Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHello All! We hope your week is going well

and just wanted to say thanks for picking up this issue of Tidbits from one of our valued business locations - be sure to give them a big THANKS for making Tidbits available at their establishment. It is a very important way in

which we bring Tidbits to thousand and thousands of people each and every week - we think of it as meeting you half way. In this part of the country people understand that. Say you want to borrow someone's hay wagon. You could just sit on your thumbs and wait or you could head in their direction and meet them half way... it's neighborly thing do.

With Tidbits that is also our philosophy, meeting our read-ers and advertisers half way. We are willing work hard and do our part to make the ad prices affordable for local busi-nesses and bring the paper to over 37 area towns for you to pick when you are out and about in the local community.

Lynette and I can't say it enough.. THANK YOU! Thanks also to the people we see at the gas stations, restaurants, gro-cery stores, etc. that let us know they are enjoying Tidbits. We greatly appreciate it - especially the thumbs up and honks when we are out on the highways!

Have a wonderful 4th of July and try to get out to one or more of the fun events happening here in Northeast South Dakota and West Central Minnesota - and stay safe out there!

Next week we'll share some pictures and let you know how the backyard garden is going!

• It was Martin Luther King Jr. who made the following sage observation: “In the end, we will remember not the words

of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”• If you head up to the top floor of the U.S. Supreme

Court building, you’ll find a basketball court. It’s known, of course, as “the highest court in the land.”

• During the filming of the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” the dog that played Toto was paid $125 per week. In contrast, the actors who played the munch-kins were paid $100 per week -- and their manager, Leo Singer, kept half of that.

• Those who study such things say that goats have accents.

• In Germany in the 1500s, a court physician by the name of Oswaldt Gabelthouer wrote a medical book full of remedies that he guaranteed would be effec-tive. For insanity, the patient must cut his or her hair

by Samantha Weaver

close to the head, then tie two halves of a ram’s liver to the head. A severe case of epilepsy, he claimed, could be cured if the patient wore the right eye of a wolf and the left eye of a she-wolf on a thong about the neck for three months; also, the patient had to forgo bathing during that time. There’s no mention in the record at hand of how a patient would go about redeeming the guarantee.

• If you’re suffering from xanthodontia, don’t wor-ry; a dentist can help whiten those yellow teeth.

• • •Thought for the Day

“The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by

those who don’t have it.”

-- George Bernard Shaw

Use fireworks outdoors only.

Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket).

Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine them.

Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.

Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”

Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.

Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.

• On July 9, 1777, New York elects Brig. Gen. George Clinton as the first governor of the independent

state of New York. Clinton’s career was marked by his hatred of Brit-ish loyalists, called Tories. He kept the public’s tax burden low by confiscating and selling land belonging to Tories to maintain state coffers.• On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt is executed for her role as a conspira-tor in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Surratt’s boardinghouse, a few blocks from Ford’s Theatre, where Lincoln was murdered, served as the place where a group of Confederate supporters conspired to assassinate the president.• On July 8, 1898, notorious con man “Soapy” Smith is murdered in Skagway, Alaska. Smith earned his nickname “Soapy” selling bars of soap wrapped in blue tissue paper. He promised crowds that a few lucky purchasers would find a $100 bill wrapped inside the $5 bars of soap.• On July 13, 1951, rivers across eastern Kansas crest well above

flood stage, and 500,000 people are left homeless. Two million acres of farmlands were lost. In addition, the flooding caused fires and ex-plosions in refinery oil tanks on the banks of the Kansas River.• On July 11, 1960, novelty song “Alley Oop” tops the Billboard pop chart. Alley Oop was the name of a time-traveling caveman in a com-ic strip of the same name created in 1932 by cartoonist V.T. Hamlin.• On July 12, 1984, Walter Mondale, Democratic presidential can-didate, announces that he has chosen Geraldine Ferraro as his run-ning mate, the first woman nominated by a major party for the vice presidency. • On July 10, 1992, the Alaska court of appeals overturns the convic-tion of Joseph Hazelwood, the former captain of the oil tanker Exxon Valdez. Hazelwood, who was found guilty of negligence for his role in the massive oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989, successfully argued that he was entitled to immunity from prosecution because he had reported the oil spill to authorities 20 minutes after the ship ran aground.

