2. Why SBL?
Too much instructional delivery still focuses on the most elementary level of learning. in Blooms terms: Knowledge and Comprehension
This often places the learner in a passive role sponge!
In the classroom this looks like traditional lecture: I tell, I ask, then you answer until it is hammered in!
3. Why SLB
Effective learning environments should
Be problem-based (scenarios)
Actively engage students in learning
Collaborative mirroring work environments
Make knowledge applicable to real world
Demonstrating knowledge - TELL and SHOW
Applying skills ASK andDO
Transferring skills USE and MODIFY
4. SBL in Tech Writing 107
Course is equivalent to English 101
Writing assignments business oriented: letters, overviews, reports, analysis
Course seems a natural for SBL as it has a very real world take on the purpose and necessity of writing.
Course challenging as it is online, making collaboration at times problematic.
5. SBL in Tech Writing 107
Implementation: The Scenario
Established that students were working for a business that produces a product. In effect, they were employees.
Students got to select the product they would be producing and selling during the semester.

  • Students allowed to select an area of interest (department) to work in the for the semester: marketing, research, or engineering

6. Tasks presented came in forms of individual assignments and group assignments.
