• The Fuller Technique was developed by Richard and Elizabeth Fuller.

• It is a combination of the alphabet, phonics and whole methods of word recognition.

• It requires that the beginning reading should first have the following:

1. Mastery of the names and forms of the letters of the alphabet.

2. Adequate vocabulary so that the words used in the Fuller lessons will have meaning for them

Page 3: Teaching Word Recognition

• There are 100 Fuller lessons, and these lessons are taken up until the next grade levels.

• The sequence of the lessons is modified for the Filipino beginning readers. The goal is accuracy and fluency in reading.

How to Use the Fuller Lessons

1. Teach to mastery the name and form of each letter in the alphabet. The children need not know which are vowels or consonants.

Page 5: Teaching Word Recognition

2. Teach the regular sounds of the consonants, following this sequence:

1) Mm 7) Cc (k) 13. Dd2) Ss 8) Rr 14. Jj3) Ll 9) Nn 15. Ww4) Ff 10) Bb 16. Vv5) Tt 11) Gg (go) 17. Zz6) Hh 12) Pp 18. Yy

3. Present the words in each lesson in a column. With the help of a pointer/marker, say the first word. Move the pointer/marker to the next word and let the children read it aloud. Point out the similar endings of the words to the children. The rhymed endings help them read the words down the column. For example, in the short e word family, let them read the words that in in –et first.

4. Give exercises and games that will lead to accuracy and automaticity in reading the words, such as reading the flashcards, card drawing game, Bingo game, matching words with pictures, etc.

5. Introduce some sight words, which will help them in reading the phrases, such as is, are, the, has, in, on, etc.

6. Introduce phrases, such as:in the net the wet jethas a pet the vethas a net gets the pet

7. Introduce sentences. The net is wet.The vet is in the jet.

Page 10: Teaching Word Recognition

8. Introduce Who, What, Where questions. The vet has a pet.Who has a pet?

9. Go to the next column. Let the children see that the word endings have changed. Say the first word again and read them aloud down the column.

Page 11: Teaching Word Recognition

10.Do the same for each column in each of the first five lessons. Don’t ask them to read across the columns yet. This will confuse them.

11. After the first five lessons, review lesson 1. This time, the children should read each column downward, then across the page from column to column.

Page 12: Teaching Word Recognition

12. Do the same with the succeeding lessons. They read each column downward, then across the page from column to column.

13. Do the same with the succeeding lessons. They read each column downward, then across the page. Always review a previous less before introducing a new lesson.
