pictures from thebeginning. The simplest human gesturestell stories.”

In addition to David and Freud, otherworks by selected such artists include:Théodore Rousseau, Edgar Degas, ÉdouardVuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Elie Nadelman,Frank Stella, and George Bellows. Fourdrawings are by Adolf von Menzel, whosename may be unfamiliar to many Americans. He was one of Germany’s most admiredartists working in the nineteenth century.Degas called him “the greatest living master.”

There are two portraits of Jacques-LouisDavid, one while he was in prison. Asupporter of the French Revolution, Davidwas imprisoned after the fall of Robespierreand later found favor with Napoleon. Thereare others of the English Romanticpoet-artist William Blake, American authorWashington Irving, influential Britishcritic-artist John Ruskin, French symbolistOdilon Redon, and the great Americanrealist Thomas Eakins in silhouette.

The exhibition has many other gems, including a miniature portrait of GeorgeWashington (around 1795), by ananonymous artist and Bonnard’s CryingWoman (about 1890-1895), created in aflowing, seemingly spontaneous line.

Contemplating Character was organizedby Robert Flynn Johnson with LandauTraveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles,California, in association with DenenbergFine Arts, West Hollywood, California.

True ColorsTampa Resident Reveals True Colors in Newly Designed L.A. TownhouseBy Mary Lou Janson

right, bold and a bit unconventional. What describes a newly decorated, vibrantly designed, Los Angeles

townhouse owned by a prominentTampa family, applies to more than justthe stylish space; it’s also an apt descriptionof homeowner Candy DeBartolo, whocollaborated with Tampa Bay designprofessional Enrique Crespo, to furnishand finish rooms to reflect her fashionsense, fearlessness and individuality.

Moving from a cozy L.A. condo thatformerly served as Candy’s home-away-from-her-Tampa-home, to the larger,three-level townhouse, offered lots ofopportunities to add her signature flairthroughout the living and dining areas, outdoor patio, third floor bedrooms andthree-and-a-half bathrooms.

“I just wanted this to be differentfrom my house in Tampa,” DeBartolosaid. “I wanted a space to call my own.I have great friends out there and Iwant them to enjoy my surroundings. Ilove it in L.A. and so do my daughters. It’s such a different experience there. Ilove people watching. I love the fashions, the restaurants, the shopping, theweather and I love the people.”

That point-of-view, and some of thedwelling’s accompanying views, areapparently shared by her neighborsthat include Candy Spelling, PaulaAbdul and Ralph Lauren’s nephew.

Hoping to entertain guests at thenew address by the first of this year,Candy knew just who to call to fasttrack making her home move-in ready.Crespo, principal at the Tampa-basedCrespo DesignGroup, impressedCandy with the inspired ideas heintroduced to the South Tampa homesof her daughters, Nikki DeBartolo andLisa DeBartolo Miggs, as well as, areasof her own Tampa residence.

Another family-owned property, anew Carrollwood restaurant namedSacred Pepper, has also been entrustedto Crespo’s eye for design.

“Enrique is such a master ofspace,” Candy said referring to her L.A.home. “We have some curved walls, but he found a wonderful curvedcouch. It all just works. I think wecomplement each other’s tastes.Enrique is so fun to work with. We hadlots of laughs together. And we areboth on the same page. That makes fora very fun time.”

What began with a flurry of fabric, color and wallpaper selections at thePacific Design Center in WestHollywood last July, continued withmonthly meetings and shopping tripsin California and finally wound downwhen Crespo spent all of Decembergetting everything placed, paintedand papered.

“I absolutely want to entertainhere,” said DeBartolo. “My friends andI just love chilling and talking. Thisspace is a place to accomplish that andhave fun.”

The open floor plan creates a lightand airy environment on the mainliving level that flows to an outdoorarea, accessed by floor-to-ceiling glasssliding doors. Furniture is free of theconfines and constrictions of walls.Vivid colors and various prints co-existin harmony.

