San Cisco M U S I Cteafortwoare wild by Simone

Jordi, Scarlett, Josh & Nick. The rising indie-pop band, from Fremantle, Western Australia.

San Cisco are wild. Releasing their debut self-titled album just months ago on November 23, it is obvious that it shows a kaleidoscope of radical beats and fabulous lyrics featuring a gradient album cover. It juxtaposes with typical tunes and even each other. Every song quirky and idiosyncratic, these 4 are marvels. They are soaring through the charts, positioned at #7 in the 2011 Triple J’s Hottest 100 with their song “Awkward” and at #10 with San Cisco on the top 10 albums voted by Triple J listeners. Their most recent hits “Fred Astaire” & Wild Things came at #48 & #53 respectively in the 2012 Triple J’s Hottest 100! They’ve travelled thousands of miles, playing many festivals in Australia such as GMT & Splendour, and in 2013, travelling Europe and America wow-ing the newest crowd, as supports for the Vaccines and as headliners themselves. These are just a potpourri of their sundry achievements.

Oh, don’t forgot to listen closely to Wild Things. You may even hear in the background behind clever synths and beats, an interview Jordi had with Sam and Alex from Triple J. So sneaky.

San-who? Listen to…Awkward, Reckless, Fred Astaire, Beach, Nepal and Stella.

Sounds like…Vampire Weekend.

Frankie Magazine recently did an article on The Small Gardens’ terrariums. These miniature gardens in glass worlds are adorable & prove that no space is too small for a bit of greenery & life. The Small Garden have many themed & beautifully crafted terrariums which are sure to suit all. Their aim is to create sanctuaries where people can’t. Great things really do come in small packages, don’t they?

Next time you’re about to have a night out with some friends, why not have a game night? There’s nothing to pay (although everyone could chip in for some delicious pizzas) & even a movie you already own will complete a fun night in.

Get out those dusty old board games, roll a die and discover the kind of fun and laughs you forgot you could have!

Ardent, amazing & ambitious – Amelia Zadro is no stranger to the lens of a camera. Oyster Mag did a “Meet the Models” article on Amelia last year (viewed here.) Newbies can always feel out of place but Amelia has built up her confidence pursuing her career as a model, signing to Priscilla’s, her agency last year.

17

C O V E R / teafortwo

Juggling school and just starting modelling last year showed to be a challenge for Amelia. After always being told to go into Priscilla’s Model Management by her brother’s friend – a fashion designer, she finally did in December, 2012 at the age of 17.

When Amelia was younger, she’s received offers from agencies but wanted to focus on school. Oh, I applaud you for that, seriously. Anyway, she’s built up a portfolio after finishing school and done a few jobs. Now, since school is well and truly over, Amelia is turning the spotlight onto finding more jobs.

Underneath the covers, Amelia continues to learn French, do some yoga, hang out with friends and loves to getaway to the beach.Ticked jobs off the list include modelling for Oyster Mag and a few others. Keep an eye out for Amelia!

Amelia Zadro deserved a “mega babe” award.

During creating the premiere issue of Tea for Two, I caught up with Freya Flavell - the 21 year old jaw-dropping artist/avid tea-drinker who is moving to my home city, Melbourne! Her emotions and thoughts come alive with ink & lead on paper. Ironically, next to me is a pot of tea, whilst I type about this lovely lady full of talent and potential.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.I’m Freya. I recently turned twenty-one and am wondering how I grew up so fast. I’ve lived in Australia most of my life and attended a Steiner School for ten years before finishing my last two years at my local highschool in my regional town. Since graduating I have road tripped Australia in a loyal van called Lazmir with five boys, washed dishes so I could put a penny in the bank, and then caught a flight to Asia where I thought I’d find myself but instead I lost myself. I am inspired by my dreams and am interested in forces stronger than myself, I like the unknown and the bizarre and the different and am always on the lookout for something cool. I don’t think I’ll be a doodler for ever because there’s more to do and more to learn, but for now I am going to move to the city and become a student again.2. How would you describe your work?A little bit personal, a little bit messy, fun, colourful, an expression of feelings both good and bad and very much inspired by love, fashion and stupid conversations.

3. What attracts you to drawing?I have always loved drawing, even when I was a kid. My grandma enjoyed sharing creative pursuits with me and through my many childhood hobbies I found myself always coming back to this. I guess what I love about it is the state of calm it can give you. My time spent sitting quietly is also free time for my mind to stray. The straying is what brings out the new ideas for the next picture. This is probably why I like drawing patterns so much, It’s kind of hypnotising and kind of therapeutic and I spend way to much time doing it, I think.

