the sustainable road to success

There is a growing interest globally in environmentally and socially responsible tourism. According to a survey by IPK International, sustainability is one of the top ten decision-making criteria for international travel-lers when it comes to choosing their destination, with 20 per

cent citing it as one of their top three factors. Against this back-ground, the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) has developed a comprehensive strategy that positions Germany internationally as a sustainable travel destination. This includes the development of products and services aimed at additional target groups. This strategy is being implemented by the GNTB

together with its partners in the German travel industry. “Sustain-ability is playing an increasingly important role in the choice of travel destination,” says Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the GNTB. “Germany is well positioned to compete on that front with other interna-tional destinations.”

Berlin offers an extraordi-nary variety of shopping possi-bilities in large shopping centres, department stores, smaller shops or elegant boutiques. If you love classic designer fashion, are hunting for bargains, or seeking out the latest fashion trends, you will certainly get your money’s worth in Germany’s capital city.

Important Infor-matIon for shoppers from out-of-town: shopping in Berlin is a bit different from shopping in other German cities. the fact that the city was divided for so longer by the Berlin wall has resulted in there is not being a single city centre or pedestrian zone. Instead, there are many shopping areas in addition to the two most famous, the Kurfürstendamm and friedrichstraße, which, for to keep it simple, can be divided into City west and City east.

Brand-new in City west is BIKInI BerlIn, open since april 2014. Germany‘s first concept mall is located directly adjacent to the Zoological Garden and targets a sophisticated audience conscious of the latest trends and styles. three storeys offer fashion, lifestyle, restaurants and pop-up shops run by some of the CIty‘s Great younG desIGners. the highlight: the 7,000 m2 rooftop terrace. open to everyone, the terrace overlooks at the monkey enclo-sures at the zoo. stretching between Zoo and the Kaiser wilhelm memorial Church, the Bikini Berlin is the ideal place to start exploring the many shop-ping options in City west. the Kurfürstendamm (also known as Ku´damm) and tauentzien-straße are Berlin’s most cele-brated shopping promenades in the western part of the city and are both within walking distance from Bikini Berlin. the Kauf-haus des westens, in short

Kadewe, is located at witten-bergplatz in schöneberg and is the largest department store in mainland europe: here, those enamoured with luxury will find much more than their wide range of ladies’ and gentlemen’s inter-national designer label fashion. the cosmetics, jewellery, books, Cds, tableware and home acces-sories on display extend over six storeys. the speciality foods section is one of the store’s highlights and a must, and not just for tourists. at the western end of the Ku´damm, you can find exclusive designers such as lagerfeld, lacoste and tommy Hilfiger. Between Uhlandstraße and adenauer platz, luxury labels such as Bulgari, Chanel, louis Vuitton, Valentino and Gucci are located side-by-side. the quiet side streets on the left and right of uhlandstraße possess plenty of charm, too. In the magnificent fin-de-siècle buildings you will-find elegant boutiques with an exclusive range of fashion and design, as well as chic cafés and restaurants.

The newly renovated Haus Cumberland is one of Berlin’s chicest addresses. The listed building was designed as a grand residential hotel by Robert Leibnitz in 1911-12 and covers around 10,000 square metres between Kurfürstendamm 193-194 and Lietzenburger Straße 104-106. The renovated building is anchored by another 14 oz. shop by Karl-Heinz Müller, founder of the Bread & Butter Fashion Show. With eight-metre high ceilings, stucco décor and consistently high-priced brand names, ensconced in a library from the Palais Lichtenstein (Vienna), this 600 square metre retail space is the only one of its kind in Europe. Other fine shops include Brunello Cucinelli and Maurice Lacroix and a café seating 200 with its own patis-serie by Roland Mary. Next door on the traditional promenade, you find the equally glamorous project Kudamm N° 195.

The Neue Kranzler-Eck on Joachimstaler Straße connects Kurfürstendamm and Kant-straße, the second largest shop-ping street in the Charlotten-burg-Wilmersdorf district. It runs from Breitscheidplatz to Amtsgerichtsplatz and, together with Neue Kantstaße, forms the connecting axis between the Gedächtniskirche (Memo-rial Church) and the Funk-turm (Radio Tower) at the Messegelände (Berlin Exhibition Centre).

