Teaching the Next GenerationTeaching the Next GenerationTeaching the Next GenerationTeaching the Next GenerationTeaching the Next GenerationDiversity in the English Classroom

Dear conference participants,

Welcome to our first conference in Mansfield in recent memory. We are happy to be in a new place, with some exciting new presenters and (we hope) new and returning participants. English educationfaces great challenges and obstacles, but as a friend always tells me when I feel weighted down by ever-shifting regulations, “Everything is an opportunity.” Take the opportunity over the course of the nexttwo days to look at our profession and its call through new eyes as you listen to speakers, engage withworkshop leaders and attendees, and reflect on your own best practices.

I hope that these two days will strengthen your commitment to the classroom, to the students weteach, and to the community of English teachers in New England. Please take the opportunity to talkwith a board member or two from NEATE while you’re here. We want your feedback about how wecan, as the professional organization for New England teachers of English, serve you better. To thatend, we are now on Facebook, so please add us to your Facebook friends list. In the coming weeks,we will be unveiling a new, more interactive, more user-friendly website. Please take a few minuteswhile you are here to tell us what you need, what you want from your professional organization, andwhat you see as our role in the future.

I invite you all to stay after Friday’s full slate of workshops to attend the President’s reception whereyou can mingle with your colleagues, celebrate the profession, hear some poetry, and kick back a littlebit at the end of the week.

Sincerely,

Cathy Nicastro, PresidentNew England Association of Teachers of English
