LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Reason for concern about chlorineIn her Letter to the Editor (6/12/12),
Janet Ruah raised concerns about the useof chlorine based chemicals for the treat-ment of swimming pools. Her concernswere related to breathing problems at theEvents Centre pools.
She also raised questions about pos-sible carcinogenic material in the poolenvironment.
Pool treatment is a specialised subjectbut I believe her concerns are not withoutsubstance.
From the www.aquamagazine.comwebsite Scott Webb says ‘Breakpointchlorination techniques are really onlyeffective against inorganic, ammonia-based chloramines. They do not impact theorganic chloramines present in all poolwater. In fact, they create new worrisomeissues by forming rather nasty disinfec-tion byproducts (DBPs), some of which goairborne and cause well-documented prob-lems in the lungs of frequent swimmersand children. (There is a rising chorus ofconcern in the health community aboutthis issue. There are studies that correlate
DBPs with the onset of asthma in chil-dren.)
At Wikipedia there is discussion aboutthe uses of chloramines to treat swimmingpools.
It noted that in the USA the level ofmonochloramine is regulated in drinkingwater because of the tendency to convertorganic materials into carcinogens suchas chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.Monochloramine is also used in pooltreatments.
At the Te Awamutu Events Centre thechildren’s pool is combined with the mainpool.
If the children’s pool is contaminatedthe whole pool is effected and closed whilethe pool is treated.
While it is inevitable that accidents willoccur with young children, it seemssensible to separate the pools to minimisethe impact.
This would also improve the basicsafety by physically keeping children outof the adult swimming area.
I have often experienced breathing
problems myself after swimming at the TeAwamutu pool. As an asthmatic I have hadthis problem for a long time but I havenoticed that some pools affect me morethan others.
In particular I do not seem to be affectedgreatly by the Melville pool which uses UVtreatment as well as the usual ‘chlorina-tion’ methods.
The use of UV is known to considerablyreduce the level of chlorination required.
I was concerned by the lack of responseby H2O to Janet Ruah’s letter, althoughsome of the issues relate to the design ofthe pool rather that the management.
The response by Waipa District Coun-cil, the custodians of the Events Centre, did not adequately address the issuesraised.
I would like to see a thorough investi-gation into the water treatment methodsincluding an analysis of air purity todetermine how our pool shapes up interms of modern pool hygiene and treat-ment methods.

Should Walk of Fame be Walk of Shame? On a recent visit to family in
Te Awamutu I came across abeautifully designed memorial, but which can unfortunately onlybe described as deeply sexist.
Opposite Saint John’s Churchon Arawata Street you’ll find theTe Awamutu Walk of Fame, erected in 2009.
As a history teacher I relishthe opportunity to engage withmemorials like this in the way a
historian would.Applying some critical think-
ing to decode a memorial can befun and quite hard, but for thisone, many of my Year 9 studentswould be able to spot the prob-lems.
The memorial claims to be for‘those who have contributed tothe growth and development ofTe Awamutu’ — yet out of 21people memorialised, only one
woman, Paddy Stephens, isdeemed to have made a contri-bution to the town.
I find this hard to believe.Paddy appears with her hus-
band, Pat Stephens (no woman, apparently, deserves her ownspace at this memorial). Citizensof Te Awamutu what otherwomen deserve to be recognisedat your Walk of Fame?
Do you also need a Walk of
Shame?Perhaps this could exist at the
opposite end of the park.Who would you put on that, or
is the past only something to becelebrated?
Can I suggest the committeeresponsible for the Walk of Fameas potential candidates for afuture Walk of Shame?

Report backs council’s financial planWaipa District Council has
welcomed the Auditor General’sreport on matters arising from the2012-22 local authority long termplans.
The report was released inDecember and found that ‘‘overalllocal authorities are planning tolive within their means, and theyare not raising rates to unreason-able levels’’.
Auditor General Lyn Provostsaid that while some councilswere planning to raise more debt‘‘net income always stays positiveand local authorities stay wellwithin the golden rule of fiscalpolicy that governments shouldonly borrow to invest’’.
Waipa Mayor Alan Livingstonsaid the report countered criti-cism earlier in the year by somewho alleged the council’s spend-ing was out of control.
‘‘Our planned average rateincrease over the 10-year period is4.1 per cent compared to a sectoraverage of 4.3 per cent,’’ said Mr
Livingston.‘‘We are also in the fortunate
position of having one of thelowest public debt per capitaratios for local authorities in theWaikato,’’ he said.
‘‘Our ratepayers can take heartthat our council is in a soundfinancial position and ourplanned rates increases are wellwithin what the Auditor Generalconsiders acceptable.’’
The council is working on itsAnnual Plan for the 2013/14 yearwhich would start the financialyear with a debt of $28 million.
This worked out to a debt percapita ratio of around $686 perperson, much less than the major-ity of other councils in the Wai-kato region.
‘‘While our debt is set toincrease during the next 10 years, this is due to a large investment ininfrastructure that will put us inthe best position in terms ofdelivering on the levels of servicethat our communities have come
to expect, and to cater for forecastgrowth,’’ said Mr Livingston.
‘‘It is about planning for ourfuture and limiting the burdenplaced on ratepayers of todaywhile still ensuring that there isadequate ability to provide for theratepayers of the future.
‘‘Without taking this approachwe would be doing nothing morethan delaying the inevitable andfuture councils would find them-selves trying to defend large ratesincreases for investing in emer-gency works brought on by a lackof foresight and planning,’’ hesaid.
The Annual Plan would bereleased for public feedback inMarch and comments would beinvited on a number of issuesincluding those raised by theamendments to the Local Govern-ment Act.
‘‘We encourage people to takepart in this process. It is import-ant that people have their say,’’Mr Livingston said.
Hats offto agreatyear!

