Factor Back... The Factor broke his maiden by 8 1/4 lengths with agaudy 108 Beyer Figure on this card a year ago, andfollowed it up with a track-and-trip victory in the GII San Vicente S. in February. He showed the ability tocarry his plentiful speed over a route of ground whengrabbing Oaklawn=s 1 1/16-mile Rebel S. Mar. 19 by 6 1/4 lengths from champion 3-year-old male contenderCaleb=s Posse (Posse), but was a no-show seventh inthe GI Arkansas Derby at odds-on a month later. Baffertopted to play it safe with his star and bypass the TripleCrown races, and the roan rewarded him with a victoryover elders in Del Mar=s GI Pat O=Brien S. Aug. 28.Backed down to a justified 2-5 in the GI Ancient Title S.here Oct. 8, the speedster was used up battlingthrough a :43.80 half-mile, and faded to fourth. He waspart of a similarly hot pace last time in the GI Breeders=Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs Nov. 5, and could dono better than eighth. Out of the box like a shot from his far outside post,The Factor was unhurried by Martin Garcia, conceding

the early edge to a headstrongCentralintelligence (Smarty Jones). The Factor soon grew restless, however, and he ranged up three-wide to contest an opening quarter in:22.61 with stablemateHoorayforhollywood (Storm Cat) alsoin hot pursuit. Centralintelligencebegan throwing his head about insideapproaching the half, and quicklydropped back to last after bothering

Hoorayforhollywood, giving The Factor a clear lead ofabout a length and a half turning for home. Rothko, who also encountered a bit of trouble during theincident with Centralintelligence, appeared in with achance to run down The Factor in the lane, but hischallenge was quickly dismissed and the favorite washome free. Associate came from last to grab a piece.Centralintelligence was eased out of the race, but didnot appear to be injured. The Factor=s winning time of1:19.89 was .19 seconds off the track record set byTwirling Candy in last year=s Malibu.

AIt=s exciting to win the Malibu,@ said Baffert. AIt=s agreat race, some great horses have won it, some greattrainers. It was lacking on my resume. I can put it onmy website tonight.@ He continued, AThe Factor, youcould tell he was just kicking in gear at the end there. When The Factor runs his race, it=s going to be tough toreally beat him. The Factor we know showed up today.@ Winning rider Garcia offered, AI decided to let him runand put me wherever he wanted to put me, and look atwhat he did. I didn=twant to go to the railtoday. I wanted tostay a little bit off andif somebody wanted togo, I just let them goand stayed outside. Idon=t think there was ahorse that could beathim today, he wasreally sharp.@ Trainer SteveAsmussen, who alsosaddled eighth-placefinisher Wine Police(Speightstown) andninth-place finisherLight Up the Score (Even The Score), was pleased withRothko=s runner-up showing in his first stakes try. AIwish it could have been a little smoother for him aroundthe turn, but he ran a good race. I=m very pleased withwho he is,@ said Asmussen. A crowd of 44,579 were on hand for Santa Anita=straditional opening day card--the most since 1994.

Ofevre Beats Elders cont... The even-money choice facing a field that includedreigning Horse of the Year Buena Vista (Jpn) (SpecialWeek {Jpn}) and last year=s winner Victoire Pisa (Jpn)(Neo Universe {Jpn}), Orfevre hadn=t raced since hishistoric score in the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St.Leger) at Kyoto Oct. 23. Away from post nine underIkezoe, the chestnut relaxed under cover toward theback of pack, some 10 lengths off Earnestly (Jpn)(Grass Wonder)=s early pace. They continued throughan easy gallop as Victoire Pisa and Buena Vista trackedin second and third, respectively, before the pacequickened on the final turn. Orfevre, produced on theoutside in upper stretch, still had five lengths to makeup, but lowered his head determinedly and ate upground with each stride. He finally hit the front in thefinal 200 meters and outfought a dead-game EishinFlash (Jpn) (King=s Best) and the running-on To TheGlory (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) to the wire. Thewin margin was 3/4 lengths, with another neck back tothird. Earnestly, in the mix until mid-stretch, faltered tobe 10th, while Buena Vista came home a one-pacedseventh, one spot ahead of Victoire Pisa.

