The Home Maintenance and Safety programme aims to help older people stay in their own homes longer by keeping on top of house maintenance and repairs. Often this work is put off because it feels like it is too hard or could cost too much.

There is an online checklist for inside and outside the house, which gives information on priority and who might do the repairs. You can download this tool from Age Concern’s website: www.ageconcerntauranga.org.nz A printed copy is available from our office at a small cost.

If you would prefer to have your home assessed by a professional company, Age Concern will refer you to Total Home Inspection Services, who have agreed to do the inspection for us at an agreed price. They will provide a report with photographs and give an indication of priority work. Age Concern will provide follow up assistance.

Give us a call if you would like more information on 578 2631.

IT

Synchronise your digital lifeIn many homes today there are numerous phones, tablets, laptops, computers (Windows and MAC) and a TV (Smart or not). One of the best ideas is to synchronise all these devices together (completely or partially). Send email on all devices. Photos taken by any device, appears on all devices. One set of personal documents and files across all devices. It doesn’t matter which piece of technology you pick up, they all can contain access to the exact same original files. And any device you own can ‘cast’ itself onto any TV. Are you ready for this? For a plain English chat, call us 7-days in Tauranga on (07) 262 1000.

7 tips to reduce your blood pressureAlthough this is information may not be suitable for everyone, before you take any kind of action please consult your Doctor. It’s important to know what blood pressure actually is, after all, knowledge is power and the more you know the more you can do about it. What is blood pressure?Your blood pumps oxygen and nutrients around your body and the force that it pumps causes pressure on the blood vessels and this is blood pressure. It’s measured in two metrics. The top number is systolic and the second is Diastolic. A healthy BP reading is about 120/80.The systolic number is the highest amount of pressure the heart produces when it beats, and the diastolic is the lowest amount of pressure after it relaxes. Hence the two numbers.

Why is it so dangerous?Having high blood pressure is dangerous because the pressure on the arteries put a huge amount of stress on them. Imagine a hosepipe bursting at the seams because there is too much pressure pushing the water through. Eventually, something will give way and it’s usually the joins that start to leak.So the problem starts when you have high blood pressure for long periods of time, and most people don’t even know until something happens. It’s referred to as being a ‘silent killer’. That’s why it’s so important to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

People with Hypertension are at risk from serious health conditions such as:Haemorrhagic Strokes - When an artery in the brain ruptures after being weakened by high blood pressure.Kidney Failure - The kidneys are full of arteries and prolonged stress from high BP can cause them to weaken.Enlarged Heart - This is because the heart is a muscle and like any muscle, if you cause it to work hard, it will get bigger and stiffen, this inhibits the hearts capacity to pump blood and increases the risk of a heart attack.

Is it permanent? You can absolutely reduce your blood pressure, but if you have had any health conditions that have arisen as a result then that may be a different story. Even so, reducing it will have positive health benefits.

7 TIPS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE1. Switch out coffee and caffeine for green tea - The reason for this is that caffeine causes sharp spikes in blood pressure. So if it’s high it will go higher. Green Tea has a huge range of health benefits so it’s a win-win.2. Start exercising - This doesn’t have to be super strenuous but studies show that regular exercise can reduce BP for up to 22 hours after the session. PEH - Post Exercise Hypotension. If you are new to exercise than getting active on a daily basis should be a priority. A 30-minute walk every day will start to make a positive difference.Weight Training is also beneficial and I recommend a full body workout twice a week. This workout should concentrate on working the major muscles of the body - Legs, back, chest core.

3. Drink more water - Well hydrated veins and arteries will ease the heart’s workload.

4. Avoid Salt - Salt or sodium because when we consume too much salt, our blood gets salty. Our bodies try to dilute this by drawing in more water, this causes the blood volume, which causes the heart to work harder which increases your blood pressure. It’s advised to eat about 2300mg a day or less. A good way to track this is using a food tracker such as myfitnesspal. But by eating less processed foods, and more fruit and veggies you will be on the right track.

5. Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits and foods high in

potassium which helps balance out the negative effects of salt.• Avocado• Spinach• Sweet potato• Wild-caught salmon• Dried apricots• Pomegranate• Coconut water• White beans• Banana

6. Eat lean protein - A recent study published in Circulation reported that increasing protein intake may actually help lower systolic blood pressure by more than 2 mmHg. So Chicken breast, fish and lean cuts of unprocessed meat will be a staple. How to do it, simply use your hand as a guide. For every meal, a palm-sized amount of protein should do the trick.

7. Lose weight - Doing all of the things above will help you lose weight, after all cleaning up your diet and adding daily exercise will do so much for your weight loss.