Q: I loved “Six Feet Under,” and won-dered what one of my favorite actresses from that show, Lauren Am-

brose, has been doing lately. When can I see her in a TV show again? -- Ashley A., via email

A: Lauren stars in the new Lifetime mov-ie called “Deliverance Creek,” which pre-mieres Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The movie is executive-produced by acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks (“The Notebook,” “Safe Haven”). It is a revenge drama centering on a widow and mother of three, Belle Gatlin Barlowe (played by Lauren), who is determined to protect her family and land at any cost during the Civil War. When the corrupt bank that runs their town pushes Belle into becoming an outlaw, the stakes become personal, setting off a chain of events that force her to question whether it’s better to be good or to survive.

• • •Q: Angela Kinsey has to be one of the

funniest women on television; I love her re-curring role on “New Girl.” Will she star in anything of her own soon? -- Judy T., Santa Fe, N.M.

A: The talented actress, who’s perhaps best known for co-starring on “The Of-fice,” returns to a comedy series when she co-stars in “The Hotwives of Orlando,” a Hulu original series premiering Tuesday, July 15. As you can probably tell by the title, the series is a riff on all the “Real Housewives” series, which follows An-gela as the Religious Zealot, Casey Wilson as the Trophy Wife, Kristen Schaal as the Drug-Addled Former Child Star, Tymber-lee Hill as the Entrepreneur, Danielle Sch-

neider as the Bankrupt Overspender, and Andrea Savage as the Cougar. Paul Scheer (who also is a producer on the series) co-stars as Matty Green, the Enthusiastic TV Producer.

As to why they felt now was the right time for the series debut, Scheer stated: “For far too long, reality shows have set obscenely high standards for comedy, and we are going to try to

take this back.” Hulu Plus subscribers will have access to all epi-sodes on July 15; ev-eryone else can watch only the first two epi-sodes on July 15, with a new one each subse-quent week.

• • •Q: Michael Grazia-

dei was supposed to be in an ABC series called “Westside,” but I have yet to hear anything about it. Can you tell me what’s up

with that? --Janet Y., via emailA: The former star of “The Young

and the Restless” was cast as a series regular in the 2013 ABC pilot; how-ever, the network decided not to pick up the show. Never fear: Michael has been tapped to co-star in the Lifetime series called “The Lottery,” which is set in a dystopian future driven by a global fertility crisis. Michael stars as Kyle, a recovering alcoholic and single father of one of the last chil-dren born in the country. The show premieres Sunday, July 20, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Q: I grew up in West Texas before the era of air conditioning. We had electric fans scattered throughout our house to help us survive the sum-mer heat. I still have three of them, all from the 1930s and ‘40s. Are they considered collectible? -- Sue Beth, Spring Branch, Texas

A: If your vintage fans have brass blades, you have the most collectible. Serious enthusiasts seek out older fans with such features as Art Deco de-signs and exposed coils, and even rarer ones with light bulbs mounted on the unit. If the paint is in reasonably good shape and the fan is in working condition, the value may surprise you. For exam-ple, fans spotted recently include a Westinghouse Vane Oscillator, $650; an Emerson three-speed Trojan, $400; a GE “Whiz,” $55; and an Emerson “Junior,” $75.

The American Fan Collector Association is one of the better groups and publishes a nifty news-

• • •Q: I have about a dozen issues

of the Saturday Evening Post from the 1960s. They are in excellent condition, but no covers of his-torical interest. Is there a market

for such publications? -- Bill, Louisiana, Mo.A: Most issues of the Saturday Evening Post

from this period sell in the $10 to $20 range, de-pending on both content and condition. The is-sues covering the assassination of John Kennedy in 1963 are popular with collectors, but rarely sell for more than about $25.

• • •Q: While cleaning out my mom’s desk, I found

about a dozen sheets of Christmas seals from the 1950s. I plan to sell them at a garage sale and wonder how I should price them. -- Donna, Mitch-ell, S.D.

A: Occasionally sheets of Christmas seals pop up at shops and antiques malls. Even though they are collectible, prices have remained fairly stag-nant. Most of the examples I have seen from the 1950s generally sell for about a dollar a sheet.
