I. General Description:

Tau Beta Pi members helped with running the College of Engineering information table at the

District Science Fair held at Ohio Northern University.

This project helped to raise community awareness of Tau Beta Pi and of Engineering in general to

the off campus community and fulfilled our goals as a service organization by volunteering to assist

with one of Ohio’s District Science Fairs.

DESCRIPTION:


Tau Beta Pi members helped run the event which was held at the local community center

called ReStore. Children were given the opportunity to select gifts to give their parents for

Christmas.


This project helped to raise community awareness of Tau Beta Pi off campus and fulfilled

our goals as a service organization by volunteering in the Ada community.

Members of Tau Beta Pi helped set up and work the Ada Music Feast (a large show choir

competition hosted by the Ada Exempted Village Schools).


It’s important for Tau Beta Pi to be a service in the community, and supporting the Ada High

School community at the Music Feast is a perfect opportunity to do that.

Project name: Hardin County Invitational Quiz Bowl Date(s) of Project: 3/22/2018

DESCRIPTION:

Members of Tau Beta Pi assisted at the Hardin County Invitational Quiz Bowl, which is an event for

high school students from all Hardin County schools to compete against each other. The Ada High

School hosts and the Ada Academic Boosters provide a meal and support for all helpers.


Members of Tau Beta Pi helped at the quiz bowl as readers and timers.


It’s important for Tau Beta Pi to encourage the younger generations to explore the STEM

subjects. It is also important for Tau Beta Pi to support positive events in the community like

this one.

DESCRIPTION:


Tau Beta Pi members helped distribute and grade tests for the TEAMS Competition held at

Ohio Northern University which included 59 teams from 21 high schools.


This project helped to fulfilled our goals as a service organization by volunteering in a

STEM event for high school students.

DESCRIPTION:

This project helped to fulfilled our goals as a service organization by promoting the STEM

Project name: Christmas for those in Need - Shopping Date(s) of Project: 12/9/2017

Members of Tau Beta Pi went shopping to purchase clothes and toys for a family in need

for Christmas.


It’s important for Tau Beta Pi to be a service in the community, and supporting families in

need in the surrounding community during Christmas time is a perfect opportunity to do

that.

DESCRIPTION:


Members of Tau Beta Pi wrapped the gifts purchased for two families in need in the Ada

community and delivered them to the collection site.


It’s important for Tau Beta Pi to be a service in the community, and providing gifts for

children in need in Ada during Christmas is a perfect opportunity to do that.


IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Wrapping paper, tape and ribbons donated by TBP

faculty advisors so no cost incurred.



Tau Beta Pi was able to wrap toys and clothes for children in two different families in need

in the Ada area.

DESCRIPTION:


Members of Tau Beta Pi, in cooperation with the Joint Engineering Council, selected a

member of the College of Engineering who exhibited outstanding leadership skills during

the academic year (2017-2018).


It is a primary goal of the University to produce quality graduates and leadership is one of

the many traits desired in a quality graduate. Granting this award encourages students to

seek the outstanding leadership quality and rewards those who do an exceptional job

exhibiting these qualities.


JEC (Joint Engineering Council)

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: No cost incurred. A plaque is located in the College of

Engineering Biggs Building and the Dean’s office updates it each year.



Tau Beta Pi and JEC selected Nicole Graf, a mechanical engineering senior, for the

Outstanding Leadership Award.

Project name: JEC Christmas Party Date(s) of Project: 12/06/2017

DESCRIPTION:


Members of Tau Beta Pi put on an activity for the JEC (Joint Engineering Council)

Christmas Party. The Tau Beta Pi room provided coloring books and a movie for students

to come relax and watch.


Tau Beta Pi works to bring together students of the University as well as working to support

other engineering organizations. Assisting in the JEC Christmas party made new students

aware of TBP (an organization only for Juniors and Seniors while supporting JEC the group

which brings all of the Engineering organizations together.

books and crayons were donated.



The event was put on, students came and went as desired. Altogether the event was a

success.

Project name: Kappa Phi Sing-A-Thon Date(s) of Project: 12/1/17






DESCRIPTION:


The Tau Beta Pi Ohio Iota chapter sings for one half hour in the ONU student center and

donates $25 to the Kappa Phi, which is a national service club. Each year, the money raised is

donated to a local charity. This year, TBP joined forces with the ONU Phi Sigma Rho

(engineering sorority) to increase our number of singing engineers!


