The University of Newcastle Language Centre offers a wide range of programs for institutions wishing to create partnerships with Australian institutions.
Our programs incorporate intensive English training, with the opportunity to engage with Australian and other international students, excursions to experience Australian culture, volunteering programs, a highly regarded homestay program
and much more.
The University of Newcastle Language Centre has been offering English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) since 1989, and has established a reputation for excellence in English language education.

Our Language Centre on the University’s main campus in Newcastle is a modern building, conveniently located in the centre of the campus adjacent to the University’s library and the student services centre.
The beautiful city of Newcastle is known for its spectacular coastline, its contemporary culture and enviable lifestyle and was included among the top 10 cities in the annual publication of Lonely Planet Guide to the Best Places to Travel 2011 (“Best in Travel Guide for 2011”) .

The University of Newcastle’s Sydney-based Language Centre allows students to balance the benefits of studying English with a high-ranking, long-established institution with easy access to the conveniences of Sydney’s CBD and surrounding areas.

THE RIGHT LEVEL OF ENGLISH FOR YOU
UPPER INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH*
Builds language skills necessary for participation in a wide range of social and vocational activities. During this course some work on English for Academic Purposes is introduced.
ADVANCED ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)
Develops language skills with an emphasis on skills relevant to tertiary study. Essay and report writing, note-taking, preparation for tutorials, strategies for listening to and understanding lectures, undertaking research, discussion and oral presentations are included.
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE, WE HAVE CLASSES IN BOTH ACADEMIC AND GENERAL ENGLISH TO ENSURE THAT WE CAN CATER TO ANY LEVEL OF ENGLISH. EACH COURSE LASTS FOR TEN WEEKS AND STUDENTS CAN COMMENCE EVERY FIVE WEEKS.

SPEED CONVERSATIONS This twice-weekly activity engages ELICOS and University students in casual conversation to build friendships across different cultures, embrace another culture and educate others about your own.
AUSSIE MEET & GREET We understand it takes longer than one day to settle into a new country and learning environment. Our unique three-week rolling orientation program starts with a ‘Meet and Greet’ with University students on day one, followed by a range of activities over the following few weeks to help with students’ transition to Australian life.
SUPPORT DURING YOUR STAY As a student in the language centre your Student Experience will be arranged by our dedicated Student Experience Program Coordinator and Global Experience Coordinator.
VOLUNTEER AND BUILD YOUR SKILLS The volunteer activities are conducted through our various volunteer partners. There are also one-off opportunities to volunteer at events and festivals at the University.
FRIENDSHIP ACTIVITIES Students get to meet Australian students and build relationships through regular out-of-class activities at local tourist attractions such as a day out at Newcastle Museum, a picnic on the Foreshore, a visit to the Farmers Market and a tour of Nobby’s Lighthouse.

ACTIVITIES
There are plenty of activities to keep residents occupied around Newcastle. Climb Mount Tomaree, visit the movies, take a class or go whale and dolphin watching at Nelson Bay. Newcastle is only forty minutes from the Hunter Valley wineries by car, where you can taste local wines and enjoy the picturesque views.
ART, HISTORY & CULTURE
Newcastle is home to several independent galleries as well as the Newcastle Museum and Newcastle Art Gallery. The Newcastle Museum showcases the best of local history and an interactive Science Centre.
SHOPPING
The University of Newcastle is 20 minutes by car from major shopping centres and a free shuttle bus runs Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturdays to Stockland Jesmond for residents to pick up their groceries.
BEACHES
With more than eight beaches and three ocean baths just 20 minutes from the University of Newcastle by car, residents are spoilt for choice.
MARKETS
Newcastle is a collective for arts and culture, and artists showcase their wares at the local markets. The Markets are the perfect place to spend a sunny weekend.
WITH A POPULATION OF OVER 500,000 PEOPLE, NEWCASTLE IS SMALLER THAN SYDNEY AND A FAVOURITE FOR THOSE IN SEARCH OF A CITY VIBE THAT ISN’T OVERWHELMING.

