An artist often wants to use a color and make it darker or lighter How can he do this It all comes down to knowing how to make shades and tints Your troop leader will explain the difference between these two color techniques Use a paint set and use the black and white to create different shades and tints of a color Then use those colors to create a monochromatic (one color) artwork

TINT mdash This is a color created by adding white to a color The more white you add the _____________________ the color becomes

SHADE mdash When you add black to a color a shade is created The more black you add to a color the _______________________ it becomes

Task 2 tintsshades

Task 1 color wheel

Art can be an entertaining experience Remember to encourage your boys to just enjoy the process Art is not about perfection but about learning and allowing oneself to create Planning ahead and having the materials ready and available may be time-consuming so be prepared to spend time preparing and purchase materials if need be

To earn The Artist emblem Explorers must complete FOUR tasks

Explorers will need materials that can mix in order to discover the differences of primary and secondary colors This can be achieved with colored dough or clay as well as paints and pastels You want a medium that will mix easily Crayons and colored pencils do not always get the desired effect

Primary Colors mdash These are the colors that cannot be created by mixing any other colors together All other colors come from mixing these three colors They are RED YELLOW and BLUE

Secondary Colors mdash These colors are made when two primary colors are mixed They are ORANGE GREEN and VIOLET

If you want to take this lesson a step farther you can teach the boys that if you mix colors across from each other on the color wheel (complementary colors) you can make the color brown each time You have to start with the lighter color and add the darker color in a little at a time Red + Green = Brown Orange + Purple = Brown Yellow + Violet = Brown

Allow the boys to discover how adding white and black to the other colors change their appearance Once they have had the opportunity to investigate what happens give them supplies to create a picture They will need to use one base color and then add white andor black to make different shades and tints to create their picture It can be an abstract picture or one with a modern feel Allow them to discover what they can do using only one color

httpwwwvisual-arts-corkcomrepresentational-arthtm httparthistoryaboutcomcsreferencefrepresentationhtm httpsenwikipediaorgwikiRepresentation_28arts29 httpthevirtualinstructorcomtypes-of-arthtml

Abstract art uses shapes colors lines textures and materials in the creation It does not represent reality but will sometimes convey emotion in the colors and order of shapes

NOTE When encouraging your boys to create an artwork of each style it may be a good option to give them an item to use to make a still life representational picture Sometimes choosing the item to draw or paint is one of the hardest parts

Task 4 representational abstract art

If your troop chooses this task to complete give your group plenty of time and resources for research Below are basic definitions for each time period

Stone Age mdash This art may be called prehistoric Examples would be cave drawings stone statues and pottery

Egyptian mdash Most artwork of this period was created to be included in a tomb for a divine purpose not for human enjoyment This art time period includes many pictures of people and animals Items we see will include tombs jewelry rugs vases and wall carvings

Byzantine mdash This period included artwork that was more symbolic in the pieces It often portrayed people and religious figures

Task 5 art history

the artist - 12EXPLORERS

Renaissance mdash The reawakening period of art history This time produced large art pieces that showed representational works The artists were often paid by families with money to create beautiful works

Baroque mdash This art became popular in Italy in the 1600s Much of the art showed religious scenes including emotions and drama One of the key elements is that you can usually see a kind of movement in this artwork

Romanticism mdash This art centered on emotions and feelings The subjects depicted varied greatly across the board It started in Europe but spread throughout the world

Realism mdash Artwork from this period was very representational It worked to show exactly what was seen in the real world

Impressionism mdash France was the birthplace of the Impressionist movement These French artists often painted outside and utilized many varieties of lighting to influence their work

Surrealism mdash This time in art history showed images from random thoughts andor dreams Many might say that paintings from this time make little sense to the beginner viewer

Pop Art mdash The art during this time used icons that arewere popular in the modern world A viewer may see popular celebrities products or logos included in the art of this period