Suarezstraße offers antique shops. In the Stilwerk, approx-imately 50 interior decora-tion and designer shops of the upmarket sector are repre-sented, including Bang & Olufsen, Bulthaup and Ligne Roset. In contrast, Savignyplatz provides shopping enthusiasts and pass-ers-by with a colourful and varied selection of small shops, galleries and restaurants.

Kantstraße crosses Wilm-ersdorfer Straße. The area from Schillerstraße to the S-Bahnhof Charlottenburg has been made into a traffic-calmed pedes-trian zone. The section north of the pedestrian zone is char-acterised by tenement buildings with SMALL RETAIL SHOPS. A particular highlight is the Rogacki Delicatessen which is famous throughout Berlin for its fish products.

The MALL OF BERLIN open since September 2014 at Leipziger Platz, about a block east of Potsdamer Platz. Shopping in City East

After the Kurfürstendamm, Friedrichstraße, located in the Mitte district, counts as Berlin‘s second most important shop-ping address. It runs from Oran-ienburger Tor to Mehringplatz at Hallesches Tor in Kreuz-berg. Dussmann, the renowned culture store, located close to the Friedrichstraße S- and U-Bahn stations is a firm attrac-tion for fans of books and music with its huge selection stretching over five storeys; plus, it is open until midnight.

South of this splendid Berlin Boulevard you will find the representative showrooms of car manufacturers, boutiques of exclusive clothing brands and spacious temples of luxury. The Friedrichstadtpassagen are home to the well-known Galeries Lafayette as well as Quartiere 205 and 206, which offer interna-tional styles for the fashion elite. Here, pure luxury is offered over a surface area of almost 3,000 square metres: international designer clothes, accessories, jewellery, books, photographic art and flowers. The department store has recently expanded to include the Cabinet, which pres-ents 60 progressive labels.

In Galeries Lafayette you will find French fashion and an in-house delicatessen. But it’s even worth visiting just to gaze at the store’s glass architecture, designed by Jean Nouvel. Very close-by, at Gendarmenmarkt, is The Corner Berlin, one of the trendiest concept stores in the world. It is a mixture of boutique, gallery and café. As well as vintage clothing from Yves Saint Laurent or Chloé, international luxury brands and newcomer fashion, it offers cosmetics, accessories, furniture, technical goods and selected fashion & art books in its range.

An interesting shopping address is the trendy Mitte district, close to Hackesche Markt. The small galleries and fashion boutiques of young international labels and local designers in and around the Hackesche Höfe ranges from distinctive fashion, offbeat shoes, jewellery and accesso-ries to colourful bric-a-brac and amusing gifts. The Rosenhöfe, designed by the Baller archi-tects, with their mix of fashion, design and gastronomy, are also a tempting destination. They link Rosenthaler and Sophienstraße. The Heckmann Höfe, restored with attention to their orig-inal detail, located between the former Postfuhramt and

the Berlin Synagogue in Oranien-burger Straße, are also well worth seeing. This group of end-to-end courtyards leads to August-straße. Small shops offer a selec-tion of offbeat design, culture, small businesses and gastronomy. In the Bonbonmacherei, orig-inal Berlin Bonbons are boiled traditionally over an open fire.

During GDR times, the shopping centre of the East Berliners was Alexanderplatz. It has largely been renovated and today draws both Berliners and tourists alike. One highlight is the “Alexa” where you can experience shopping, entertain-ment and recreation on five storeys – 180 specialist shops over a surface areas totalling 56, 000 square metre. In the imme-diate vicinity is the Nikolaiviertel which has been renovated in its original medieval style. As well as several interesting museums you can also find numerous small shops here offering souvenirs, arts and crafts and antiques.

The hip Berlin style and newest trends can be discovered in the eastern trendy district of Prenzlauer Berg around Schön-hauser Allee and Kastanie-nallee, or in Friedrichshain near Boxhagener Platz – far away from the large consumer shop-ping areas. In Bergmannstraße in the district of Kreuzberg you can find second-hand fashion, trendy home accessories and sounds from the big city.

Kastanienallee in the eastern district of Prenzlauer Berg doesn‘t bear the nickname Casting Allee for nothing; and Friedrichshain is visibly turning into the creative district of Fashionhain. Just like in Mitte and Kreuzberg, style conscious Berliners and their visitors will find that it is worth seeking out the smaller side streets.

