PREVIOUSLY: When nerdy Oliver falls in love with beautiful Casey, he has no idea that she’s been marked by her evil ex-boyfriend Gavin to be possessed by Kavaleth, Lord of Kaos. Now, Oliver must choose whether or not to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save his girlfriend’s soul and the very earth from the all consuming demon Kaveleth. Kavelth is in control of Casey, and it couldn’t have happened at a worse time – while enjoying dinner with Oliver’s mom and brother (who happens to be a priest).

KISS 4K #5 By Fred Van LenteAs the KISS 4K try to fi nd out what has happened to their families, they are attacked by the Destroyer Cult’s henchman Exciter and his rogues gallery (Hard Times, Night Machine, Deuce, Charisma, and Strutter).
HERO BY NIGHT TPB By D.J. Coffman, Jason EmburyThis volume collects the 4-issue miniseries by D.J. Coffman. Jack King discovers the secret lair of the original Hero By Night packed with gadgets, a power ring and the journals he wrote in during his decade as a famous crime fi ghter. Will Jack sell the treasure off, or will destiny lead him to become the next Hero By Night?
ATLANTIS RISING #1 By Scott O. Brown, Tim Irwin, and Andy ElderAfter more than a thousand years of peaceful coexistence, Atlantis and the surface world are on the brink of war with the fate of both civilizations hanging in the balance. This issue begins the war that will decide the fate of all humanity and Atlanteans.
GHOSTING #3 By Fred Van Lente, Charles Carvalho, Tom SmithIt isn’t easy being a pledge. Warren has been committed to a psych ward after his run in with Ghoster and is warning that the ghost has come back to kill all the Omegas and Epsilons, and he may be right. One of our four heroes will meet their untimely demise, while two of the others might fi nd love….
CONSUMED #4 By Asa Shumskas-Tait, Dennis Budd, Joe Caramagna and Stu ChaifetzIn this shocking conclusion, Oliver must choose whether or not to make the ultimate sacrifi ce in order to save his girlfriend’s soul and the very earth from the all consuming demon Kaveleth. But nothing is ever that simple in Oliver’s life.
UNIQUE TPB By Dean Motter, Dennis Calero This volume collects the 3-issue miniseries by Dean Motter. Convinced all his life that he was schizophrenic because of strange visions of another world, Jon Geoffries learns that he is seeing the Earth’s twin, and that he is a Unique, one of the few people with no doppelganger on the other world... and the power to move between them at will. Now he’s a target of ruthless enemies who plan to use the connection between these two Earths to control the fates of billions.
How did you break into being a colorist?Back in 1989 after attending night classes at Joe Kubert School here in New Jersey, I met Marvel’s promotional editor, Fabian Nicieza at my local comic shop and showed him some samples of my work and he liked my work so much that he offered me the coloring gig on an Iron Man promotional poster drawn by Bob Layton. After that things took off for me and now after 18 years of working for Marvel, DC, and many different comic book publishers I have now added Platinum to the list with Blood Nation and Ghosting. The thing that I love about doing these comics is that it gives me the chance to do something else besides the bright and colorful superhero work I’m known for and play around with the darker scarier side of coloring.
For movies, sound sets the emotional stage for a viewer, in comics it’s the colors – what inspiration do you use to set the mood?I look at what works in the fi lms and try to capture that same lighting and mood created by the fi lms and try to translate it to the comic page.
As you’ve been in the industry for quite a while, how was the transition from a traditional airbrush/paint to digital? Do you still use the airbrush or is digital the way to go?
That’s a tough question. When I started out we were still only doing color guides which were then sent to a separation house to do the fi nal page color separations. They tried to follow our guides but most of the time the jobs were never as good looking as our guides were.
Today with the advent of computer coloring I have complete control of the coloring and it allows me to always try new things all the time because if I do something I don’t like corrections are very easy to make.
What advice do you have for the upcoming colorists or people that want to break into the industry?Start small and always do your best work because if you rush out a job it will always come back to haunt you.
The best advice I ever got was from THE KING himself Jack Kirby! When he told me years ago… “Don’t quit your day job kid—until you’re getting enough work to pay your mortgage—and even then never feel secure enough that you will always have work to pay it in this cutthroat biz!”
Tough words but true!
I love a blank page, fi lling it up with brand new thoughts, and
brainstorming with others about what can go on that page
too. I actually THRIVE on putting together 1000-page bibles
of characters, and, at the same time, writing up business
ideas. So pushing keys on my keyboard is something I can do.
E-mails? There can be hundreds in a day. The more complex
the better. So why is simple so hard?
For a few years when I lived in a house that had lots of spiders,
I fi nally got over my aversion to them. Now that I live in a
house without spiders, well, I don’t like them again.
What do these things have to do with one another? And what
does that have to do with a blog? Well, I’ve been hesitant to
start up a blog even though all the people here keep pushing
me to do so and even though I love talking about comic books.
Well, they found the way to win. They put a big piece of white
paper in front of me every day on my desktop. They’re putting
“Scott’s Blog” as a button our nav bar (thankfully only on our
corporate site, www.PlatinumStudios.com). Why? Because
they know that if it’s staring me in the face, I’ll need to type.
By the way, I feel safe giving you that URL because most
of you would rather go to our comics site
(www.PlatinumStudiosComics.com).
So it’s kinda like spiders, I think. If I were around them daily,
they wouldn’t “bug” me as much (sorry!). If I write my blog daily,
words will just fl ow. I hope. You can all write nasty comments
on it if I don’t. :-)
The Letters Column
You know what I miss? I miss the letters columns in comics.
Fans and creators write them everyday on our webcomics site,
www.DrunkDuck.com, but we haven’t had them in our print
comics. I want ‘em. I myself wrote tons and tons before I got
behind the scenes in this business and looked eagerly every
month, to no avail.
We also need a name for the column and the best one we could
come up with internally was “DJ’s Shillbox”. I know you can do
better than that, so send your suggestions or letters in to:
In the meantime….
All the best,