OPTIONALEXTRASAIRPORT TRANSFERSNewcastle airport is 15km north of the city and is Australia’s 12th busiest airport. Transfers to and from the airport can be arranged via various operators.
WHALE WATCHING Between May and November, you can view whales migrating off Newcastle’s coastline at points such as Nobby’s Headland and Shepherd’s Hill Lookout.
SCUBA DIVINGNewcastle and nearby Port Stephens are home to the east coast’s top dive sites. There are many scuba diving courses on offer and clubs to join.
WALKING TOURSDiscover Newcastle on foot by joining one of many heritage walking tours, the Stockton shipwreck tour or the recently built, spectacular coastal Memorial Walk.

FOOTBALL GAMESWith two teams from different football codes, you’ll be able to support a local Newcastle sporting team to victory regardless of the season. We also recently played host to the Asian Cup.

ON-CAMPUS CONVENIENCESECURITY SHUTTLEA free shuttle bus operates during semester on both Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses. Use the ‘Double Map’ app to easily track the shuttle.
BARS AND CAFES Catch up and have a drink with friends, watch live music or grab a coffee and some lunch at one of the many lively bars and cafes on-campus.
BOOK SHOPS The Co-Op offers student textbooks, fiction and non-fiction books and is open to all residents at both Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses.
FITNESS FACILITIESThe Forum has an indoor pool, cardio and strength training zones, rock-climbing wall, cycle zone, group fitness classes and multi-purpose courts.
MEDICAL CENTREOur medical centres are located on-campus and are open to university staff and students.
NEW SPACE SHUTTLECatch the free NeW Space Shuttle bus to the city campus from six pick-up points in Callaghan campus. The bus is wheelchair accessible.

PHARMACY There is a pharmacy located on-campus that offers fast dispensing of PBS prescriptions. The pharmacy also offers free prescription delivery to residents.

OUR SHORT INTEGRATED PROGRAMS CATER FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS AND INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE LOOKING TO LEARN ENGLISH DURING THEIR UNIVERSITY SUMMER OR WINTER HOLIDAYS.
By joining our existing classes, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and mix with students from across the globe and participate at a level of English suited to your current level of proficiency. Classes commence every five weeks and start dates are flexible to suit your cohort.

ELIGIBILITY
STUDY ABROADOUR STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM ALLOWS STUDENTS ENROLLED IN OVERSEAS INSTITUTIONS TO STUDY ENGLISH AND UNIVERSITY SUBJECTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE AND RECEIVE CREDIT AT THEIR HOME INSTITUTIONS.
The Study Abroad Program consists of two stages:
1 YEAR DURATION
STAGE 1: INTEGRATED ELICOS STUDY
In this stage, students will integrate into our Upper Intermediate and English for Academic Purposes classes to complete the following:
STAGE 2: UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
In stage two, students will choose from four subjects of relevant undergraduate programs from the diverse offering available at the University of Newcastle.
If you fail to receive an Undergraduate Pass (EP) in Stage 1, you can still proceed with Stage 2. Instead of 4 subjects, you will study 3 subjects (30 units) and one of them must be ESLA1901 Academic Language Skills.

The University of Newcastle’s Homestay Program, established since 1998, offers a safe, affordable and family-oriented accommodation that enables you to live and interact with local families.
This program is operated by the University of Newcastle Language Centre, giving us a greater level of involvement in the placement of students and the ability to manage issues swiftly and effectively.

Fully Furnished Bedroom Standards and facilities may vary from household to household.

Packages are available to provide 2 or 3 meals a day.
Meals may be a self-served breakfast (cereal and toast), a packed lunch (a sandwich and fruit), and a cooked meal for dinner.

Opened in 2015, these four multi-story residential buildings offer student living in a variety of configurations. As our newest residents, the students in each tower have begun to form their own traditions and enjoy various social get-togethers with friends on their floor.