In Mitte there are many little side streets between Oranien-burger Tor, Hackesche Markt and Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz with interesting galleries and plenty of fashion stores. Mulackstraße and Gipsstraße also like to be referred to as Berlin’s little Soho due to their mix of regional and international design. Both Alte and Neue Schönhauser Straße and Münzstraße are a top loca-tion for the flagship stores of young international brands. Leyla Piedayesh alias Lala Berlin sells her high end knitted goods on Mulackstraße; the parallel street is called Linienstraße and is home to the Kaviar Gauche fashion label. Eastwards of Rosenthaler Platz in the direc-tion of Prenzlauer Allee is where

other young labels have recently settled, primarily offering urban fashion in their programme.

The trendy district of Prenzlauer Berg with its Casting Allee is regarded as the epitome of young Berlin designer fashion on the grounds of the numerous boutiques and the corresponding clientele. But Weinbergsweg, Veteranen-straße and Fehrbelinerstraße also have shopping highlights on offer. This is home, for example, to Anna Franke and Janine Weber’s Majaco label with fans around the world including Jessica Schwarz and Anna Loos. There‘s also plenty to discover in Oderberger Straße such as the lingerie world of Made-moiselle Mimi. Nearby, fans of Berlin fashion will find a trea-sure trove at „Heimzucht“. As well as fashion made in Berlin, the shop also offers original gifts by creative Berliners. (Danziger Straße 10, U- Eberswalder Straße).

In the streets around the Helmholtzplatz and near Koll-witzplatz, trendy shoppers will find plenty of hip stores. The colourful interior of Glaube und Wahrheit is full of hand-made stuffed animals, toys, pillows, fashion and accessories for women and children. These unique pieces are made in the back of the shop with a loving attention to detail. No less colourful is Misses & Marbles in Raumerstraße with its constant supply of freshly baked cakes and all kinds of things that make life beautiful.

In the Marienburger Straße, WERTVOLL BERLIN is a shop specialized in items made from sustainable resources: every-thing available for purchase here, be it fashion, accessories or gift articles, is either fair-trade, made from ecological materials, or handmade.

Between Frankfurter Allee and Warschauer Straße, the eastern district of Friedrichshain has plenty to offer from Berlin’s creative scene. Around Boxha-gener Platz and Simon-Dach Straße countless shops and ateliers are waiting to be discov-ered by fashion enthusiasts. Wühlischstraße and Koperni-kusstraße into which it extends is becoming the new trendy fashion mile. Several fashion boutiques have joined together under the name Fashionhain to highlight the creative diversity of their Kiez. A Shopping Night is held on selected Saturdays. As well as clothes from stores such as Superschlüpfer,

Prachtmädchen or Latte wie Hose, there is music and special promotions on the topic of fashion and, of course, culinary delicacies for a little mid-shop-ping snack.

In Kreuzberg there are many bric-a-brac and antique shops, second-hand fashion and small individual shops with offbeat fashion collections or way-out accessories in the lively Berg-mannstraße and along Mehring-damm. The vintage section of the clothing market has clothes for sale by the kilo, with 30% off during happy hour every Tuesday from 11 am - 3 pm.

For trend shopping in the multicultural district of Kreuz-berg, you should also head over to Oranienstraße and Wrangel Kiez. The Voo Store, featuring hip designer clothes with a raw industrial charm, is however located in a ‘rocked-out’ courtyard.

Fashion and Design “made in Berlin”

The BFN Concept Store in the Hackesche Höfe of the Mitte district also presents a wide selection of Berlin fashion, ranging from casual to high fashion, on two storeys.

Also located in Mitte is the Konk fashion store. It is the number one address for Berlin fashion from the upmarket and avant-garde sector. The Kaviar Gauche collection also hangs in this uniquely designed shop.

Frankfurt’s skyline is ever-changing – the newest sky-scrapers are already under construction and many more are in the design stages. One of the most notable attractions is the Main Tow-er, built by the Hamburg company Schweger and Partner and one of the f irst skyscrapers open to the general public . The Main Tower offers a restaurant on the 53rd f loor and a spectacular and panoramic observation plat-form on the 55th f loor - 200 meters above Frankfurt.

Facets of Frankfurt

When Frankfurt was born, none of these developments were even hinted at. The former Roman city “Nida”, later part of the Carolingian Palatinate , emerged from the depths of history on the 22nd of February 794, to be mentioned in off icial doc-uments as Frankfurt. The occasion was a convention of great signif icance for the whole of Europe - a German Empire synod held by Charlemagne. The city was named francono furd after its geographical location, being situated near a natural ford close to where the Main river meets the Rhine - right at the heart of the Franconian Empire .

