P & C Stage 4 Scholarships -2013
The selection panel was overwhelmed with the quality and quantity of outstanding
applicants and found it exceedingly difficult to only award ten scholarships so we have
decided to award twelve for students entering Year 7 at Tamworth High in 2013.
The twelve scholarships worth $500 each over the two years are awarded in the categories
of Academic, Sport, Music, Dance and All rounder .
It is hoped to present the inaugural winners at their primary school presentation days.
Healthy Schools Healthy Futures Tamworth High School NEWSLETTER ARTICLE
The Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures program is directed towards students in Years
7 to 10 and aims to decrease the prevalence of health risk behaviours (such as
alcohol consumption, smoking, other drug use, physical inactivity and inadequate
nutritional intake) by enhancing the resilience of students through resilience
interventions.
These resilience interventions aim to increase the internal and external resilience of
students. Internal resilience factors refer to the personal skills and traits of young
people. Internal resilience factors include empathy, self-esteem, self-awareness,
effective help seeking, communication and cooperation, and goals and aspirations.
External resilience factors refer to positive influences within the young person’s
environment and surroundings that protect them from engaging in health risk
behaviours. External resilience factors include school connection, community
connection, family connection, and pro-social peers.
As part of the Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures program, School Project Officers
and Principals are pressing ahead with the Curriculum and Community workshops,
both essential elements in planning resilience interventions for students. Most of the
schools have now completed these workshops, and the remaining schools are
expected to have completed their workshops in the next few weeks.
The next step is for Tamworth High School to create an Action Plan. This plan will
list selected resilience interventions for each school to implement over the next
couple of years. Strategies in this plan may include activities from MindMatters and
SenseAbility, rewards and recognition programs, student empowerment programs,
and plans to increase links between the school and the community. The Action Plan
will be produced by the School Project Officer and the Core Team.
School workshops and Action Plans are two important milestones of the Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures program and we encourage all teachers, parents and students to contribute to the planning of Tamworth High School’s resilience interventions.
Tamworth High School is a caring community that promotes safe respectful learners

The 2012 White Ribbon Day match will be held on 23 November at Scully Park. Our Open
boys' Rugby League team will play an out of season game against Oxley High School. The
boys are working very hard to arrange a great afternoon of entertainment. A barbecue will
be available on the day for students to buy their lunch. We will be asking for gold coin
donations from the crowd to support the White Ribbon Foundation and the local support
agencies here in Tamworth. Students from Oxley High and Tamworth High got together to
jointly organise the event on Tuesday 30th October.
National Oral Health Survey Tamworth High students were lucky enough to be involved with the recent National Health
Survey conducted by NSW Health in conjunction with the University of Adelaide.
The lucky candidates had a free check and recommendations for future oral health care.
Keeping your kids safe online is easy with a few simple precautions.
1. Nothing replaces parental supervision and education for kids about
cybersafety.
2. Set a technology curfew.
3. Remind your child to never give out identifying information such as your
home address, school name or telephone number in a public message such
as chat or newsgroups.
4. If your child posts photos online, use privacy settings to limit access to
people they know well.
5. Remind your child that people don't always tell the truth online, and they
can't take anything at face value.
6. Reassure your child that they can tell you anything, without fear of losing
the laptop or internet access.
7. If they get a message or email that's threatening or rude, they should
'STOP, BLOCK, TELL'. First step is to tell your child to stop
responding to the abuse and then block those people sending threatening
or rude messages if they continue. Let your child know that if they are
being bullied, or know someone else who is, they should tell a trusted
adult.
8. Never click on any links that are contained in emails from people they
don't know. As well as sexual content, they could contain a computer
virus.
9. If you suspect your child has been contacted by a predator, try to save a
copy of the chat log (or whatever form the contact takes) for evidence. Call
Crime Stoppers 24-hour line 1800 333 000 to make a formal complaint.
10. Your child will be using computers and the technology for the rest of their
lives – you're in the great position of being able to get them off to a safe,
positive start.

Year 6 students and their parents
are always interested in knowing
which Year 7 class they have been
placed in, who their teachers will
be and which rooms they will
have. Our annual Orientation Day
may not give all these answers but
it does aim to make transition to
high school a little more
comfortable.
This years Orientation Day has
again been held over two separate
days due to commitments from a
number of primary schools
including Year 6 Canberra
Excursions.
On the first day, Wednesday,
October 24, students from
Tamworth South Public School
met at the Tamworth High School
library where Mr Bradshaw, Head
Teacher Welfare introduced
Principal, Mr Chaffey, The Year
Advisor, Mr Vereyken and Stage 4
Deputy, Mr Woods. School
Prefects took students to a number
of ‘taster’ classes including Food
Technology with Mrs Barnett,
Geography with Mr Galvin,
Mathematics with Mr Smith and
Physical Education with Ms Ernst.
Parents had the opportunity to hear
from various Tamworth High
School staff including Ms Georgie
Gough, Student Support Officer,
School Administration Manager,
M s R a e l e n e P a f f , a n d
representatives of the school
Parents and Citizens Association.
This was followed by a tour of the
school.
Rewards Day for Support Students and Work Place Mentors Mrs Sue Warden organised a special morning tea at the Powerhouse’s Workshop Cafe for
Support students to celebrate their work place endeavours.
Representatives from a number of local business houses and council were also part of the
celebration.
The Successful Tamworth High School Mindzone project was further promoted on the
afternoon of Friday 26th October when the Mindzone student group and Mr Guy Porter
launched the Mindzone Fair. About 12 community groups including Centacare and the
Salvation Army joined together to promote an active and healthy lifestyle as a means to
prevent poor mental health and to publicise various positive interventions for young people
with developing poor mental wellbeing.
The afternoon was an outstanding success with Year’s 9-11 students attending during early
Period 4 and Stage 4 students attending in the latter part of Period 4.
The Mindzone Fair was held at Tamworth High School last Friday afternoon in Period 4. It
provided all students in the school with the opportunity to meet local youth service
providers in a fun environment. The Fair was driven by Year 10 students Dulkara Pearce,
Brittany Ryan, Lauren Ryan, Karla Jeffrey and Ryan Higgins. They also organised the
Amazing Race that had over 60 team entries from students. A list of organisations that
attended included Joblinkplus, Centacare, Youthies, Smith Family, Family Referrral
Centre, Commonweath Respite and Carelink Centre, Youth Refuge, Tamworth Family
Support Service, Benevolent Society-Saverplus, Youth Mental Health Project Hunter New
England Health and Peel Community Mental Health Service.
