Lesson Information and DirectionsWhy should I use this activity?

Many students have difficulty applying the scientific method outside of the classroom. Somestudents find the scientific method boring. By participating in this activity, students can seethe scientific method at work in something seemingly unrelated to science class, and theycan do it with something more familiar and fun—selfies.

How do I use this activity? Before Class: Teachers should print one copy of all six of the selfie scenario cards (pages 4-6)for every group of students. Each copy needs to be cut into cards, shuffled, and placed in anenvelope or held together with a paperclip. Print enough copies of the Steps of the ScientificMethod Activity worksheet (page 7 and the optional page 8) for every student.

Before and During the Activity: Review the steps of the scientific method together as a class.Organize the students into pairs or small groups. Give each student a copy of the Steps of theScientific Method Activity worksheet. Students should work together with their groups tocomplete Part One of their sheet. Once all groups are finished with Part One, give each groupone complete set of selfie scenario cards. Explain the sorting activity (Part Two on theworksheet). For the sorting activity, students will work with their groups to organize theselfie scenario cards into the order of the scientific method.

After the Activity: The whole class will go over the correct order of the cards together.Students will then work individually to complete Part Three of the worksheet. If time permitsand the teacher chooses, students can graph the data from the scenario and/or complete theExtension Assignment.

Do you have any tips for using this activity in my classroom?¾ Print a classroom set and laminate the cards so they last longer.¾ After the groups of students organize their cards, have each student organize the cards

individually while group mates check the answers.¾While you go over the correct order of the cards as a class, discuss how Mitchell (the selfie

taker) demonstrates the scientific method in each scenario.

Mitchell loves taking selfies and postingthem on social media. He thinks all ofhis selfies are pretty adorable, but hewonders what will get him the most

likes. He asks himself, “Which type ofselfie will get me the most likes on

social media?”

Mitchell takes two selfies. In his firstselfie, he makes his best duckface. In his second selfie he does a nice,

manly over the shoulder smolder. Thenhe posts both pictures and waits for the

likes to come rolling in.

Based on the results of his experiment, Mitchell’shypothesis was correct. The duckface selfie got21 likes in the first hour and received a total of101 likes after five hours. The over the shouldersmolder selfie only got 7 likes in the first hour

and received a total of 53 likes after five hours.Mitchell’s duckface selfie was almost twice as

popular on social media.

Mitchell asks his most beautiful friends theiropinions about what makes a good selfie.

He also learns more about the popularity ofvarious types of selfies by looking at famous

celebrity selfies. He notices that duckfaceselfies and over the shoulder smolder selfies

always get a lot of attention online.

Answer KeyThe steps of the scientific method and the answers to the scenarios are as follows:

1. Make an observation and ask a question about itMitchell loves taking selfies and posting them on social media. He thinks all of his selfies are pretty adorable, but he wonders what will get him the most likes. He asks himself, “Which type of selfie will get me the most likes on social media?”

2. Research if neededMitchell asks his most beautiful friends their opinions about what makes a good selfie. He also learns more about the popularity of various types of selfies by looking at famous celebrity selfies. He notices that duckface selfies and over the shoulder smolder selfies always get a lot of attention online.

3. Form a hypothesisSince Mitchell has rosy red lips and excellent chiseled cheekbones, he decides that duckface is the way to go. He thinks to himself, “If I take a duckface selfie, then it will get more likes on social media.”

4. Test the hypothesis in an experimentMitchell takes two selfies. In his first selfie, he makes his best duckface. In his second selfie he does a nice, manly over the shoulder smolder. Then he posts both pictures and waits for the likes to come rolling in.

5. Record and analyze the data

6. Write a conclusion to sum up the resultsBased on the results of his experiment, Mitchell’s hypothesis was correct. The duckface selfie got 21 likes in the first hour and received a total of 101 likes after five hours. The over the shoulder smolder selfie only got 7 likes in the first hour and received a total of 53 likes after five hours. Mitchell’s duckface selfie was almost twice as popular on social media.
