INTRODUCTION

What is POWER Verb 8?

The eight most commonly used verbs in the English language make it

possible to express ourselves freely.

Power Verb 8 is designed to enable English beginners to express

themselves easily in English without having to follow complex and

difficult courses. In reality, learning how to use each of the eight most

commonly used verbs will enable the learner to use a considerable

number of expressions.

What are the 8 Power Verbs?

The eight power verbs include Be, Do, Go, Get, Have, Make, Take,

and Put. Each of these verbs is active and frequently utilized in

everyday communication. With these eight power verbs, we can

effectively communicate our daily routines.

STUDY GUIDE

Each unit of Power Verb 8 comprises 3 parts;

Part 1 Power Verbs;

Part 2 Collocation; and

Part 3 Wrap Up.

Part I. Power Verb

How to learn power verbs

Using the Power Verb matrix, we can learn a diverse range of English expressions.

■ Power Verb Matrix

get on: get off:

I get on the bus. = I get off the bus.

take in: take out of:

Fish take in oxygen through gills. = I took a ball out of the box.

Through examples of matrix utilization, we can

explain the overall concept of this textbook.

However, we should begin by stressing that not

all verbs, adverbs and prepositions can be

matched with each other. Thus, it is important to

state that, with steady learning and practice, we

should try to foster our linguistic sensibility and

derive combinations of the suitable properties of

words.

Page 7: TEACHER’Sbook.carrotenglish.com/pdf/PowerVerbandCollocations2017... · 2019-02-22 · Using the prepositions given in the box, place the correct word to fill in the blanks, and

Like the matrix shown above, by combining the eight power verbs given on the

vertical line, with the prepositions (adverbs) given on the horizontal line, we can

learn the meaning of each word.

In addition, these combinations make it possible to form diverse expressions.

Power verbs with diverse meanings can be used as a set depending on the

situation, or they can be combined with other words or used separately within a

sentence.

예시 1.

∙ take out: 밖으로 꺼내다

1) He is taking out the box from the storage.

그는 창고에서 상자를 꺼내고 있다.

2) He is taking the box out of the storage.

그는 창고에서 상자를 꺼내고 있다.

예시 2.

∙ put down: 내려놓다

1) I put down the pen.

나는 펜을 내려 놓았어.

2) I put the pen down.

Part II. Collocation

Collocation means “setting or placing together.” If we are familiar with

collocations, we can effectively learn to make the most authentic expressions

used by native English speakers.

What is Collocation?

The word collocation comes from co(together) + location, and is also referred to

as collocation learning. Collocation is classified into the combination of verb +

noun, or the combination of adjective + noun, etc. If we learn about collocations,

we can create diverse meanings, thereby enriching our English expressions.

Collocation is also referred to as a combination of words whose properties fit

each other.

For instance, the expression

do ready (X)

is awkward. That is because the probability that a combination of the words ‘do’

and ‘ready’ exists is low. Meanwhile, the expression

get ready (O)

means ‘being prepared’ and is formed by combining the words ‘get’ + ‘ready’. As

such, when we study English, we should always try to recognize collocations in

order to increase our linguistic sense of whether or not a given sentence is

awkward. Such a linguistic sense is considered the essence of vocabulary

proficiency.

Part III. Wrap up

Review is the most effective method of acquiring and retaining what we have

learned. Through Wrap Up, you can make Power Verb and Collocation yours.

replacing “on” with “off” has the opposite meaning of “turn off” or

“shut down”. Use “off” as a power verb to make 3 more sentences.
