Act and Protect TEACHER PD WORKSHOP TAKE THE REEF INTO THE CLASSROOM One-day Professional Development workshop for teachers with an interest in the marine sciences, aquatic practices, biology and STEM, and both senior and junior high school science teachers. Includes lectures, hands-on classroom activities and take-home materials. This one-day workshop will include a presentation about coral bleaching, CoralWatch and citizen science and a practical session identifying coral genus using the CoralFinder.. Teachers attending the MTAQ (Marine Teachers Association Queensland) conference will be able to collect Coral Health Chart data during the citizen science field day. Entering the data and exploring the CoralWatch global database, incl. data extraction and analyses, will be part of this extra PD-day offered by CoralWatch. PROGRAM 9.00 Presentation: ‘CoralWatch - Citizen Scientist Acting on Coral Bleaching’ 9.45 Practical: Using CoralWatch curriculum linked education materials, incl Virtual reality 10.15 Morning tea 10.30 CoralWatch Global Database: Data availability & applications, incl marine science data test Practical: data entry using CoralWatch website and phone App, data extraction, creating graphs 12.30 Lunch break 13.30 Coral Identification - Classify corals to genus levels (using coral skeletons and photos) 14.30 Debrief workshop: discussion, sharing experiences, ideas and feedback 15.00 Workshop closing CoralWatch is a non-profit citizen science organization based at The University of Queensland. The program integrates global monitoring of coral bleaching with education about coral reef conservation. CoralWatch project manager Diana Kleine will be presenting and facilitating this workshop.
