    Grandmas HouseAlice Melvin

An exquisitely detailed book to treasure and explore.

Often, after school, a little girl goes to her grandmothers house where everything is different, but always the same. She puts her coat on the hook in the hall, pours a glass of milk for herself in the kitchen and tries to reach the biscuit tin on the highest shelf in the pantry. But where is Grandma?

Children will love exploring the rooms in Grandmas house, peering through its cut-out pages from one room to the next and journeying high up into the fold-out attic in search of Grandma. Highly detailed and intricately illustrated in Alice Melvins trademark style, Grandmas House is evidence of one of Britains shining stars of illustration going from strength to strength.

Alice Melvin is a highly acclaimed artist and designer based in Edinburgh and the author and illustrator of An A to Z Treasure Hunt, Counting Birds and The High Street. She won the Booktrust Best New Illustrators Award in 2011.

This book has grown out of my memories of my own grandmas house. It was a 200 mile trip to reach her home, so for me visits were much-anticipated events. On arrival, once hugs had been exchanged, I would always set off on my own tour of the house, visiting all my favourite things.

Even now, over a decade since she died, I can close my eyes and retrace my steps with ease: moving with from room to room, knowing exactly what I will see as I do so: the cow milk jug with the tiny bell around his neck; the little porcelain wren that lifted up to reveal three small bead eggs; the wooden apple with the tiny wooden tea set hidden inside; the garden path winding past the pear tree

The house in this book contains many changes and additions to my grandmas actual house (alas she had neither a dog, nor a cat or a parrot!) Hopefully, however, it captures something of the pleasure that the memory of those visits still evokes.

My grandma had a wide range of creative talents: dressmaker, embroiderer, silversmith and wood-carver, to name just four. It is from her that I inherited my love of making things. To have had the opportunity to create this book feels like a very apt tribute.

and they all lived happily ever after

At least, thats what Jills story book tries telling her, but she cant help noticing that at the end of the story, one character looks far from happy. Dragon is despised by the King because all he can do is singe, burn and barbecue. So in an attempt to see her fairy tale ring true, Jill invites Dragon out of the book so she can teach him some alternative life skills.

Dragon throws himself into all of Jills favourite things: flower arranging, fashion styling, playing the trumpet, and hosting a tea party, with disappointing results. When it seems like all hope is lost, Jill discovers Dragon has one very unique, and palatable, hidden talent...

A stunning debut from an exciting illustrator, Jill & Dragon introduces a feisty, empathetic new character in Jill and reminds us that everyone has a talent, however well hidden.