Although never a bishop seat, Frankfurt’s Dom, or cathe-dral, was the place where German kings were chosen from 1356 onwards; German Emperors were also crowned there some 200 years later. The banquets that followed were held in the imperial hall or Römer, a building complex consisting of three half-tim-bered merchant houses. In 1405, the city purchased the complex and converted it to the town hall . Ever since, the three-gabled si lhouette of the building has been the symbol of the city. Even today, Frank-furt’s city council - an elected municipal parl iament - holds its meetings here. As far back as the Middle Ages, fairs and markets took place inside the town hall ’s Römerhallen and on the Römerberg out-side . Today, the Römerberg is in the heart of the old town center and a popular tourist destination. And the Römer-hallen are sti l l in demand as a venue for a large variety of events.Not far from the Römer is the St. Paul’s Church, where the f irst German National Assembly was held in 1848. Since then, the church has been known as the cradle of German democracy.

NachhaltigkeitDue mainly to the 13 museums located on both sides of the Main, Frankfurt has devel-oped a reputation as a signif icant cultural center. The museum embankment represents

a unique synthesis of renowned exhibition culture and far-sighted city planning. Sev-eral 19th century buildings worthy of preservation were gutted and given a new lease

of l i fe; their exteriors are sti l l a characteristic feature of the riverbank. Many of the newer buildings and extensions are true architectural gems, designed by internationally renowned architects. The Museum of Modern Art, designed by Viennese architect Hans

Hollein, is one such gem, the building being shaped l ike a sl ice of cake. Other highlights from Frankfurt’s range of museums are the German Architecture Museum and the Mu-

seum of Communication. With its healthy budget for cultural events - unusually high for German local authorities - the city has been able to fund not only opera, ballet and

theatre productions, but also numerous private theaters.

Another symbol of Frankfurt’s commitment to culture is the Concert and Congress Centre Alte Oper Frankfurt, rebuilt after the Second World War to return it to its original Italian Renaissance style. The university, founded in 1914, carries the name of Frankfurt’s most famous son, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He was born in Frankfurt on the 28th of August 1749, spending the early part of his life here. His birthplace is one of Frankfurt’s most pop-ular tourist attractions, and also includes the Goethe Museum. As the home of continental Europe’s largest airport (renamed Fraport AG after listing on the stock exchange in 2001), biggest passenger train station and a major over-land traffic hub, Frankfurt is easily reached from within Germany and further afield. As organizers and participants at international congresses are pleased to confirm, more tourists and business travelers from other countries visit Frankfurt than any other German city. Thanks to its favorable traffic connec-tions, Frankfurt is one of Europe’s oldest trading centers north of the Alps. The first trade fairs are known to have taken place here as early as the 11th century. Today, 10 centuries later, Frankfurt is one of the world’s most signifi-cant trade fair locations. Kaiser Friedrich II declared it the world‘s first trade fair city by way of imperial privilege in 1240.

The Fashion Week is the meeting point for buyers, retailers and press representa-tives from the textile industry.

Since Bread & Butter returned to Berlin in 2009, one fashion highlight after another has flocked to the city. In addi-tion to the world’s largest trade fair for young, urban fashion, the latest trends are also shown at the Premium, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013,

the street-wear show Bright and the New Yorker trade show (capsule). In July 2014, Bread & Butter will open its doors to the public for the first time on the final two days of the show.

Berlin also features its green fashions at shows at Showfloor Berlin, the Lavera Showfloor, the GREENshowroom and the Ethical Fashion Show. The latest collections from around the world are featured on the catwalks of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at the Branden-burg Gate. During Fashion Week, all of Mitte turns into a public showroom with mile upon mile of different fashion and design exhibitions. The Federal Ministry of the Environment and the Federal Environmental Agency awarded the first Federal Ecodesign Prize in January 2012. The goal was to make good examples of ecodesign better known and to encourage innovation in this area. The Internationales Design Zentrum Berlin (IDZ) is respon-sible for the design and imple-mentation of the competition which is open to designers and design firms. A total of twelve products and concepts received the Federal Ecodesign Prize in 2013. The winning projects show how versatile ecodesign can really be. Topics have included “Life Cycle Tower” for high-rise buildings, handmade up-cy-cled carpets and solar-powered newsstands. The competition is held annually.
