Tips To Keep Kids Safe While Shopping

Don’t Talk to Strangers - In a crowded place, a predator can easily slip away with a child. Remind your kids not to leave your side and not to accept goodies or go off with strangers.

Carry A Snapshot - It’s better safe than sorry so use your phone to capture your child on fi lm before entering a crowded place. That way if anything were to happen, you would know what he was wearing.

Stay Seated in Shopping Carts - While it’s tempting to let an antsy tot climb in or around the shopping cart, it’s not a safe practice.

Map Out a Plan - Once you get to the mall, map out a plan in case your family gets separated. Pick a central and easily accessible place to meet up. Your tot’s favorite store is an ideal destination as the youngster will likely remember its location and name. Ad-vise small kids to seek store personnel or a security guard for assistance.

Pay Attention In Parking Lots - People in a mad dash to the store may not look both ways before backing out.

RESTAURANT REVIEWIf you haven’t traveled down Indian River Drive recently and checked out the culinary efforts of Chef Scott at the Chill & Grill then you are sorely missing out.

From their own unique version of nachos made with home made potato chips, pulled pork and more to their famous fi sh tacos, the Riverfront Chill N Grill has established itself as one of the favorite must-have spots for dining in the area.

Chef Scott and his wife have transformed a location that has seen many restaurants come and go - into a warm friendly spot where you can sit and enjoy a gorgeous view of the In-dian River Lagoon while feasting on the catch of the day.

While the menu is small and features the local fresh catch from our area, the fl avors are huge from their Key Lime pies, brownie desserts to this writer’s favorite - Peanut Butter Pie.

You HAVE to try the Asian BBQ Duck Wings!! If other restaurants could steal his recipe for the sauce, buffalo wings would be a fuzzy memory in the American public eye. They are THAT good. It is presented as an appetizer, but there is enough in the serving to satisfy all but the most famished. It is served over a bed of shredded cabbage.

Really good food, great ambience and exceptional service - it is exactly what you are looking for in a dining experience and the quality of the food and fl avors are second to none.

The Riverfront Chill & Grill is located at 1401 Indian River Drive in Sebastian. They do provide carryout and can be reached at 772-589-0006.

Shop SmartIf you head into Black Friday sales without a strategy, two things are almost certain: You will overspend, and you won’t get the deals that brought you into the stores in the fi rst place. We put together some of the best Black Friday Shopping tips to help you prepare.

1. Check out the ads in the newspaper and online.

Your local Thanksgiving Day newspaper will be stuffed with ads, coupons and circulars. Many of these ads will be available online prior to Thanksgiving. Either way, these will be your main source to local Black Friday savings.

2. Make a list and a game plan.

Start by making a list of people to buy for, including the maxi-mum amount you plan to spend on each gift. Next, plan which stores you plan to visit and in which order.

Expert tip: Bring a friend or spouse. Two shoppers are better than one and can increase the odds that you’ll get everything on your list.

3. Use the Internet!

No crowds, no lines and stay in your pajamas! Many retailers are offering the same deals online as in-store. You can check out the sales ahead of time and log on from home to grab the good deals.

Expert tip: Order the item online and select in-store pickup. This will save you shopping time, shipping money and let you zip in and out of the store quickly.

4. Use your smartphone!

Shopping technology get better each year- and now, hundreds of applications are available to help you fi nd the best deals and make your shopping experience more plesant. Check out some of the Top Apps to download before you shop.

5. Look for Early Bird Discounts.

The Early Bird Shopper will be the real winner on Black Fri-day. Stores offer early-day shopper specials usually from 5 a.m. until 11 a.m. with a no “rain check” policy. That means once they run out of the products, you’re out of luck.

6. Bring the Ads with you.

If you saw an advertised special that really impressed you, bring the ad along to avoid any disputes over how much an item is supposed to cost on Friday. Having the ad also could come in handy at stores promising “lowest-price” guarantees – especially if you fi nd lower prices elsewhere.

7. Ask for gift receipts.

Gift receipts generally include a description of the item pur-chased but do not disclose the price paid. Including gift re-ceipts inside the gift box will make returns or exchanges easier for the gift recipient. Without proof-of-purchase, the recipient may be turned down for returning or exchanging the item or risk receiving an exchange for the current selling price of the item.

8. Stay safe at the stores.

Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you. If you see people “hanging around” parking garages, parking lots, or the outside of stores, avoid the area. Notify the police or security department.

If possible, shop before dark. Coordinate shopping trips with a friend if you plan to be out late. Always park your car in a well lit area.

