QUESTION FOUR: WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?

Before looking at specific ages for our target audience, we firstly came up with a ‘genre’ of gender who would necessarily watch science fiction films, the gender we had researched was the male gender from statistics and diagrams of well known different films. To fully understand the target audience for these films I have looked at three components: statistics from men and women on IMBD, poster and small quotes from well known sci-fi films.

INCEPTION(2010)

The target audience of ‘Inception’ is predominately aimed at young males between the age of 16-37 as its an action packed sci-fi. However the plot and storyline appeals to both genders.The statistics on the left

represent the numbers of the most popular genres of films such as Science Fiction,Comedy,Romance etc. As I have produced an opening sequence for a science fiction film these are the statistics that I'm most interested in to see the percentages of audiences that would watch a sci-fi.The science fiction genre has been ranked very

low as with a disappointing 7.5% percentage of an audience that paid to watch a science fiction, this effects greatly on the target audience for my own opening sequence as the Drama genre have smashed that target with a percentage of 30.7%.

IMDb review of ‘Inception’

Looking at two of the posters used for advertising for the film ‘Inception’.

In this poster we see a more male dominated audience as the male figure seen is holding a gun.

However in this poster you have the ‘best of both worlds’ as although there are predominately males there is a female character on the cover as well which appeals to both genders female and male.

The red coloured font has connotations linked to blood, which gives off the impression that killing will take place in the film or a mass takeover. The simplicity of the font also creates a neutral identification of gender.

The colour scheme of dark colours with flooding water beneath the character creates the effect of a juxtaposing world which gives the impression that it has been over-ruled by a superior power. The dark blues, blacks and greys is more aimed at the male gender of audiences.

‘’Insanely Brilliant ! Nolan has outdone himself !!’’

This is definitely a male influenced review of the film as men tend to do research on the film and reviews to see if it’s worth spending money on to go and watch.

‘’Too much....WAY too much’’

Stereotypically the female gender are usually distinguished as more emotional than men, this review has been written by a female as they were shocked at what ‘Inception’ had to offer as they are used to chick flicks.

‘’Inception: A Fail’’

This review has been written by a young male who could be a teenager as the term ‘fail’ is usually linked into their terminology.