This is a community service event and also an event that gives support to the activities of

another university organization. This event promotes TBP and gives our organization exposure

to the campus community.

The project was completed in conjunction with many other organizations, all organized by the

Kappa Phi Sorority.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements:

$25 donation to Kappa Phi from the chapter. The only personal requirement was to sing.


No special problems were encountered during the project.


This was a great event for members to spend time together and to support another organization’s

philanthropic activity.

Project name: College of Engineering Welcome Fest Date(s) of Project: 8/30/2017






DESCRIPTION:


All engineering organizations are given space to present their organization and events to

new and current students. Tau Beta Pi promoted our weekly and special tutoring options as

well as the annual Pi Day celebration that would occur later in the academic year.


This event promotes TBP and gives our organization exposure to the campus community.

The project was completed in conjunction with many other organizations within the college

of engineering with the overall event organized by the Joint Engineering Council.





This was a great event for members to interact with new students and current students to

Project name: Outstanding Sophomore Scholarship Date(s) of Project: 4/10/2018






DESCRIPTION:


Solicit the top 10 sophomores for applications, read through the applications and

nominations for the award and select a winner. The award is a $500 scholarship from Tau

Beta Pi HQ plus another $500 scholarship (matching funds from the College of

Engineering). The award is given on Honors Day.


This event promotes TBP and gives our organization exposure to the campus community.

Project name: Pie-a-Professor Date(s) of Project: 3/5/17-3/16/17

DESCRIPTION:


The fundraiser was kicked off on Pi day and 50 dollars had to be raised to guarantee one

professor from each engineering department would be pied. Funds were collected for two

weeks with the professors being at the end of the two-week time period.


This project was a fundraiser for our organization and was also a good social event to bring

the College of Engineering together.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: $20 for whip cream, trash bags, money jars and pie trays



This project was a successful fundraiser raising around 150 dollars for our chapter and the

students enjoyed seeing the professors get pied in the face.

DESCRIPTION:


Two members attended the Tau Beta Pi National Convention in Detroit, MI.


The purpose of this convention was to bring TBP chapters nationwide together to take care

of the business side of TBP. Also, this gave chapters a chance to help one another out by

sharing ideas and activities so that each could become the best possible chapters that they

can be.

the ONU College of Engineering.



The chapter was able to voice their opinion on all of the TBP issues and business items at

the national level, aiding the group in becoming better officers.

Project name: Small Bent Polishing Date(s) of Project: October and November 2017

DESCRIPTION:


Electees polished the small bent that they received prior to initiation.


The purpose of this event was for the newest members to take pride in being a part of Tau

Beta Pi and show this by polishing the small bent. A competition was held to recognize the

shiniest bent.


IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Each electee took time to polish the small bent. The cost

of the bent was included in the their initiation fee.

V. Special Problems: One electee did not follow instructions (they used electric equipment to

polish).

Electees initiated into Tau Beta Pi.


The purpose of this event was to initiate the electees that were chosen for their

commitment to the objectives of Tau Beta Pi into the Ohio Iota Chapter of Tau Beta Pi.


Current members reserved the classroom and prepared it for the initiation ceremony.

Members also participated in the ceremony.


The personnel for the event consisted of members to prepare and conduct the ceremony as

well as electees attending the ceremony.



The ceremony went well and initiation proceeded as scheduled.

DESCRIPTION:


A cookout planned by the juniors for senior members of the chapter


Purpose is to bring together the chapter before the end of the year and send off the seniors.


IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: $150 for food. Juniors in the organization prepared the

food and organized the event.

Project name: Initiation Banquet & Reception Date(s) of Project: 11/5/2017

DESCRIPTION:


New members and their families, as well as current members, were invited to attend a

banquet after initiation.


This project allowed new members to mingle with their families, other members, and those

members’ families. Parents were able to learn more about the organization as well.


Invited new members and their families, and we had to make sure food was available and

the room was reserved.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Each meal cost $18. The cost for the newest members

meal. Several members, including the Chief Advisor, were involved in reserving space,

working with catering and updating and having the programs printed.