8. Bonus - De-stressing is a huge factor and it can be difficult to do. But try, Exercise is a great de-stressor, but more importantly, do things you enjoy, spend time with people you enjoy spending time with, and don’t worry about things you have no control over.Blood pressure can 99% of the time be controlled with lifestyle changes and it’s a lot better than taking medication to do it.But don’t try and tackle everything in one go, just pick one thing and work at it, make it a habit and then tackle something else.

July happenings

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has welcomed the Government $142 million investment to make Kiwi homes healthier.

This spending in a new four-year programme, known as Warmer Kiwi Homes, will make the homes of lower-income New Zealanders warmer and drier by providing grants to insulate and heat homes, says EECA Chief Executive Andrew Caseley.

“Too many homes are cold and damp, leading to preventable diseases such as rheumatic fever and asthma. That’s a burden on Kiwi families, as well as the health system.”

Mr Caseley says some parts of the community are particularly at risk.

“Low-income families, young children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the impacts of living in cold, damp housing.”

The first year of the programme will focus on ceiling and underfloor insulation as the highest priority for creating a warm, dry home, Mr Caseley says.

“Homes that aren’t properly insulated are very costly to heat, with heat escaping through the ceiling and underfloor.”

“Lower-income home owners will

be able to access grants covering two thirds of the cost of installing ceiling and underfloor insulation.”

Grants to install heating appliances will be available from July 2019, Mr Caseley says.

Warmer Kiwi Homes will be delivered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) which is working through details of the new grants programme.

Frequently asked questions:

When will the new Warmer Kiwi Homes start?Home owners can apply for grants from 1 July 2018. Further details will be posted on EECA’s Energywise website.

Who is eligible for grants? Those on low incomes who own and live in their homes (not landlords) are eligible.Low income will be defined as those who either:• have a Community Services Card, OR• live in a New Zealand Deprivation Index decile 9 or 10 area, OR• are families referred through the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Homes Initiative.

What do the grants cover? The grants cover ceiling and

underfloor insulation and ground moisture barriers. From year two they will also cover the installation of a heating device. Details on which heating devices will be funded are still being worked through.

How many homes will be insulated?EECA estimates 52,000 houses will be insulated or have a heater installed over the four years of the programme (some will receive both).

Why are heating measures being brought in later?Heating measures will be added from 1 July 2019 to align with the heating standards being developed under the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act. Insulation is always the first priority for creating a warm, dry home.

Computer ConundrumHi, Dirk here again at Cyba IT to help fix your computer conundrum. This month I’d like to talk about Anti-Virus software.

A good Anti-Virus program is the first defence to stop any unruly behaviour. The best paid AV to date is called ESET NOD32 which has been around since 1987 and gives the best overall protection without putting too much of a strain on your computer. The best free AV solutions are Avast and AVG Anti-virus. These provide sufficient protection but often have pop-ups trying to get you to fork out for the paid version which can be annoying. Microsoft also offer a free built-in Anti-Virus called Windows Defender which initially wasn’t much bottle but has gotten better over the years.

If you need any assistance installing, updating or running these please let me know.

Back in Time - 3 July 1963Can you remember what you were doing on 3 July 1963 when New Zealand experienced its worst air accident? National Airways Corporation DC3 crashed in the Kaimai Ranges with the loss of 23 people on board. The flight was on its way from Auckland to Wellington via Tauranga, Gisborne and Napier. Weather conditions were stormy. Ferocious winds along with insufficient altitude and navigational problems contributed to the crash. It took two days to reach the crash site. A Court of Inquiry noted that there was no distance measuring equipment at Tauranga airport, technology which would have given the pilot an accurate indication of how far he was from his destination. It recommended that this equipment be installed at all commercial airports and suggested a review of minimum safe altitudes for flights. Aircraft should carry locator beacons, so they could be found quickly if they crashed.

Fast forward to today. Tauranga and the region has experienced considerable growth over the last decade and this also includes passenger volumes passing through Tauranga Airport. The existing airport terminal was constructed in 1967. To keep up with demand and future growth, major redevelopment work has commenced on the airport terminal that will take approximately 15 months to complete. Current services are still available whilst the redevelopment work happens. For further information visit: www.tauranga.govt.nz

Library Law continues in July with Enduring Powers of Attorney11 July, 5.30pm.We should all have Powers of Attorney. These are the documents that appoint a person who can make decisions on your behalf if you cannot. As we get older, of if we suffer from unexpected illness, we need to make sure that someone is ready to help us

Library Corner pay bills, sell our house and arrange any medical care on our behalf. When preparing a Power of Attorney, you need to consider who is best for the different roles - personal care and welfare, and property. We can highlight some of the issues and explain how these important documents work. These seminars are free and open to anyone to attend. If you’d like to come along, please let us know by emailing: [email protected] or phoning 577 7177.
