PROGRAM NOTES

Fanfare for St. Cecilia ............................................Philip Sparke (b. 1951)London-born Philip Sparke studied composition, trumpet and piano at theRoyal College of Music and began actively pursuing composition as a resultof playing in the RCM wind band and brass band. Following severalsuccessful commission, his music gained attention and he is now one ofthe most productive of the new British composers. He has composedworks for every major American military band and the most renownedwind ensembles and brass bands in the world and his music has been wonnumerous prestigious competitions. This fanfare was commissioned tocelebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Harmonieverein Cäcilia ofHerzogenrath, Germany. It opens with a majestic brass themeaccompanied by florid woodwind lines that flow into a gentle lyrical middlesection and is the perfect entrance into the world of music found in theBritish Isles.

“Dundonnell” from Hymn of the Highlands .............................Philip SparkeSparke’s monumental seven-movement suite for brass band, Hymn of theHighlands, closes with this fine setting reminiscent of the regal Scottishpiping tune Highland Cathedral. Composed by two German musicians in1982 for a European Highlands Games, the lyrics speak eloquently of thelove of the Scots for their land:

“There is a land far from this distant shore,Where heather grows and Highland Eagles soar.

There is a land that will live ever moreDeep in my heart, my Bonnie Scotland.”

Mannin Veen ....................................................Haydn Wood (1882-1959)Mannin Veen is Gaelic for “Dear Isle of Man” and was originally written fororchestra in 1933. The work embodies Wood’s unique ability to meldfolksong material into a cohesive, single-movement work. This tone poemis based on four Manx folk songs that include a traditional air, “The GoodOld Way;” “The Manx Fiddler,” a Scottish or Gaelic reel much like anAmerican hoedown; a summoning song, “Sweet Water in Common,” set asa ballad; and an old Methodist hymn, “The Harvest of the Sea,” sung byfishermen after their safe return to port. This work beautifully representsthe picturesque Isle of Man, located in the Irish sea between England andIreland, where Wood lived as a youth. James R. O’Dell

British Eighth ...........................................................Zo Elliot (1882-1959)Perhaps the exemplar of the British march, British Eighth was written as atribute to General Bernard Montgomery and the Eighth Army after their

triumphant sweep across Northern Africa in 1942 in the middle of WorldWar II. British Eighth is widely performed on both sides of the Atlantic.Interestingly, Alonso [Zo] Elliot was born in Manchester, New Hampshireand educated in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and in Cambridge, England.

English Folk Song Suite .....................Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)Ralph Vaughan Williams is perhaps THE eminent British composer of the20th Century. His 1923 English Folk Song Suite, a masterwork compositionof wind band literature and the composer’s first work for band, was writtento provide “an agreeable and salutary experience for Bandsmen.” Withinthree short movements, Vaughan Williams wove eight British folk tunesinto the musical fabric and provided the performers with opportunities forexpressive solo playing as well as connecting British bands to their folksong heritage. This wonderful work has been performed by ensemblesranging from middle school bands to “The President’s Own” United StatesMarine Band! Tonight, the combined bands will open their section of theprogram with the first movement, featuring the songs “Seventeen ComeSunday” and “Pretty Caroline”.

Irish Tune from County Derry .........................Percy Grainger (1882-1961)Called by some “the most beautiful melody ever written,” this 1909 settingby Australian-born Grainger was based on a tune collected in 1885 by MissJ. Ross of New Town, Limavaday, County Derry, Ireland, and published inThe Petrie Collection of Ancient Music of Ireland. Known to many as"Danny Boy," it is a parent’s message sung to a son gone from the belovedhomeland. Grainger’s individuality as a composer is easily recognized bythe unique harmonies and counter melodies which set off this simple tune, dedicated to the memory of the great Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg.

You’ll Come Matilda (Endlessly Waltzing) ....Jess Langston Turner (b. 1983)The unofficial anthem of Australia, “Waltzing Matilda,” is like manyfolksongs—the lyrics are based on actual events, the Australian sheepshearer strike of 1891. They tell the story of a starving drifter who stolesheep from his former master. The owner hunted the man down withthree members of the constabulary and rather than allow himself to becaptured and hanged, the thief jumped into the billabong—a small pond—beside which he had camped. The weight of his “matilda”—his knapsack—sent him struggling to the bottom where he drowned. It is rumored thathis ghost still “waltzes”—roams or wanders—that billabong to this veryday. If one listens carefully, one may hear the “nice” melody turnominous, the drifter sink in the waters, and his voice whispering to thosewho pass by. Jess Turner, a Greenville native now living and composing inVermont, is one of today’s most recognized young composers.

Gaelforce..............................................................Peter Graham (b. 1958)Building on the resurgence of interest in Irish music, this energetic worksets three traditional tunes in the rich colors of the wind band. The jigtune “The Rocky Road to Dublin” appears first and features thewoodwinds. The second tune is the well-known ballad “The Minstrel Boy,”followed by the reel “Tossing the Feathers.”

Flourish for Wind Band .........................................Ralph Vaughan WilliamsOf three Vaughan Williams flourishes, this 1939 work is his first for windband and is a rather obscure composition. Flourish was intended as anoverture for a pageant, but because of the war, was lost in the decadefollowing its premiere. In 1971 the score resurfaced and was finallypublished. Flourish opens with a theme based on a four-note motive.Marked “maestoso,” the music bursts out in brassy colors but then settlesinto a serene, stately melody related to the opening motif and the openingintervals. In the end, Flourish cannot be considered a major rediscovery, but neither should the piece be judged a failure. One reviewer wrote, “It isa delicious morsel, thematically and instrumentally recognizable in aninstant as the work of Vaughan Williams” and a delightful delicacy withwhich to close the concert.
