Potentate’s MessageDear Nobles:

This being my last message as Potentate of the great TripoliShrine, I have special thanks to those people that helped make 2012a success. I would like to personally thank my Chief Aide, LarryWegner and his wife, Sue, for their help and assistance in gettingmyself and my Lady to all the Shrine events throughout the fourcounty area. I’d like to thank Gigi and Becky for the professionaljob they have done in the front office helping plan the events andkeeping everything organized. Nobody could have done it better.I’d like to give a special thanks to Frank Foti for handling the bellringing one year of many. He does a great job and is very professional. In 2012 we raisedover $6,000 for the Salvation Army which is one of the better charities we have in theMilwaukee area.

Dale and I would also like to extend our appreciation and sincere thanks to Evonne and RonHurst for planning a wonderful potentate’s trip to Door County and the trips to Washington,DC. In regards to the Potentate’s trip, I would like to thank Neil and Shari Laack for makinga photo book for Dale and I. Looking at it was like being there. We also enjoyed the fudgethat Larry and Sue brought back for us to enjoy. Our appreciation goes out to Sherry Christiefor helping us with a successful fashion show and luncheon. Special thanks to Greg and DianeZarse for the support they continually give to Tripoli running the State Fair concessions andShrine booth.

Hats off to Red Fez for continually making the Children’s Christmas party a success. Everyyear it seems to get better and better.

Again, thanks to everyone that helped me out this year. There isn’t enough room in thispublication for the heartfelt feelings I have for each and every one of you. I will always appre-ciate everything you have done.

I would like for all of us to extend our support to the Divan and Bob Strader in 2013. Bobwas also very helpful and supportive in 2012 and will be a good leader in 2013.

JANUARY is named after the godJANUS, “the god of good beginnings,”which are sure to result in good endings! His chief temple in Rome ran east and

west, where the day begins and ends, and had two doors, between which stood his statue with two faces, oneyoung and one old. From this we learn to look backwardas well as forward as a new year begins, for we who areyoung will soon grow old. Be reminded we do this inour automobile as well with this difference: The rear-view mirror only allows a limited look backward; thewindshield permits a wide perspective on what is aheadof us. The future is more important than the past.Sometimes we need to shed the limitations of the pastand strive for those new beginnings in the future.Sometimes we get bogged down in our traditions anddon’t see the value of change. Change that couldimprove our conditions for success. “There is surely afuture hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.”Proverbs 23:18 “Even youths grow tired and weary, andyoung men stumble and fall; but those who HOPE inthe LORD will renew their strength. They will soar onwings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40: 30-31

“Be joyful in hope; patient in affliction, faithful inprayer. Share with God’s people who are in need.Practice hospitality.” Romans 12:12-13 “We have thisHOPE as an ANCHOR for the soul, firm and secure.”Hebrews 6: 19 As Shrine-Masons we are anchored inour Faith in the future. There is much to do and we areeager to get started. Rooted in our faithful past duringwhich much has been accomplished, let us forge aheadto new and better goals in 2013. Congratulations andBest Wishes to our new Potentate-Elect, Robert Strader, and his Divan as they assume their positions of leader-ship. “We’re looking forward to the future…”

Happy New Year to all the Nobles and their families.I know this story is late for Christmas, but it is one thatcan be told anytime. At the Red Fez Christmas party Iwas an elf helping Santa and his wife when a young ladybetween 8 and 10 years old sat next to Santa. Santaasked what she would like for Christmas and sheanswered a puppy. Santa was taken aback and said hewould have to ask her mother who was standing in frontof Santa. The mother said yes, she could have a smallpuppy for her dog had died a couple of weeks before.

Lake Shore Shrine ClubHappy New Year everyone, from the officers and mem-

bers of Lake Shore Shrine Club. With the New Year, we have a new slate of officers for

the ensuing year. They are Warren Kramer, President;Donald Hensiak, Vice President; Bert Sjostrom, Secretary;and Glen Gruenewald, Treasurer. Please give these newofficers your support during the coming year.

We plan on having speakers at all of our meetings thisyear to make the meetings more interesting for those inattendance, and our President is making plans on having asuitable one for our January meeting.

Reservations are always necessary, so please call Warrenwith yours at 414-762-8092 by January 19, for our January23 meeting.

-Bert T. Sjostrom, Secretary

Santa said he would check out the north pole to see if hecould find one for her but no promises. The young lady, the mother and Santa all had a tear in their eye. To me,that’s what Christmas was meant to be. Sometimes Ithink the spirit got lost.

Congratulations to all the new officers elected andappointed to the Divan and in their wisdom they remem-ber that they were a Mason first. The Provost Unit andWhitnall Park are combining their Installation togetherfor the first time. It will be held at Alioto’s Restaurant.Social hour is at 5:00 p.m. and dinner is at 6:00 p.m.The cost it $20.00 per person with a choice of threemeats: 6 oz. filet, sicilian steak or orange roughy.RSVP to Jerry Stein (262-642-2081) by Monday,January 14.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!Potentate’s Appointments Terminate

When Illustrious Sir’s Term Ends! When a Potentate’s term of office expires, all appointments made by him during his administration terminate.

Such appointments include Potentate’s Aides, Ambassadors, Unit Heads, Committee Chairmen and any otherappointed officers. No appointment is permanent.

Under Imperial Shrine law, each Potentate, when he is installed as chief executive of the Temple, must make hisown appointments, including six officers of the Divan – First and Second Ceremonial Masters, Ceremonial Director,Marshal, Captain of the Guard and Outer Guard.

