Year 3: Spellings
This week’s focus: Suffix –ly
Recap the rules:
The –ly suffix may be added to an adjective to make it an adverb (such as sadly). This
week all spelling rules for the –ly suffix are covered, including a review of those taught
in the last half term.
1. If the root word ends in a ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and then add ‘ly’ (angrily,
cheekily)
2. If the root word ends in ‘-le’, the ‘-le’ is changed to ‘-ly’ (cuddly, gently)
3. If the root word ends in ‘-ic’, add ‘-ally’ [comically, magically].

Year 3: Literacy
Can I write a letter?
Features of a formal letter
Address of the sender (on the right) and the recipient (on the left)
Long Date
Formal greeting e.g Dear Sir/Madam if you don’t know them, Dear
Mr/Mrs/Miss Surname if you do.
Introduction – explain why you are writing your letter
Paragraphs
Conclusion saying what you want to happen next.
Formal ending e.g. Yours faithfully (if you don’t know them) or Yours
Sincerely (if you know them)
Your name at the end.
Below is an example of the main contents of an apology letter:

Task: Read through the information about Roy Lichtenstein and the Pop Art movement. Notice
the techniques he uses and then create your own piece of onomatopoeia pop art e.g. pop.