Lock your car doors and windows even if you are only gone for a few minutes. Keep packages and other valuables out of public view, preferably locked in the trunk.

Park near street lights if possible and have your keys in hand when you return to your car. Always check the interior of your car before you unlock the door to get in.

To discourage purse snatchers, don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your purchases delivered whenever practical. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card whenever possible.

9. Keep your identity safe.

In stores, be vigilant against so-called shoulder-surfi ng -- someone near you who has a good view of your personal infor-mation to write down, memorize or capture with a cellphone camera. Should an employee request personal information, like your driver’s license or phone number, ask if you can opt out of sharing it. If not, relay the information quietly. When shopping online, good technology is key. Enabling a fi rewall and updating antivirus and antispyware software can keep data on your computer secure.

Stick to Your Diet During ThanksgivingWhether you love or dread the Thanksgiving holiday, one thing for sure is: it’s hard to stick to your diet. A plate (or two) heaped with turkey, gravy, buttery mashed potatoes and all the trimmings can blow any progress you’ve made.

There are many things you can do to stick to your diet and still enjoy a Thanksgiving meal — and believe me, sticking to plan or not overdoing it feels A LOT better than stuffi ng yourself silly.

Here are some “turkey day” tips to get you through Thanks-giving:

You know never to go food shopping on an empty stomach, right? The same applies to the holidays! Never sit down to a holiday meal on an empty stomach. Eat a high protein snack beforehand and drink water to alleviate the need to begin nib-bling before the meal starts — and to stop yourself from over-eating at the table.

If you’re invited over, bring along a tray of veggies and low fat dip (or another snack that fi ts your diet plan), so that you’ll have something healthy to snack on. If you simply MUST have Thanksgiving exactly the same without substituting any of the foods, then you need to make a conscious decision to limit how much you eat. Portion control is key here. Don’t overload your plate. A serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards; mashed potatoes (1/2 cup) about the size of 1/2 a baseball; use a spoon to measure out gravy instead of pouring it on. Go easy on the stuffi ng. Take a walk with family members or friends in between cours-es. If the weather permits, play a game of touch football in the backyard. Do I really need to tell you to stay away from soft drinks and alcohol? If you can’t resist those empty calories, instead go with diet soft drinks; alternate one alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink or, even better, water.

If You’re Doing the Cooking

Serve vegetables along with the Thanksgiving turkey. This is not only a healthy alternative to stuffi ng but can be served in many different ways. If serving a salad use low fat dressing. A delicious homemade vegetable soup can be prepared as a second course instead of pasta.

If you tend to go all out with different courses, limit the amount of courses you serve this year. It’ll not only save your guests’ waistline, but you’ll have more time to enjoy the holi-day meal with your guests instead of running around cooking. Make your mashed potatoes low fat by using low fat milk and less butter. You can also add in low fat sour cream to make it extra creamy. Instead of the array of desserts traditionally served every year, why not make an angel food cake and top it with berries and low fat whipped cream.

While these are just some tips to help you stick to your diet,

How To Earn Extra Xmas Money

Earn gift cards - If you’ve read my blog at all, you know I’m a big fan of Swagbucks. And you probably signed up a long time ago and have been earning gift cards ever since.

Swagbucks is a search engine that rewards you with Swagbucks for searching. You can use it just like Google (though I still like Google better) for searching and you will be randomly awarded Swagbucks for searching, usually around fi ve to 10 Swagbucks once or twice each day.

Here are some of my favorite ways to earn swagbucks:

1. Search. I use the Swagbucks search engine instead of Google to search topics on the internet. I usually win 8 - 10 swagbucks by searching and try to win at least twice a day.

2. Download the Swagbucks toolbar. I earn 1 easy swagbuck ev-ery day by logging in on the toolbar. Keeping the toolbar on my browser also makes it easy to search.

3. Daily Poll. Earn 1 swagbuck every day by answering the daily poll.

4. NOSO {No Obligation Special Offers}. Earn 2 swagbucks every day by viewing the NOSOs. **There are many free special offers here that will also earn additional swagbucks when they are com-pleted. Be sure to read all the requirements and follow the direc-tions in order to earn the swagbucks.

5. Special Offers. Click on the “more” tab and click on “free” to fi nd the offers that only require a signup or download in order to win swagbucks.

6. Birthday Bucks. If you have a birthday coming up, be sure to enter the date in your profi le and you will be sent 50 free swagbucks on your birthday!
