Visiting the Media Center

Opens: 7:00 a.m. Closes: 4:00 p.m. daily (3:30 Friday) Exception: Special Projects Before and after school- no pass needed During class – pass required Lunch – E-Z passes will be given upon

request (green form). Complete the form and use it all year for visits during lunch.

Media Center Policies

1. Students must follow school rules for food, drinks, and cell phones.

2. Keep conversations low. Avoid distracting others.

3. Ask for help when necessary. We want your visit to be successful.

Media Center Policies

4. Read all posted rules and directions. 5. Please leave your area neat and

orderly. Push chairs in and return books to the carts (not the shelves).

6. Remember to pick up your pass, if you arrived with one.

How Do I Check Out Books?

1. Locate your book/books in the media center.

2. Take the book/books to the circulation desk.

3. Tell your “NC WISE” number (6 digit number).

4. A date due slip will be placed in back of your book/books.

Circulation Policies

1. You are allowed to check out up to five (5) books at a time.

2. You may keep the books for two (2) weeks (10 school days).

3. You may renew books if you are not finished reading them. You must bring the book to “renew” it.

4. You can place a request or “hold” on a book that you would like to check out.

Overdue Policies 1. An overdue fine of 10¢ per day will be

charged for each late item. 2. Fines do not have to be paid when

turning in overdue materials, but must be cleared up before report cards come out each 9 weeks grading period

3. Students who owe more than 50¢ cannot check out or renew books.

Overdue Policies

4. Students who do not clear up their fines will have their check out privileges suspended.

5. Plan to visit the media center regularly to stay abreast of your reading, renewals and fines.

6. *No fine will be charged for inclement weather.

Reference Book Policies

Reference Materials (overnight) You are allowed to check out reference

materials (R –labeled) at the end of the school day only. Books are due back by 1st period on the next student day.

Fines for reference books are 50¢ per day. Students not returning reference materials

within 3 days will be referred to the office.

Lost/Damage Policies

1. Lost Books: If you lose a book you will be charged the amount it will cost to replace the book.

2.If you damage a book, you will have to pay damage fees.

Magazine Policies

Magazines/Periodicals: (approx. 50 titles) You may check out magazines at the end of

the day. You can keep them for 2 days.

Bring them back by 1st period on the due date Fines for overdue magazines are 50¢ per

day. Replacement cost for lost magazines is

$5.00.

Copying Policies

If you need to copy pages from any of the library’s materials, just ask the media staff to make you a FREE copy. Fill out a form at the desk with your name page information. Limit 5 free pages (10 counting back/front).

There is a charge of 10¢ per page for non-library materials. This includes college applications and class notes.

Computer Usage Policies Students using computers for school-

related research, word processing and PowerPoint have priority.

Inappropriate use can result in loss of Internet privileges.

Student email information will be provided. Grade level administrators will monitor.

Computer Printing Policies

If you print from the computers (Internet, word processing, etc.) for a school assignment, you get the first 5 sheets free (black/white) and pay only 5¢ a sheet for additional pages.

Color prints are 25¢ per page. Use wisely! You are responsible for everything you print,

so instead of printing an entire website, please use a Word document to copy and paste notes.

Computer Usage Policies

Students should avoid using Wikipedia for research!

Students should use NC WiseOwl as much as possible to conduct research. Many valuable sites have already been located for our North Carolina students.

Rules for the media center are posted by the computers.

Fiction Genres

Fiction books begin in the 5 low cabinets and continue to the adjacent library wall.

Check the genre chart as you browse the bookshelves. Books have sticker labels for fantasy, historical fiction, adventure, diversity, verse novels, suspense, horror, science fiction and romance.

Nonfiction Books

Nonfiction books are in the 5 tall cabinets. These books all have Dewey Decimal

numbers on the spine label. (398.2 HAM) Some of the titles may have “R” stickers or

“REF” spine label prefixes to indicate their status as reference (overnight) books.

Special Collections

Literary Criticism (in special cabinet,800s) Sets of books on literature and authors

Biographies (on the wall) A collection on famous people which will

have a “B” on the spine label.

Graphic novels (brown cabinet) Books written in a comic book format or

manga.

Short Stories (on the wall) A collection of individual stories.

Online catalog. “Title Peek” - shows the cover of the book

How do you login to the computer? User Name: Your last name +

Lunchroom/library number Password: Last 5 digits of your Social