The Potentate has the power and authority to replace every appointee – or he may, if he believes it to be in thebest interest of the Temple, retain all appointees. Traditionally, for the sake of efficiency, many Nobles of demon-strated ability are continued in office by re-appointment. But this is at the will and pleasure of the incomingPotentate.

Courtesy requires that a Noble holding an appointive office, position or assignment tender his resignationto the incoming Potentate. If the incoming Potentate desires a Noble to continue in his office by re-appoint-ment, he will be notified by the Potentate to that effect.

In addition to appointed Divan Officers, this applies to Ambassadors, Aides, Committee Chairmen and UnitHeads. It does not apply to Shrine Club officers. They are elected and installed by their membership before theincoming Potentate takes office.

If a Noble is not appointed for the ensuing year, he should deliver any insignia or emblem of office to theRecorder. Also, he should deliver the official Fez carrying any title, committee or staff designation to the Recorder, unless he is allowed by the incoming Potentate to keep the official Fez for sentimental reasons.

If the Fez is to be worn, however; all lettering except the name of the Temple should be removed. Any Noble notappointed to a position by the Potentate cannot wear a Fez carrying a title or other designation; to do so is in viola-tion of the Imperial Code.

PARK AT THE SHRINE CENTER

FOR THE CIRCUS!There are numerous parking facilities down-

town near the US Cellular Arena. However, as aservice to those attending the Circus, free park-ing is available at the Tripoli Shrine Centerlocated at 3000 W. Wisconsin Ave. (north sideof street).

After parking, you will board a school bus(free) that will take you and your guests to thefront door of the Arena. Following the show, these specially marked “Shrine Circus” busseswill pick you up at the same location and returnyou to the Shrine Center.

These busses go to & from the Shrine Centerto the Arena every 20 minutes or so; thus allow-ing you a more flexible schedule either before ofafter the Circus! HAVE FUN & ENJOY!

Nobles of Tripoli,

Thanks again for electing me Potentate of Tripolifor 2013. It is an honor that will be hard to surpassand I hope to live up to all your expectations. I’mreally blessed to have a strong corps of Divan officersfor 2013. With their help and help from all of you, wewill be assured of being successful.

I’ve been asked to provide a bio so I’ll try to keepit from being too boring. I was born a little over 57years ago on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio andwent to school in Oberlin. My parents are still livingin the home I grew up in. I have a younger sister whojust got married recently, and lost a younger brother inan auto accident in 1988. I met my lovely ladyBarbara, who grew up on the east side of Cleveland,on a blind date about 28 years ago and we’ve beenmarried now for over 27 years, have no children, buthave 2 cats that act like children.

This will upset a few of you, but I’m an alumni ofThe Ohio State University (it didn’t have “The” in thename when I went there), which was really fun whenwe lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan (our arch rivals) forabout 5 years in the late 80’s. Believe it or not, wehave a very active alumni club here in Milwaukee andmeet to watch football and basketball games together.

Until 2009, I had worked for 26 years at RockwellAutomation (Allen-Bradley) in Cleveland, Ann Arborand Milwaukee, in a variety of Engineering,Marketing, Strategic Planning and BusinessDevelopment Management roles. For the last 3 years,I’ve worked as a Project Manager at a web/internettechnology company in Bayside on the Northeast side.

Some Masonic background:• Raised a Master Mason in Freemasons Lodge

#363, here in Milwaukee, in 1997 and served as itsMaster in 2005.

• Joined the Scottish Rite Valley of Milwaukee in1997 and served as Thrice Potent Master of its Lodgeof Perfection in 2007.

• Became a Noble in Tripoli in 1997, served asSecretary in the Director’s Staff, am a member of theMotor Corps and the West Allis & Northwoods ShrineClubs and a member of Milwaukee Court 101 of theRoyal Order of Jesters.

• Appointed to Divan in 2008 by Ill. Potentate PeterSalza as Tripoli’s 1st Ceremonial Master.

• Just joined the York Rite in 2012 and recentlyreceived my first degree.

• Also have been involved with Grand Lodge eversince being Master of the lodge. I was surprised andhonored in 2012 to be appointed to the position of Jr.Grand Steward.

It’s time to vote—Obama vs. Romney, school board, referendums and more. We have an opportunity to changethe future. Similarly, at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Twin Cities we receive feedback, or votes, from our con-stituents too. We use a national survey firm to ask our patient families what they like or didn’t like about a recentvisit to the hospital. Well, our families have spoken and we are very proud to share their feedback.

For this year after nine months, Shriners Hospitals for Children-Twin Cities is ranked in the 94th percentile amongthe 908 hospitals surveyed for outpatient satisfaction. That means that our hospital ranked higher than 94% of allother hospital participants; stated a different way, the hospital was in the top 60 hospitals across the United States ofthe more than 900 hospitals surveyed. In virtually every category, the positive responses greatly exceeded estab-lished norms.

The feedback from families of inpatients during this time period was equally extraordinary. The hospital rankedin the 96th percentile, or top 4% for inpatient satisfaction among all hospitals surveyed.

We take pride in these numbers not because they are higher than others. We are excited to advance our missionof serving kids with special needs in ways that they value. We take a special pride in knowing that our efforts werewell received.

These results only motivate us to do more in 2013. Thanks to all the Shrine drivers, volunteers, hospital doctorsand staff that made these results possible. And thanks to all of those who provide support for the hospital. You madea difference in the lives of many.