4. How did you get here?Through many hours of desk time I drew and drew and drew. A lot of the time it was for schoolwork or my folios and occasionally it was just for personal fun. In year twelve I took four folio subjects; Art, Fashion Design, Photography and Visual Communication, and for these subjects I produced at least two folios for each by the end of the year. It took up most of my time and most of my bedroom floor but it really improved my patience and my skill for writing and drawing. Once I finished school I realised I still wanted to keep art journals, and so found myself drawing almost every day anyway. This comes in waves though, and if I have the chance I would much rather be outside. Time is a key aspect. You have to have time to muck up again and again and draw really out of proportion figures and throw them in the bin a hundred times before realising that that sort of drawing isn’t what you want your style to be anyway and so you explore something else. It really is time I reckon.

5. Where do you see yourself in the future? In the next ten years I would like to see myself as a ‘successful’ illustrator or designer, with enough money to buy at least six avocados a day. A bit later in life I see myself designing and building a house and living on an environmentally sustainable property with a few goats, some kids in tye dye overalls and my lover. It’s what I really want.

6. What’s the process behind your art?Depending on what I am drawing, there may be some mental processes or I may just sit at my desk on a very hot day not knowing what to do, so I’ll draw a girl in a skirt. For my drawings that are more thought out I might have been inspired by a dream, or one of those before sleep thought roller coasters that give me bursts of what I think at the time are the best ideas ever but that I hardly remember in the morning. The drawing process is often quite quick, and unless I want very particular lines I don’t a use a grey lead or rub anything out, it’s just the pen straight to paper. Once the outline is done I decide if I want to give it some colour. Usually it’s a yes, and I will colour in with watercolour paint and a brush, and sometimes a pencil or coloured connector pen markers. And if I want to show you guys I will scan my drawing and…upload to tumblr.

G U E S T / A R T / teafortwo

7. What do you love about what you do?What I love is that right now I am just some girl without a job that has enough time to be in her bedroom all day and draw. This is a real privilege, and is soon to change for the worse in a few weeks when I start university. It’s a new step on my creative journey.

24

8. Who inspires you?I am inspired by that idiot on the train, by that blonde model in a magazine, by that weird monster in my daydream, that textile artist from Japan and my ex-boyfriend, mostly ‘cause he broke my heart and now I have something to complain about. As for actual artists, Quentin Blake has always been a favourite. His quirk is out of this world.9. Where can we see more of your lovely artwork? If you’d like to see my art and hear more, please come a’knocking on my blog’s door here at Freya Flavell Does Doodles aka doodoodloo My ears and eyes are always open, and I definitely won’t bite. See you there! Thanks, Freya

Thanks a bunch [of roses] miss Freya Flavell, for taking the time to talk with me! She is soon selling on Etsy also. I hope Freya (and you, the reader) likes the spread & I look forward to what 2013 brings her! xx

Pop Art – slightly forgotten in this modern age – has revolutionised & changed art, it was realistic rendtiions of everyday objects. It first reeled in artists in the areas of mass media, comics, advertising and consumer products. It wasn’t long until Pop Art went hand-in-hand with the era of pop songs and youth. This era of the 1950’s & 60’s became the image that was art – music, film and visuals. Album covers also popped with art, including the Beatles & Elvis Presley. Does the name of the famous artist Andy Warhol ring a bell, too?

ANDY WARHOL

Dandy Andy grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and loved to draw, cut, colour and just be artsy as a child. His mother even encouraged him and gave him a bar of chocolate every time he finished a page in his book.

Andy Warhol continued next page

38

Unfortunately, he contracted a virus in elementary school which made it hard for him to be accepted at school. Despite this, Warhol continued to become a more brilliant artist with each passing day, having discover the blotted-line technique in college. He earned a reputation from this in the 1950’s for demonstrating the technique, and it then went on to be used in commercial advertisements, such as ads for Tiffany & Co.

ANDY WARHOLcontinued

Warhol then began to experiment with pop art. After not getting anywhere, a friend offered their help and said to paint something you love. Andy did just that and painted Campbell’s soup. He created 32 different versions (for every version of soup) and they all sold as a set for $1000. Soon after, Warhol realised he couldn’t make his paintings fast enough on canvas and switched to silk screenings. He then used this method for the rest of his life, and gave life to a very famous figure – Marilyn Monroe.

39

ANDY WARHOL continued

Warhol began to make films from 1963 – 1968, and in his career, made over 60 films. One of these films was 5 and a half hours long, titled “Sleep” which was, if you guessed, of a man sleeping. On July 3, 1968, Warhol was unfortunately shot by a disgruntled actress name Valerie Solanas. The doctors pronounced him clinically dead, but hadanother shot at reviving him, and it worked. Warhol continued to live on – he published a magazine called Interview and wrote several books. He even starred in television. This was during the 1970’s and the 1980’s.On February 21st, 1987, Warhol went under routine gall bladder surgery. For an unknown reason, Warhol passed away the following morning at 58 years old. He influenced art in many ways, including other areas of art and media. He proved that no matter what people think of you or what you look like, you can make the stars shine for what you love.

In memory of Andy Warhol, I am glad that we have been introduced to his art and talent.
