Flipped Learning Dr. Paul O’Neill

(University of Sheffield)

What is the flipped classroom? Not one single definition

Flipped classroom is an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning that reverses the traditional learning environment by delivering instructional content, often online, outside of the classroom. It moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. In a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home and engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance of a mentor.

My objections

Recording all our lectures is problematic

If it’s in a book why does it have to be repeated in video format

The flipped classroom is nothing new - it corresponds to the traditional notion of a seminar and doing the preparatory work for class.

Advantages

Students should be acquiring the skills to become independent learners.

Realisation that the material is complex and not all students may understand the material or grasp the overall concepts.

Flipped classroom - setting work for students and the lecture being devoted to problem solving
