Animals come in many shapes and sizes. Their bodies can be stretchy, bony, or as long as a school bus. Their bodies can also be as small as a fingernail. Animals differ in other ways, too. For one, they have many different coverings. Some have coverings for protection. Others use coverings to stay warm or cool. Some animals use their coverings to hide. And others use their coverings to help them swim, slither, or fly.

The porcupine has an unusual covering. It has a coat of sharp spines. These spines protect it from other animals. After all, what animal would want to take a bite of a needle sandwich? So, the porcupine usually gets left alone!

Sharks have skin covered in tiny scales. These scales are shaped like little teeth. The skin feels smooth when it’s rubbed from head to tail. But when it’s rubbed from tail to head, it feels like sandpaper. This special skin helps the shark swim faster.

The chameleon is a reptile. It has leathery skin covered in dry scales. But that isn’t what makes the chameleon special. The chameleon can change color and hide in plain sight. It turns brown on brown branches. It turns green on green leaves.

Totem poles are carved and painted with nature shapes. Birds, fish, frogs, beavers, whales, and wolves are often found on totem poles.

Totem poles come in many sizes. Some can be 65 feet tall. That’s as tall as three giraffes standing on each other’s shoulders!

Totem poles are carved for many reasons. Some tell stories. They tell about events and people. Others mark the places where families and groups live. Totem poles can stand as a warning. They are like a “Do Not Enter” sign. Others act like a welcome mat. They tell visitors it’s okay to come inside.

Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest carve totem poles. Most carve them by hand. They make the tools themselves. Some use power tools. But most prefer to carve the old way.

Totem poles are found today along the coasts of Washington State and British Columbia. Each one is a unique work of art.