This project was a success as we almost all families show up to support the new members.

Everyone enjoyed the food as well.

DESCRIPTION:


New electees polish the large bent in front of the engineering college.


This project allows electees to take pride in their organization by making the bent look

pretty.


Informed electees of their duty to clean the bent and made sure enough people showed up

to make it happen.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Supplies were purchased at Keith’s Hardware (about $10)

and some supplies were obtained from the college’s machine shop.



This project was a valuable way to make sure the bent out front remains polished and the

DESCRIPTION:


One member of the Ohio Iota chapter attended the Tau Beta Pi National Convention in

Dearborn, Michigan, as non-voting delegates. One non-voting delegate attended meetings

and went to extra sessions to converse with other officers from other chapters.


Our chapter got many ideas for chapter activities and helped many other chapters with

ideas to increase the participation and effectiveness of their chapters.


IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None. All costs were paid by the college of engineering.



The non-voting delegate learned a lot and was inspired to start new projects that she heard

from other chapters. The officers in attendance (both voting/non-voting) also learned about

Tau Beta Pi as an organization and were able to meet members from other chapters

including many in District 7.

Project name: Weekly Tutoring Date(s) of Project: Every Wednesday






DESCRIPTION:


Tau Beta Pi provided one-on-one tutoring sessions for students of the Engineering College

every Wednesday evening during the fall and spring semesters. Tutoring sessions covered

courses in general engineering, introductory physics, and calculus. The chapter also

offered subject specific tutoring immediately preceding some exams (i.e. circuits, statics).


This project helped to promote the growth and quality of engineering by providing an

educational service to future engineers.


Tutoring sessions were organized by the vice president of the Tau Beta Pi chapter.


Every Wednesday during Fall and Spring semesters, at least two members of Tau Beta Pi

were required to dedicate two hours to pre-scheduled tutoring sessions.


Previously, it had been difficult to answer all student questions at tutoring because of the

diverging knowledge of the spectrum of engineering majors. This year we strived to have

one electrical or computer engineering member tutor with one civil or mechanical

engineering member. This was a good solution, but it proved difficult to fill all of the spots

due to the low number of ECE students in the chapter.


Tutoring proved to be a valuable experience for the promotion of scholarship of campus

engineering students, while providing leadership roles for current Tau Beta Pi members.

The tradition of chapter signature sheets required electees to obtain the signature of one

Tau Beta Pi Advisor and at least two Ohio Iota student members.


This project allows electees to meet and become familiar with current student members and

Tau Beta Pi advisors. It is also an opportunity for electees to demonstrate their desire to

become Ohio Iota members, while not causing too much stress.


After attending an informational meeting and receiving the required forms, this project was

the responsibility of each individual electee.




This project was a valuable way to acquaint electees with current advisors and members.

By seeking out and conversing with advisors and current members, electees experience

the requirements and standards of Tau Beta Pi first hand.

DESCRIPTION:


In addition to the weekly tutoring on Wednesdays, some members volunteered to be on-call

tutors to underclassmen who needed individual attention.


This project not only serves the rest of the engineering student body; it promotes the

attitude among our members that with knowledge comes the responsibility to help others

and highlights the fact that academic excellence can be combined with service.



The members devoted 2-4 hours each per week to helping the underclassmen.



The underclassmen were grateful for the individual attention they receive at hours outside

our normal tutoring times. Our members enjoyed the opportunity to use their knowledge to

aid fellow students.

DESCRIPTION:


Members of Tau Beta Pi contacted prospective students who were accepted to the ONU

College of Engineering and had indicated continued interest in ONU but had not yet

deposited.


It’s important for Tau Beta Pi to be a service to the college and the university by assisting in

recruiting the incoming class of engineering students.


IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: No cost incurred. Dinner (pizza) and a “bank” of phones

were provided by the admissions office.



Tau Beta Pi members were able to contact approximately 150 prospective students to

encourage them to come to ONU. We also answered any questions they had about the

college of engineering or university.

Membership in the Ohio Iota chapter during each semester of the past year is shown in Table 1.

All but one electee accepted the chapter’s invitation for membership and all were initiated in the

fall. Several members were on co-op away from the Ada area for spring or fall semesters and thus

were not able to participate in many projects.
