Message from the editor
Hello Everyone!!
I was only recently wondering when I needed to
produce your next newsletter. In a senior mo-
ment I believed that we had already published
this issue until my alter ego (namely Avril) in-
formed me that I must have been dreaming. So
apologies to all and here we go.
Now that was 2 months ago and I have been
patiently waiting for our illustrious President to
provide me with his input before publication.
I plan to try some new little items in the next
issue and of course all constructive feedback
will be appreciated.
I will say that I thought that this issue may well
have been a Rob Brasington exclusive until
Dave came to the rescue. No offense meant to
Rob, but is there anyone out there?
I hope that all is well with you and let us know
just what you have been up to. Articles, photos,
ANYTHING please.
Up, up
and away

Hi all
Welcome to my Presidents Report for 2013|14.
As I sit to put words to print I look back at the year that we have experienced and the wonderful time that we all as club members have had flying and socialising together.
We have had some excellent fly‟s on the East Coast, at Devonport and in Hobart combined with a superb social time attached to each.
But when I say year I should probably say month as it has been a whole years worth in one month and that month by co-incidence is the shortest of the year, so it has been a short compact flying season.
Much planning and organisation has gone into these events for which I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for playing your part. A special thanks goes to Andrew, Robert & Tracey and Ian & Avril for opening up their homes to what is definitely a mixed bag of kiters!
Andrew in particular has been a great help and exemplary in his role Vice-President.
To my fellow office bearers and committee members in the words of old Mr Grace “You‟ve all done very well!” and I sincerely appreciate your devotion, talents and friendships, together you make our Club a great little group to be part of.
The future
At this juncture I need to implore all members to get involved in the Clubs activities especially the Club Fly Days; Social BBQ‟s; Festivals and the Workshop including the Annual General Meeting.
Please think about how you might get involved with the running of the Club as they say many hands make light work and the burden thereby not too onerous.
KFT online
Our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/9475605766/) is a curious beastie with 64 members listed and growing. Members are accepted into the group if they are KFT members, local to Tassie and interested in kiting or if they have an affiliation with a current online member.
There are lots of articles, photos and news from around the globe being shared on the page which is fantastic to see.
2014 & 2015 Workshops
This year we are having an open project workshop which means lots of socialisation, kite building and repairing. A key task of the weekend will be to start planning for our Workshop in 2015 where we propose to bring in a prominent International Kite Flyer/Builder to run a workshop for KFT Members and interested others. The possibility of promoting this as a large, exciting and educational event is a wonderful opportunity to do something really special. Just look at the Workshops in places like Fort Worden etc that attract participants from across the globe as inspiration.
The Wrap
Well that‟s my tuppence worth for now. Thanks to all who have put up with my „vagueness‟ over the last couple of years as President and for stepping up when I‟ve been going through difficult moments. And while it sounds like a new year‟s resolution I‟m personally trying to re-invigorate my interest in kite building this year so have started planning my workshop project shhh! Dont tell anyone http://kitelife.com/tutorials/issue-70-kite-plan-ohashis-no-bridle-kites/
Cheers
Dave

‘Tasmanian Kite Month’ & Workshop Planning
The idea
Develop a Promotional Plan designating February 2015 as ‘Tasmanian Kite Month’
Put together a promotional package for our festivals etc comprising:
text;
photos; and video/s.
The visual component incorporating kiting, scenic flyovers and iconic Tasmanian imagery.
There is a bunch of free stuff available via Tourism Tasmania (see Resources Section below).
Overriding principal of this whole idea is to get maximum effect for little input and if it looks
too hard a path to take, step back and look for an easier pathway.
Even my planned workshop ideas could feed into this.
Web Presence
Revamp the front web page and incorporate our promotional material as well as putting it out
there via Facebook and emails to any international contacts.
Create ‘Tasmanian Kite Month’ facebook page for the release of information create Link at

Partnerships and contacts
RACT Travel could be contacted to discuss the possibility of bringing them on board as a
Travel Partner/Contact for any visitors looking to organise extended stays and touring between
the event schedule.
Discussion held with Phil Higgins of RACT Travelworld, Rosny Park.
Phil advised they could assist visitors find accommodation etc.
P. +61 3 6212 6777 | E.
Also suggested that KFT may be able to get a grant from Tourism if bringing in visitors
to the State. My thoughts on this are that as with most grants we’d have to sell our soul
for a small gain and is probably not worth it but I could be wrong.
MONA could be contacted to discuss involvement with the Hobart end of the event schedule.
Perhaps an art kite installation or a fly from the roof of MONA. [email protected]
Rotary involvement with combined/pooled promotion of the two festivals seems an idea
worth pursuing.
Workshop
The club wants to bring in a well know kite maker to conduct a workshop for the 2015 KFT
Workshop Weekend
Robert Brasington is working his way through a short list of kite makers.
Robert & I have decided to pursue Istvan Bodoczky from Hungary.
INFO: http://www.drachen.org/bio/istvan-bodoczky
Emails (to Istvan & Scott Skinner) & FB message (to Istvan) sent to seek interest.

The "Edo Group Project" Brief is: The intention of the group is to share building and construction techniques of a 'Modern Edo' kite.
Rather than making one kite, each member will end up with their own kite from the panels provided
from all other participants.
Ripstop 0.75oz. material is to be used
Panel size:
Landscape 620mm x 420mm this includes an extra 10mm on all sides for trimming this is approx. 16" x 24"
for the metric challenged.
Final panels should be numbered 1/10, 2/10 etc. and signed and dated by the maker.
The 12 Participants are:
Trevor Reeves; Kevin Bayless; Ron Bohart; Ron Ortega;
William G. Lamm; Ronda Brewer; Ben Huggett; Brianne Howard;
David Geer; Alden Miller; Bob Kelly Kip Clement
Panels should be completed by the end of July to early August to
facilitate distribution in September. (hahahahahahahahaaha yeah
right!)
At the time of writing this I do wonder if I have bitten off more than I can chew as
this „bit of cake‟, to use a language that Pam is familiar with (insert cheeky grin here), is a monstrous task that
has taken many months and still it is not finished on my part.
The finished kite is to be 2 panels wide by 6 panels high, carbon framing is being sourced and bridling materi-
al is at the ready.
I have received 8 panels and they are fantastic and inspire me to push on and get my panels done and shipped
off. That is once I have finished writing articles for the newsletter.
The following pics will give you an idea of the work that is involved in this awesome project.
Cheers Dave

A visit to the Tappendens
Ian and I had the wonderful opportunity to call in and see Graham and Lorraine Tappenden on
our recent journey to Bundaberg, Queensland. It is about 8 years since Graham and Lorraine
joined us in Tasmania for our February Festivals (only two of them in those days!). Graham and
Lorraine though not doing much flying these days are still members of KFT, and look forward
to our newsletters—keep up the good work Pam! We were their first kiting friends to visit from
Tasmania, but they have been assured that Rodger will be cycling past one day and the kettle is
always on.
