Teaching-Learning-Assessing
“adequate assessments should be utilized to determine specific
levels of fitness and the effects of intervention programs designed to develop and maintain physical fitness”
WHY SHOULD WE ASSESS?
Assessing Physical Fitness
Muscular Strength and Endurance
Strength is defined as maximizing muscle exertion in a brief time period. Endurance is defined as the exertion over a long period of time.
Upper Body Assessment-Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Free Weights, Bar Dips, Weight Machines
Lower Body Assessment-Leg Extension, Leg Push, Leg Lift, Leg Press, Calf raises, treadmill (walk or jog)
Assessing Steven
Steven is a 18 year old, disabled student who would like to be enrolled in the weight room and strengthen his entire body, lose 25 lbs., and increase his muscle strength. He has cerebral palsy. He has a lack of muscle coordination in his arms. He also has a scissor-like gait with crossed knees. He hopes to strengthen his legs to straighten his gait as much as possible during the semester. He has 16 weeks during the semester to accomplish his goals
Assessing Steven
In the case of Stephen, he assessed with the following stats:
He also spent 5 minutes walking on the treadmill and declined to jog.
Pull Up 4 Leg Lift 10
Push Up 7 Leg Extension 12
Free Weight10 lb. (reps)
10 Leg Lift20 lb. (reps)
6
Bar Dips 3 Calf Raises 8
Teaching and Learning
Stephen will be given an aid who will assist him in his workout and will be responsible for motivating him during the semester. The aid will record the work outs which will be on Monday/Wednesday 11:00 to 12:20. I will continually monitor the workout sheet for assessment and make changes as needed keeping Stephen on track. At the end of the semester a final assessment will be given.