Historic Campaign... Orfevre finished second and then third in consecutiveGroup 3 events last January and February, but hasn=tbeen bettered since taking the 1800-meter G2 SpringS. at Hanshin in late March. The real story of his 2011campaign began on Apr. 24 at Tokyo Racecourse, when he stretched out to win the 2000-meter G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) by threelengths. In a race originally scheduled for Nakayama, but moved because of the massive earthquake andtsunami that devastated the region, Orfevre was arelative outsider at 9-1, but he soon proved the Classicwin was no fluke. A little over a month later, hereturned to Tokyo to take the May 29 G1 TokyoYushun (Japanese Derby) by 1 3/4 lengths, this time asthe 2-1 favorite. Given the summer off, Orfevre madehis return in the 2400-meter G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai atHanshin Sept. 25, and promptly won by 2 1/2 lengthsas the odds-on choice. The win set him up perfectly forhis attempt at Japan=s Triple Crown in G1 Kikuka Sho(Japanese St. Leger) over 3000 meters at Kyoto Oct. 23, and Orfevre was once again at his best, putting in his customary powerful late run to win goingaway.

The Age Old Question... With Orfevre=s dominance over his fellow sophomoresbeyond question, trainer Yasutoshi Ikee opted to passon an initial attempt at older horses in the G1 JapanCup Nov. 27--a race won by Buena Vista--and insteadpoint toward the end-of-season Arima Kinen. ADuringthe short break he was given after winning the KikukaSho, he was able to loosen up and relax,@ said Ikee.AHis conditioning went smoothly after returning to theRitto Training Center, and everything went well up tothis race. He lost some weight when he arrived here, but I lost all doubts after seeing how he was with myown eyes.@ Ikee, who also saddled third-placed To The Glory andfifth-placed Tosen Jordan (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) inthe Arima Kinen, was securing a landmark win aftersaddling Orfevre=s full-brother Dream Journey (Jpn) tovictory in the 2009 renewal. Dream Journey, who twoyears earlier was crowned champion 2-year-old colt, was named that season=s champion older male. Theybecame the first siblings to win the race, and Orfevre isnow just the third 3-year-old to claim the event.Meanwhile, it was Ikee=s fifth Group 1 title of theyear--in addition to Orfevre=s four, he notched the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) with Tosen Jordan--which tiesthe JRA record. AHe was off slow and traveled on the rail, but thejockey was able to steer him out in the backstretch, and I knew then that he would get the job done,@ Ikeesaid of the running. AAs I=ve said before, we are aimingfor the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, but are alsoexamining the possibilities of racing him in Dubai inMarch.@ Cont. p5

Mr. Commons was an impressive second-out winnerdown the hill here in January, and reported home thirdin the GI Santa Anita Derby Apr. 9 after a main-trackallowance tally in late February. His graded stakesearnings weren=t enough to get the big bay into the GI Kentucky Derby, and he was eighth in the GI Preakness S. May 21. Mr. Commons hit the benchafter that, but returned over the sod in style to annexDel Mar=s Oceanside S. July 20. He came up just anose short against accomplished veteran Caracortado(Cat Dreams) in the GII Del Mar Mile H. Aug. 27, andfilled the same slot when 3/4 of a length behindJeranimo (Congaree) in the Oct. 8GII Oak Tree Mile over this trackand trip. Mr. Commons was fifthwith an eventful trip in the GIBreeders= Cup Mile last time Nov. 5. Content to bide his time fromsecond-to-last as Comma to theTop (Bwana Charlie) postedimpossible splits of :22.75, :45.75and 1:09.14, Mr. Commons movedup with ease in between horsesand in striking distance at the headof the lane. After a few tensemoments, he swerved in slightlyand rushed through a hole between the tiringfrontrunner on the rail and Ultimate Eagle in the threepath. At that point, the only question was margin ofvictory. AIt was good to have Mike Smith back in the saddlelike that,@ offered trainer John Shirreffs. AWhateverMike wants to do, I=m just fine with that. It=s better tohave a win on opening day than to have your first oneon closing day. [Mr. Commons] recovers very well andhas been training forwardly all along.@ St George Farm is the nom de course of Ian Banwell,a former Bank of America exective and founder ofNorth Carolina-based Round Table InvestmentManagement Company. Last Time I Thought, `I Love Being A Jockey!’:Every day, but particularly this year at the Breeders’ Cup. I rode Pure Gossip for Phil Serpe in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs. It was such an amazing experience. There were thousands of fans and a worldwide t.v. audience. I was somewhat nervous in the jockeys’ room, but when I got out on the the track, I felt great. There was no pressure at all. I just tried to enjoy the big event, and I did so, and it was fun. It is every jockey’s dream to ride the Breeders’ Cup and I was there as an apprentice.