“This is how I dress. I never dresssafe,” said DeBartolo about her non-tra-ditional tastes. “I don’t follow all therules. I have short platinum hair andlove beautiful clothes. I don’t likelooking like everyone else.”

A woven silk floor rug boastingwhimsical swirls, colors similar to paintsplatters, creates a welcome focal pointon the wooden floor. A bright pinkportrait of Marilyn Monroe coated indiamond dust sparkles and shimmers. The long, narrow upstairs hallway isbuffered by a runner made from anIndian sari. Handblown mercury glassplates wall-mounted at the top of thestairs add depth, dimension and drama.

“I love wallpaper and try to alwaysuse it in my designs,” said Crespo.“People still think of wallpaper as thedated floral you might find at yourgrandmother’s house. Wall coveringshave come a long way. I feel they addanother layer of texture to the spaceyou can not achieve with painting. Thepaper in the guest room is silk, thepaper in Candy’s office (aqua coloredroom) is murano glass beads and thepaper in her master bath portraysfalling flowers (peonies).”

A mother of three and wife ofcommercial real estate developer, andformer owner of the San Francisco49ers NFL team, Edward DeBartoloJr., Candy admits to an affinity forcosmopolitan destinations.

“My husband loves Montana andhe’ll spend months there,” saidDeBartolo. “It’s not enough for me. Iam not very outdoorsy. I spend maybe amonth per year in Montana. I needmore stimulation!” M

Large-scale paintings are popping up in

unexpected places throughout Tampa Bay,

creating brilliant backdrops on exterior walls,

adding drama to drab parking garages and

bringing original, dynamic artworks to the

forefront by bringing them to street fronts.

The SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival

launched in 2015 and added 17 new murals

to the downtown district, that continues to

attract steady streams of admirers. To build on

that success, organizers are busy lining up

new locations and a new line-up of artists,

who will add another wave of murals — not just

to walls — when the event returns Sept. 1 - 10.

A public parking facility, a shopping center

stairwell and a white wall adjacent to a

landmark restaurant, are among the new

heavily-trafficked sites boasting murals in

Tampa. Helping to pair accomplished artists

with ready-made canvases in downtown,

Hyde Park and SoHo, are Jake and Cassie

Greatens, co-owners of CASS Contemporary

Gallery in South Tampa. A movement that

began with murals cropping up in major

metropolitan areas is now spreading to smaller

markets, according to the Greatens.

“Jake and I are working withartists to infuse the Tampa scenewith muralists from around the world. This movement takes buildings andmakes them prettier,” said CassieGreatens. “The process involvesmore than finding an ideal siteand surface. The accomplishedartist selected to paint that spacehas to have a suitable vision andvoice to ensure their work is timelessand everlasting,” she explained.

Tristan Eaton was commissionedto create a mural commemoratingthe 60-year anniversary of Bern’sSteak House. Among Eaton’sachievements are a permanentcollection at the New York

Museum of Modern Art and agrowing list of global destinationshosting his murals.

“Tristan takes street murals toanother level,” said Cassie.“Bern’s wall is a prime wall. Themural tells a story about an iconicfamily in Tampa who has helpedto put Tampa on the map. It wasthe best wall for Tristan.”

Murals, not to be confused withgraffiti, are becoming a popularplatform for renowned, professionalartists whose works are covetedby private collectors and featuredat world class museums.

John Collins, executive directorof the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance,

has an increase in businesses interestedin partnering with artists for this year’sSHINE event, as well as inquiriesabout muralists. The arts allianceweb site now includes a dedicateddirectory of muralists. The listingincludes local artists instrumental inorganizing SHINE, Tes One, Bask andPale Horse, among others.

“We now have 50 murals in St.Petersburg and that number isgrowing,” Collins said. “What we hopehappens with the mural movement isthat we find ways for local and interna-tional artists to collaborate. What wesee happening is that neighborhoodswhere there are murals, take morepride in their communities.”