Letting guard downinvites criminals in
Te Awamutu Police weregenerally pleased with thebuild-up to this year’sChristmas/New Yearperiod, although alcoholand violence were thespoilers in the days beforeChristmas.
Police say the stress ofthe holiday period, combined with too muchalcohol, seemed to be afactor in a number ofcallouts to domestic vio-lence incidents and generaldisorder.
The spoiler in the NewYear has been thefts andburglaries — and it seems acommon thread is people
letting down their guard.Acting Te Awamutu
Senior Sergeant GaelMockford says a number ofthe dishonesty-relatedcomplaints seem to beopportunistic as peopleleave houses, garages andsheds insecure and con-tinue to display valuableitems left in cars — thesetoo sometimes not beinglocked.
She says police havegiven the same messagenumerous times — eitherdon’t leave valuables incars, or hide them — andmake sure the car is locked.
Simple burglary preven-
tion measures include notleaving packaging of valu-able items out in view, using timers to turn lightsor radios off and on, arrang-ing mail and papers to bestopped or collected, hidingvaluables and spare keysand not advertising onanswer phones or socialmedia that you are away.
Locking up, includingclosing windows even in theheat of summer, is vitalwhen leaving the house.
Another simple measureis to talk to neighbours andkeep an eye on each other’splaces. Always report any-thing suspicious.
Bridge to close for workCambridge’s high-level Vic-
toria bridge will be closed tovehicles this weekend to allowthe deck to be resurfaced.
Waipa District Council hasengaged contracting firmDowner to undertake the workbetween the hours of 6pm onFriday and 6am on Monday.
Road corridor manager DawnInglis said that while the bridgewould be closed to vehiculartraffic, pedestrians and cyclistswould be accommodated wherepossible.
‘‘We recognise this is animportant link betweenLeamington and Cambridge andhave attempted to undertake theworks at a time that will causethe least disruption to the com-
munity,’’ said Ms Inglis.‘‘The type of bitumen being
used to resurface the bridgeneeds to be applied at optimaltemperatures that are achievedduring the day and the end resultwill be a much smoother surfacefor vehicles,’’ she said.
The bridge’s handrail will alsobe cleaned while the traffic con-trol and detours will be in placeduring this period.
If wet, the work will bepostponed until the followingweekend.
Updates will be posted on thecouncil websitewww.waipadc.govt.nz and on itsFacebook pagewww.facebook.com/WaipaDistrictCouncil.