Last Time I Cried At AMovie: I never cry. I only laugh.

Last Great New York Moment:  I won four races in a row at Aqueduct December 5. It was a great surprise, and ironic because, coming over to the U.S. on the plane, I was a little bit worried that the move was going to be too much. LOL!

Last Time I Saw My Family:In March last year, I was in France for my visa. I surprised my grandmother with a visit. She was sooo happy.

Last Time I Had a Great French Meal:Last week at Bistro Bisou in Florida, where I usually eat. The owners are French. I had sole française with mashed potatoes and tomatoes and mozzarella that came from Madrin, Spain.

Just over a year ago, Ryan Curatolo had ridden in two races and had finished last in each. Frustrated with the pace of his career (the mounts came six months apart), the native of Marseille, France packed his bags, headed to Miami, taught himself English by watching television, and voilà! The 19-year-old now has $3.5 million in U.S. earnings, is one of the leading riders in New York, and figures to feature prominently in the Eclipse race for top apprentice. Oo là là là. C’est magnifique.

Who’s Number One? Ryan Curatolo is hoping Eclipse voters think it’s him.

Click for the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree. The Canadian-born trainer Michelle Nihei got herBoxing Day present in the form of two winners onyesterday's card at Gulfstream. The 2-year-old fillyDonnatale (Tale of the Cat), a homebred for SusanAtkin's CASA Farms I, kickedthings off with a stylishthree-length tally facing maidenspecial foes in the day=s thirdrace. In the fifth, theNihei-trained Woodford Belle(Arch), a 4-year-old miss makingher U.S. bow off a long break, rallied from second last to win agrassy optional claimer. The pair caught bettors a bitoff guard--they went off at 8-1and 7-1, respectively--but Niheiwasn=t among the surprised. AI had Donnatale up inSaratoga earlier in the year, and I fully expected to beable to make a start with her there, but we just hit acouple bumps in the road," Nihei said yesterday at theconclusion of racing. "It was just typical 2-year-oldstuff. But Susan, who also owns [GISW] Prince Will IAm (Arch), is so wonderfully patient with her horsesthat it gave us the chance to step back and take ourtime. Once we got her on the right road, she never tooka bad step. Every single time I asked her to dosomething, she did it the right way. If you were writinga book on how to train a horse, you'd give her schedule." Since being sidelined from serious training atSaratoga in mid-July, Donnatale had only six publishedworks, her last a modest five-furlong drill from the gatein 1:02 flat. The tab may not have revealed much, butNihei knew her filly was primed for a big effort. AShehad a huge foundation under her--I've had her intraining since February--so I knew where she wasfitness-wise,@ she said. AI really did expect good thingsfrom her today.@ Nihei said the next obvious step would be a first-levelallowance, but left the door open for a possible crack atstakes company. AI=m going to keep all my optionsopen,@ said Nihei. AThat=s sort of an obvious way to go,but with an early 3-year-old, who knows? Johnny Veven got off her and said, >I love her!= And the moredistance the better with this one. She=s like driving acar--she loves to relax, she=ll do whatever you want herto, she=s brave, and she=s not flustered by anything. She=s a Classic-distance horse in the making, I think.@Cont. p2

Woodford Belle had a much different profile witheight starts under her belt, though she hadn=t faced thestarter since running third in a Kempton Polytrackhandicap last August. AShe was in Europe, and she hadsome sorting out to do when she got here, but luckilyfor me, she had a good bottom, and we were able tofind her the right spot,@ said Nihei. AWithin the firstcouple of days of training her, I knew that Edgar Pradowas going to be the guy to ride her. Really. Task Force Recommendations For Retired Racehorses: The New York State Task Force on RetiredRacehorses has recommended New York=s tracks andResorts World Casino New York City to collectivelydedicate at least one-half of one percent ofcommissions from video lottery gaming revenue toracehorse retirement efforts.
