AFL Victoria’s SuperKick competition is a school based football kicking competition designed to get students learning the basics of AFL football whilst having the chance to compete for great prizes for themselves and their school.

AFL Victoria’s SuperKick is open to all Secondary school students in Victoria. The competition is open to all male and female students of all ages. Schools from across the State are invited to coduct their own SuperKick competitions during Terms 2 and 3, where students compete by seeing how far they can kick a footy.

At the completion of each schools SuperKick competition teachers log the winners details, including distance kicked, into the online system at aflvic.com.au/schools-2/competitions/superkick. The top five male and the top five female kicks in the State will be invited to attend the State Final of the AFL Victoria’s SuperKick, to be held at the VFL Grand Final in September.

//Competition Lesson Plan

Lesson AimsAFL Victoria’s SuperKick Challenge can be intergrated into a lesson, or used as a stand alone activity. The aim of the lesson is to increase students ball skills and coordination, culminating in the SuperKick Challenge. At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

• Kick accurately to a stationary partner over a distance of 12-15 meters.• Display good technique with ball drop, contact point and follow through.• Mark a football that has travelled 12-15 meters.

Kicking TechniqueThe following points may assist in enhancing a student’s skill development. We suggest that no more than three points are emphasised at any given time to allow students to get comfortable with each point.

1. Hands grip on either side of the ball, which is held vertically.2. Fingers pointing downward.3. Relaxed arms with wrists cocked slightly forward.4. Ball held over kicking foot.5. Ball and body lined up in the direction of the target.6. Ball is dropped from below the waist height and guided by the same hand as the kicking foot.7. Keep eyes on ball drop and at point of contact.8. Lower point of the ball to make contact with foot just above toes.9. Head and shoulders above ball at point of contact.10. Minimal follow through of the leg, with majority of the power coming from the lower leg (knee joint).11. Kicking leg should follow through towards target after kick, ensuring to your toe.12. Back spin through the air is one point to assess a successful drop punt kick.

RECOMMENDED SKILL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIESThe following points may assist in enhancing a student’s skill development. We suggest that no more than three points are emphasised at any given time to allow students to get comfortable with each point.

• Kick to each other. Gradually increase the distance only when the ball is marked by the stationary target.• Partner kicking in a two person kick-to-kick formation, students can work through the following

challenges:

• Students are to kick off a dome/cone to their partner.• Students use one hand when marking and releasing the ball (using preferred and non-preferred side).• Students are to kick balancing on one foot (using preferred and non-preferred side).• Students are to kick with their eyes closed visualising the target.• Students receiving the ball must have their back turned to the player delivering the ball.• Students jog towards their target then kick and must land on their kicking foot, and follow

through with at least three steps.• Students kick the ball along the ground (forward spinning motion) to their partner.

The following instructions outline how to facilitate the SuperKick Activity:

1. Pick an area with sufficient distance to kick (approx. 50-70 metres).2. From a clearly defined starting line, mark out 10 metre increments with cones or witches hats.3. Students can take a run up, but the kick must be from the clearly defined starting line, and the

ball must land within the corridor that is 20 metres wide.4. The distance of the kick is measure from the centre of the clearly defined starting line to

where the ball first makes contact with the ground. Measurements must be taken to the closest 0.1 of a metre, for example 52.4m.

5. A size 4 leather Australian Rules football must be used by all female competition participants, and a size 5 leather Australian Rules football must be used by all male competition participants.

6. Record each students kick in the supplied recording sheet, each student receives 3 kicks.7. At the conclusion of the school competition, results should be entered online to the nearest

0.1 of a metre (for example 52.4m) at www.aflvic.com.au/schools-2/competitions/superkick.8. Ideally kicks should not be wind assisted as this may give misleading results.
