In registering convincing successes in the G3 Albertvon Metzler-Rennen over 10 furlongs at Frankfurt May 6 and G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen over a furlongfarther at Cologne June 10, Novellist could not havetaken better credentials into the July 1 G1 DeutschesDerby. Surprisingly workmanlike in the HamburgClassic, he managed to beat all racing closest to himbefore losing out overall to the isolated rail runnerPastorius (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), and there wasthe familiar sense of anticlimax that naturally occurswhen an unbeaten star surrenders that tag. Restrained in third early by Eduardo Pedroza racingkeenly off the moderate pace, he was shuffled back tosecond-to-last by the home turn. Asked to closepassing the three pole, the Andreas Wohler traineegained command in the center of the track a furlonglater and employed his stamina reserves to draw awayfrom chief danger Retrieve (Aus) (Rahy) on the run tothe line.

Despitebeing pushed along, he soon found himself at the backof the pack. Last but one while a dozen lengths behindas they passed in front of the stands for the first time,Gold Ship began to make eye-catching headway on theoutside as they raced down the backstretch andprogressed all the way to third with 600 metersremaining. He struck the front shortly after they madethe right-hand turn into the lane, and while fellowcloser Sky Dignity gave game chase, Gold Ship wasnever seriously threatened in the run to the wire.

DETTORI TO GO FREELANCE Frankie Dettori'slongstanding partnership with Godolphin has beenbrought to an end, it was announced yesterday. Astatement issued on the website of the racing operationof Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum read,AFrankie Dettori will not be retained by Godolphin nextyear, but he will continue to ride for the stable.@Dettori, whose 18-year spell in the royal blue beganwith a ride on the operation=s first Classic winnerBalanchine (Storm Bird) in 1994, has registered 110 pattern-race successes for the firm in total.Reflecting on the decision to close out the formalarrangement, Godolphin=s Racing Manager SimonCrisford said, AWe have had a tremendous associationwith Frankie over many years. He has achieved somuch on behalf of Godolphin and has made thedifference between winning and losing on so manyoccasions in the world=s biggest races. However,Frankie is looking for a fresh challenge, and we felt thatthe retainer was not really working, so this is the bestway forward. We have had many great days together, and we look forward to working with Frankie in thefuture and, hopefully, enjoying more success together. He remains a great friend--the difference next year willbe that he will not be our retained jockey and willoperate as a freelance instead.@ Dettori added, AI havehad 18 wonderful years. Godolphin has been a majorpart of everything I have achieved in racing, and I haveloved every minute of it. I feel the time has come for achange. My position in the stable has changed a littlebit, and I need a new challenge. Sheikh Mohammed hasbeen an unbelievable boss to me. He had theconfidence to take me on board when I was young, andwe smashed every record together. I will be forevergrateful to him for everything he has done for me andfor my family. The whole team have been fantastic--none of it would have been possible without them.@

I would like to point out a major error in Mr. JohnWilliams=s letter. Leslie Combs II did not bring Beau Pereand Alibhai to North America. These horses wereimported by California breeder and movie mogul LouisB. Mayer.

Beau Pere was an established sire in New Zealandand Australia when Mayer bought him to stand at hisCalifornia stock farm. Some years later, when Mayerwas dispersing his stock, he sold the aged stallion toCombs, who moved him to Kentucky; the relocationproved to be too much for Beau Pere and he diedbefore he could cover a mare in Kentucky. All of BeauPere's influential stock was produced in California. Alibhai was imported by Mayer to be a racehorse, butafter he worked a mile in 1:36 and came back withbowed tendons in both forelegs (stories don't agree onwhy--that he got away from the rider is one theory),the unraced colt became a stallion in the Mayer barn.At the time of Mayer's dispersal, Combs put together asyndicate to purchase Alibhai as a proven stallion fromMayer for an eye-popping $500K; his transfer toKentucky ended better than Beau Pere's and Alibhaiwent on to greater sire glory. And although Royal Charger stood at Combs' farmfrom the beginning of his U.S. career, he waspurchased in Ireland by Neil McCarthy, who had beenMayer's adviser on breeding matters. McCarthy alsoimported the outstanding Australian racehorse ShannonII to race in California and upon his retirement, sent himto Combs=s farm for stud. Mr. Combs did not importany of these horses--his contribution was standing andsupporting them. Kindly give the credit to those towhom it is due.

AThe reality is the sale is having more successbecause consignors are bringing us a better horse,@ saidFasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning, Jr. AAslong as people bring a quality product, you=ll havesuccess with sales graduates.@ That success helped drive growth last term, whengross surged 81.4% to $17,046,800. Fasig-Tipton=s Boyd Browning, Jr. on the yearlingmarket in 2012: AI think both buyers and sellers feel it=s been difficult, which probably means it=s a more fair marketplace. It=snot easy to buy a good horse, and it=s damn sure noteasy to sell a horse who isn=t perceived as good. Buyerscontinue to be selective, but the diminution of thenumber of horses produced has certainly broughtsupply and demand more in synch.@

WinStar=s Elliott Walden on finding prospects atFTKOCT: "This sale's a little different. Some of their hair coatsare starting to turn, and horses don't look quite asshiny as they do in September. But they're also biggerand stronger. So there's a nice blend in trying to putthat puzzle together and finding a nice horse. Pinhookers have been making a lot of money offthese horses for a long time, and now I think you'restarting to see more end-users here, too. For a sale theyalmost gave up on a few years ago, it's really gainedmomentum. A big part of that is in the results. Whenyou see a Spring in the Air or a Willly Beamin, who wonthe GI King's Bishop, you know there are good horsesin the sale, and I think pinhookers have known that fora while.@