Art History Investigation Questionsbull When was this movement

bull List the characteristics from the art during this time

bull Tell about the famous art and artists of this period

bull What are some things you find interesting about art during this time

bull Who is your favorite artist or artwork Why

the artist - 13EXPLORERS

Advice for taking a good photographbull Hold your camera still and give it time to focus In many shops today you can pick up

tripods to hold your camera still With your Explorers share with them that they often can stabilize their arms by resting them on a table or counter near by so that the camera is held still during the photograph

bull Keep the photo simple allowing one or two things to be the center of interest It is easy to take mass pictures but a true photographer will take the time to pick out the parts that are of greatest interest and zoom in with the camera or walk closer and capture that part of the scene limiting the items photographed

bull Donrsquot be afraid to zoom in or move closer to bring in more detail

bull Experiment with several angles (down low up high from above) Sometimes it is enjoyable to stand on a chair or lie on the ground to see a photo opportunity from a different view Encourage the Explorers to think outside of the box when it comes to angles

bull Pay attention to the lighting

mdash Front lighting light comes from behind you If this photo has people in it this kind of lighting can cause them to squint so the photographer may need to adjust their stance to avoid this

mdash Side lighting light comes from side of item photographed

mdash Back lighting light shines on back of object Occasionally this lighting may create a glow around the object being photographed and shadow the front surface

Representational art shows items that are easily recognized This can be shown in paintings drawings sculptures and more

httpwwwvisual-arts-corkcomrepresentational-arthtm httparthistoryaboutcomcsreferencefrepresentationhtm httpsenwikipediaorgwikiRepresentation_28arts29 httpthevirtualinstructorcomtypes-of-arthtml

Abstract art uses shapes colors lines textures and materials in the creation It does not represent reality but will sometimes convey emotion in the colors and order of shapes

httpsenwikipediaorgwikiAbstract_art httpwwwvisual-arts-corkcomabstract-arthtm httpwwwteachkidsartnettagabstract-art

TINT mdash This is a color created by adding white to a color The more white you add the lighter the color becomes

SHADE mdash When you add black to a color a shade is created The more black you add to a color the darker it becomes

Advice for taking a good photographbull Hold your camera still and give it time to focus In many shops today you can pick up

tripods to hold your camera still With your Explorers share with them that they often can stabilize their arms by resting them on a table or counter near by so that the camera is held still during the photograph

bull Keep the photo simple allowing one or two things to be the center of interest It is easy to take mass pictures but a true photographer will take the time to pick out the parts that are of greatest interest and zoom in with the camera or walk closer and capture that part of the scene limiting the items photographed

bull Donrsquot be afraid to zoom in or move closer to bring in more detail

bull Experiment with several angles (down low up high from above) Sometimes it is enjoyable to stand on a chair or lie on the ground to see a photo opportunity from a different view Encourage the Explorers to think outside of the box when it comes to angles

bull Pay attention to the lighting

mdash Front lighting light comes from behind you If this photo has people in it this kind of lighting can cause them to squint so the photographer may need to adjust their stance to avoid this

mdash Side lighting light comes from side of item photographed

mdash Back lighting light shines on back of object Occasionally this lighting may create a glow around the object being photographed and shadow the front surface

bull Keep the photo simple allowing one or two things to be the center of interest It is easy to take mass pictures but a true photographer will take the time to pick out the parts that are of greatest interest and zoom in with the camera or walk closer and capture that part of the scene limiting the items photographed

bull Donrsquot be afraid to zoom in or move closer to bring in more detail

bull Experiment with several angles (down low up high from above) Sometimes it is enjoyable to stand on a chair or lie on the ground to see a photo opportunity from a different view Encourage the Explorers to think outside of the box when it comes to angles

bull Pay attention to the lighting

mdash Front lighting light comes from behind you If this photo has people in it this kind of lighting can cause them to squint so the photographer may need to adjust their stance to avoid this

mdash Side lighting light comes from side of item photographed

mdash Back lighting light shines on back of object Occasionally this lighting may create a glow around the object being photographed and shadow the front surface

Scripture Letrsquos read 2 Corinthians 517 In this Scripture we find out that when we give our lives to Jesus our past is erased So if our past is filled with sin and things that arenrsquot that great we can rest in the fact that God has made us a new creation That old life is behind us and He wipes it away just like we wiped away that crazy picture on the dry erase board God forgives our sins He wipes them away so that we can have a fresh start Now isnrsquot that good news

ON TARGET

Take time this week and write a short note to God Thank Him for erasing a specific sin for which you are sorry from your life

PRAYER

Dear Jesus Thank you for making us a new creation when we believe in You We all do things that we are not proud of We are happy that You can wipe it away Help us not to do those things again It feels good to be new and fresh and ready to start and let the world see You shine through us In Your name amen

TINT mdash This is a color created by adding white to a color The more white you add the lighter the color becomes

SHADE mdash When you add black to a color a shade is created The more black you add to a color the darker it becomes