Al, Trusa ready for relay
TC090113SP05A
ALTRUSA Te Awamutu bookworms, Al (Leanne Milligan) and Trusa(Janne Natrass), hit the track with Altrusa members Helen Appleby andChristine Melville at Relay For Life.
Te Awamutu’s Leanne Milliganhas been bitten by the Relay For Lifebug and her commitment to thisfantastic fundraising and awarenessevent is increasing every year.
Relay For Life is a fun, overnightevent which raises funds and aware-ness for the Waikato/Bay of PlentyCancer Society.
It involves teams of ten or morewalking or running around a trackfor 22 hours — though only onemember needs to be on the track atany one time.
Ms Milligan first became involvedwith Relay For Life in 2005, when afellow Altrusa member, who hadcancer entered a team and Altrusa TeAwamutu sponsored them.
The following year Altrusadecided to enter their own team.
This year’s event will be AltrusaTe Awamutu’s eighth Relay and thefirst for Ms Milligan as team captain.
She has also taken it up a notch byjoining the Relay For Life organisingcommittee.
‘‘Cancer is something that affectseveryone in some way. I lost agrandfather and an uncle to cancer aswell as having two aunts and abrother go through treatment.
‘‘Relay For Life is such a fun eventand with 2013 being the tenth anni-versary of Relay in Hamilton, Iwanted to help recognise this andmake it a great, celebratory event.
‘‘We’re hoping for a sunny week-end so the Altrusa bookwormmascots, Al and Trusa, can join in thecelebrations.
‘‘The 2013 Relay is shaping up tobe the ultimate event with all theaspects that makes Relay so special, plus a few surprises.’’
Teams of all shapes and sizescome from across the Waikato toparticipate.
Add to this plenty of entertain-ment, including bands, performersand competitions, overnight camp-ing, some amazing costumes and itbecomes an awesome event to attend.
‘‘There’s such a great atmosphereand it’s a lot of fun. I really enjoy thewhole weekend.’’
But there is more to Relay For Lifethan a great weekend of family fun.
Relay is about celebrating withthose who have overcome cancer, remembering loved ones lost to can-cer, and fighting back against adisease which affects one in threeNew Zealanders by fundraising forthe Cancer Society.
According to Ms Milligan, themost important thing about Relay isthat it is a team event.
‘‘It’s about supporting each other;you don’t have to stay for the whole22 hours.
‘‘This year our team is takingshifts and heading home to sleep. Wetell people, if you have one hour togive we’ll take it, if you have twohours we’ll take it, if you have threewe’ll take that as well!’’

SCENES from a previous Parachute Festival.
Mystery Creek EventsCentre will continue to rockto the beat of the ParachuteMusic Festival following thesigning of a five-year con-tract.
Parachute organisers havebeen working with the Mys-tery Creek Events Centreteam to ensure that one of thelargest music festivals in theSouthern Hemisphere cancontinue to be held at MysteryCreek.
The popular Christianmusic festival is held everyyear over Auckland Anni-versary Weekend and attractsthousands of spectators withheadlining international andlocal bands.
The drug- and alcohol-freeevent drew 20,000 visitorslast year with many choos-ing to stay onsite for theultimate festival experience.
This year will mark the10th year the ParachuteMusic Festival has been heldat Mystery Creek EventsCentre.
‘‘We’ve looked at how wecan create a new businessmodel that gives flexibilityand scope to meet both ourneeds, and recognises thestrength of our 10-yearrelationship,’’ says JonCalder, Mystery Creek Theevents centre’s 115 hectaresprovide an excellent venuefor large, multi-day events; it
is the only events centre inNew Zealand that can accom-modate 30,000 campers withshowers, flushing toilets andall necessary amenities toreside onsite.
Sonya Anderson, theevents centre’s corporateand private events manager, says, ‘‘Mystery Creek EventsCentre’s space, facilities andinfrastructure set it apartfrom many other venues andthe site naturally lends itselfto music-based campingevents.
‘‘It is the ideal venue forthe Parachute Music Fest-ival.’’
Parachute Music Festivalhas come a long way since itsmodest beginnings in 1989.
The first festival was heldin Waikanae in 1992 andmoved to Totara Springs in1995.
In 2004 , Parachuterelocated to Mystery Creekand has grown to now be thelargest Christian music fest-ival in the Southern Hemi-sphere.
Improvements are con-stantly being made to theevent and impressive newfeatures include integratedtechnology in the festival’sTag wristbands; these can be
preloaded with credit andwill alleviate the need tocarry cash onsite.
Tickets for Parachute(January 25-27) have beenreleased and are selling instaged tiers with the first twotiers now sold out.

