    Tata Nagar, Govandi-west, Mumbai-43,

    Deonar-Govandi Road.

    Introduction:

The Tata Nagar is located between the Deonar-Govandi road and Harbor-line of Mumbai Suburban

Railways. The Basti is almost 1.5 km in length from east to west and less then 100 meter in width

from north to south. Tata Nagar has been divided in two parts, one is east to Tanaji Chowk and oneos west to the chowk.

    Water Supply:

There is no presence of public taps, provided by BMC, however there are 6 taps at one place, in the

west-extreme of the Basti, which draws water from a RCF water pipeline. According to residents,

the taps were established some 20-22 year back with effort of erstwhile residents and now it has

water for almost 20 hrs a day. More than half of Basti takes water from these taps.

Rest of the Bast which is faraway from these taps, gets municipal water and in time of scarcity

depends on Tankers, some times provided free of cost from MP/MLA/Corporator.

Public Toilet:On the road in Tata Nagar, there are too many public toilets, and half of them are non-functional.

Most of the toilets, that are non-functional are due to lack of water or maintenance. One can see

atleast 20-25 toilets on the northern edge of the road. One of them also by Sulabh International.

There is almost 1 pobluc toilet every 100 meters or even at lesser distance. There are few places

where 4-5 different structure of toilets are there together. All the toilets are pour toilets and they

dispose their waste directly into the nearby drain.

    Solid Waste Management:

From east to west of Deonar-Govandi roadi, there are dustbins (or Dump-bins) every 100/200 meter

on the road. Though many of them are in bad shape, but more or less, they are picked almost daily

and at the western-boundary, just along side with the drain, there is a open heap of garbage, which

    is also picked regularly.

    Flooding and Water Logging:

The drain that passes through and near by the Basti, is the major cause of nuisance caused by water

logging. The BMC, supposedly, cleans the drain, every year right before Monsoon, by digging the

drain, but it puts the debris removed from the drain, just alongside the drain itself, which again

flows back into the drain with rain water. Hence cleaning is there every year, but of no use. At times

of need Basti-residents them self get together do some cleaning to let water flow and to let monsoon

go easy without creating much trouble.

    Public Welfare Services:

According to a Ration-Shop operator there are at least 20 shops in the Basti. Though we could not

locate all the shops but as the other amenities available in the plenty, we agreed upon his point. The

residents complaints that the ration-shops are providing only kerosene. While we visited the shops,

Rice, Wheat and Kerosene was being distributed on one of the shop. Most residents possess Orange

    ration card here.

There is no Corporator's office in the Basti, but there is a Congress-committee office.

    Schooling and Education:

The largest school to be found in the area, that is Municipal School Groups, is in Tata Nagar, which

serves to Tata Nagar as well as the Government staff-quarters near by. It is run by the BMC and theschool structure houses 10 different schools of 7 different mediums.

Other than this, there are few Private English schools and Madarsa.

meter there is a private clinic or maternity home or medical shop or hospital.