Hurst won’t be in attendance at Tales of the Cocktail or Hukilau this year, as he is about to embark on anew adventure, fatherhood, in May. To keep the spirit and fun of the Tiki culture, Hurst designed and built hisown Tiki Bar last summer at his home. Using mainly re-purposed wood and materials, Hurst has created hisown tropical paradise to relax and escape.

In true cocktail fashion,Hurst created a signature

cocktail, “Stolen Idol.”

1½ oz Appleton’s Extra 12yr¼ oz Smith & Cross½ oz Pineapple Juice, unsweetened¼ oz Fresh Lime Juice¾ oz Coconut Milk¾ oz Strong Coffee Syrup (1:1)8 drops Bittermens ‘elemakule Tiki Bitters

1. Combine Ingredients and shake with ice2. Strain into a Hurricane style glass andtop with crushed ice (used shaker icewill do)3. Garnish with an orange slice dustedwith fresh grated nutmeg (cocoa nibswere nice, too)

Notes:It was a cool, rainy night at a retro spot on thebeach. I was making drinks for a small group ofTiki fans with the ‘Bum.’ A mutual friend challengesme to create a drink named after his band,Stolen Idols. I said, “only if you write a songcalled Jet Pilots in the rain.” I’m still waiting.

Coffee Syrup:At home, strong brewed coffee works great andis easy to make. The pour over method gives youthe most control with extraction, yielding the bestresults. Cold brew coffee has a cleaner profilewith less bitter notes than hot brewed coffee. Itis also much more stable and can last for weekswhen properly stored.

Everything elseenhances the dish.” The menu offersabout five broths on the lunch and dinnermenus. he dining scene in downtown St.Petersburg is exploding and the timingis right for the culinary movement.

“With the addition of great new restaurants,we are starting to see the revolution takeplace,” said Managing Partner, TedDorsey of The Mill. “It’s partially due tothe unique arts movement that is takingplace. People are beginning to seek outrestaurants that push the boundaries.”

Chef Dorsey says the menu at TheMill has a well-balanced “RusticAmericana” feel. “It’s a combination of mysouthern roots, as well as, my classicFrench training,” said Dorsey. “We try toallow the food to be the star by not overmanipulating the product. Cooking for mecomes from the heart, with love.”

Cheese and charcuterie can be a mealin itself and the options at The Mill arequite unique. “We wanted to do cheeseand charcuterie a little bit different,” saidDorsey. “We wanted to incorporate

T seafood, as well as, proteins. What sets usapart, from others, is we make all of ourcharcuterie in-house from our lamb bacon, duck bacon, octopus bacon, smokedsalmon, pickled shrimp, lengua rillettesand foie gras torchon. Then, we pair thosewith amazing cheeses and our signaturemarmalade, mustardo and rye whiskeymustard.”

Open for lunch and dinner, The Millhas a few menu items that are diners’favorites. “Our watermelon bruschetta, sweet pea hummus, lamb shank pot pieand wild boar ribs, are a few of the mostpopular,” said Dorsey. The menu rotatesseasonally, with the best sourced local andregional products, and May 1 will see anew menu change.

Chef Ted Dorsey has a stellar culinarybackground having graduated from LeCordon Blue and worked with award win-ning chefs such as Marty Blitz and BryceWittlesy. Dorsey also worked on Tampa

concepts Ciro’s Speakeasy & Supper Club, and Boca Kitchen Bar and Market. Hewas also responsible for opening and cre-ating the menus and supervising all diningand bar operations, at The CastileRestaurant inside Hotel Zamora.

The drink and bar menu offers twistson classic style cocktails. Dorsey says thatGin will be a hot spirit for summer, alongwith a resurgence of Rum and sippingrums. “For spring and summer we will befeaturing more tiki like cocktails like theclassic Zombie, with more than one styleof Rum in one cocktail,” said Dorsey.“We will also see an increase in lighterwines such as Rosé, and crisper whitesthat pair well with the sweet summer heatof Tampa Bay.” M