Waipa Golf Classic backafter three decades
TC090113CT02
FORMER Waipa Golf Classic winner Stuart Reid of Ngahinapouri is alikely starter in the 2013 event.
BY COLIN THORSEN
A group of dedicated players areresurrecting the Waipa Golf Classiclast held over three decades ago.
The 2013 Mitre 10 Mega sponsoredtournament will be held at Annivers-ary Weekend, January 26-28.
Organising spokesperson, MelBrown says those entering willcontest rounds on three golf courses(Pirongia, Te Awamutu, StewartAlexander) in three days.
‘‘We are hoping to attract at least50 players from each of the three hostclubs — there is $15,000 of prizes tobe won.’’
Registrations close on January14.
Online registration is now avail-able at www.waipagolfclassic.co.nz
Entry forms are also available atall host clubs.
The Waipa Classic was originallycontested between Stewart Alexan-der and Te Awamutu golf clubs atLabour Weekend from 1973/74 to1980.
The two committees wanted topromote Waipa and utilise their bestassets — the golf courses.
Roy Bird convened a committee, including vice-captains, clubcaptains and golf club presidents.
At its peak, there were 270starters in the Classic — 135 playerson each course.
Prospective players were beingshortlisted or declined because of thesize of the field.
Brown says the event attractedparticipants from the Far North toTaranaki, along with Wellington andSouthland.
Te Awamutu’s Joe Tolich (91) wasone of the founding members of theconcept. He says it was the bestamateur tournament of its kind inthat era.
‘‘I’m thrilled that it’s going to beheld again after all those years andthat Pirongia is being included.’’
Tolich recalls Craik Motors beingthe major sponsor from 1975 to 1980,with the likes of himself, TrevorFleming, Trevor Morrison, HenryHolden, Terry Tricker and GavinHollinshead being on the committee.
The event appealed because of thetwo differing courses on display.
Te Awamutu being a luxuriouspark-like design and Stewart Alex-ander, at the time, being one of thelongest golf courses in the southernhemisphere.
A high quality field contested thesenior men’s division.
Manukau’s R. J. Carr held thetitle for a couple of years untilNgahinapouri’s incomparableStuart Reid lifted the much sort afterPrudential Cup.
Stewart Alexander’s B.J Clarke
won the intermediate division theyear Reid triumphed.
It was not only a high-qualitysporting fixture but a very sociableone.
Added to the mix was a team’sevent and a calcutta which was akeen attraction in those days.
Brown says the inclusion ofPirongia Golf Club completes a trulycomprehensive Waipa golfing event.
‘‘Waikato Golf Association, plus anumber of local businesses and thenationally recognised NZ Golf Maga-zine have put their hands up insupport of the idea, along with ourlocal government (Waipa DistrictCouncil).
‘‘This is truly a godsend for anyorganising committee trying torestore an event of this nature.’’

Golden run for localrace horse trainersBy PHILLIP QUAYin association with Brown Pennell
TC090113CT03
KEITH HAWTIN
The Group 2 Rich HillMile win by Miss Pelear atEllerslie on New Year’s Daycapped a golden holidayracing period for Te Awa-mutu trainers Keith andBrendon Hawtin.
The Hawtins also landeda two-year-old double dur-ing the Ellerslie carnival.
To add icing on the cake, they also produced a win-ner at the Rotorua meetingon Monday.
But it was Miss Pelear, amare by Linwood Park sireMr Nancho, which pro-vided the biggest highlight.
Miss Pelear had shownplenty of promise in hercareer but undoubtedly theRich Hill Mile was herbiggest test to date.
She handled the taskadmirably, romping homefor a very stylish win.
Two runs earlier MissPelear was narrowly beatenin the Group 2 AucklandThoroughbred Breeders’Stakes at Pukekohe andwas then eighth in theGroup 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes atTe Rapa.
From a wide draw, shecovered extra ground butwas always travelling com-fortably for jockey NoelHarris and let downstrongly in the homestraight. It was her fifth winand she beat home Full OfSpirit who was a half-headaway in second placing.
‘‘She’s a good mare who
had no luck last time out,’’says Keith Hawtin.
‘‘She’s done a good joband will go out for a coupleof weeks, then come backfor the New ZealandThoroughbred Breeders’Stakes at Te Aroha.
‘‘I said to Noel to try andslot her in fifth or sixth andhe ended up four wide withcover. But he always lookedlike he had a handful ofhorse and it was a goodride.’’
Hawtin revealed anambitious plan for promis-ing two-year-old Shebangafter her stylish debut winat Ellerslie over the Christ-mas carnival.
‘‘We have taken our timewith her but alwaysthought she would turn outsomething special. That’swhy she could now go on torun at Trentham in Janu-ary in the (Group 2)Wakefield ChallengeStakes.
‘‘We know that will be amajor step up in class fromhere but we are going togive it plenty of thought.’’
Hawtin, who trains inpartnership with his sonBrendon, says that he was alittle surprised thatShebang had been success-ful.
‘‘She still has a lot tolearn and did plenty wrongin [the Ellserslie] race. Wethought that if she got inthe first four or five homewe would be happy enough.
‘‘She is going to take a lotof lessons from this raceand will improve sig-nificantly.’’
Shebang had won a trialat Cambridge on December11, then had a jump-out onher home track before head-ing into yesterday’s 1200mrace in which she was rid-den by Matt Cameron.
The Le Bec Fin filly israced by her breeder, PaulGuise, of Te Kuiti.
‘‘He has raced horseswith us for four or fiveyears and is a very support-ive owner,’’ says Hawtin.
The Hawtins enjoyed atwo-year-old double at theEllerslie carnival withDevour also winning ajuvenile assignment onBoxing Day. Code Duellowas second home ahead ofSecret Agent and LuckyFeather.
The stable’s win at Roto-rua came with three-year-old filly, Our Sacred Annawith Te Awamutu jockeyMark Sweeney.
