An iPad Teaching Framework• iPad instruction centered around the following instructional

framework for learning:

• I. Focused Instruction – The teacher presents the lesson purpose, alerting students to the learning target and providing them with goals to measure their progress.

• II. Guided Instruction – Students begin to apply the skills, strategies, or processes that were introduced, with the teacher monitoring progress and collecting formative assessment.

iPad Teaching Framework cont.

• III. Collaborative Learning – Students consolidate their thinking and work together to apply new skills and knowledge to a novel situation. Learners engage in face-to-face and digital conversations to deepen their understanding.

• IV. Independent Learning – Students apply what they have been taught.

Focused Instruction• Focused instruction prepares students for learning by focusing

them on the content, strategies, or skills being taught.• Perhaps record a screencast of yourself delivering the purpose

statement and elaborating on its details.• Using analogies to link prior knowledge to new learning.• Modeling thinking aloud.• Using your iPad, an Apple TV and projector allows your iPad to

be seen by your class.

Guided Instruction• Consider the use of apps such as NearPod and ShowMe. Both

provide opportunities to engage students and gain insight into their understanding of new content. Allows for formative assessment.

• See example on page 17. • www.nearpod.com• www.showme.com

Collaborative Learning• Simply requiring two or more students to share a tablet can be

enough to prompt the kind of face-to-face interactions that benefit all students.

• The Type.with.me app is a web-based, real-time collaborative tool that allows up to 16 users at a time to work on the same document. Each writer’s comments are highlighted in a different color. www.typewithme.com

• The Aurasma app allows students to take part in a scavenger hunt or gallery walk. www.aurasma.com

• Students can create original content together using Haiku Deck, a presentational software for tablets. See page 24.

Independent Learning• The Literacy Design Collaborative has developed useful task

templates that encourage students to continue to build their knowledge during the independent learning phase.

• www.literacydesigncollaborative.org• Students can use tablets for conducting independent research

and inquiry.

Logistical Considerations for Using iPads

• Aligning instruction and learning objectives with the appropriate apps

• Technical support from IT personnel as needed• Infrastructure considerations such as adequate wireless

capability• Ongoing professional development
