Teacher of Digital Audio Concepts and ProToolsTEACHING EXPERIENCE: Teacher of Digital Audio classes using Avid’s ProTools at New York University, ’02-’12, The School of Visual Arts,’02-’12, and Mercy College. ’08-’12. (Undergraduate, graduate and continuing education) All classes taught were a mixture of lecture and lab work time. References upon request. New York University: CADA (The Center for Advanced Digital Applications) One 15 week introductory class.[Graduate level]. • Digital Audio Production and Sound Design with ProTools Topics include: The history of audio in film, analog/digital audio concepts, audio post production concepts, microphone concepts, field recording techniques. ProTools: importing of field recordings, importing of QuickTime movies, sound effects editing in sync to picture, sound design, ADR, Foley, equalization, compression, basic mixing concepts, final output. New York University: SCPS (The School of Continuing and Professional Studies) Two 10 week classes: Audio Recording (Fall), and Sound Design (Spring) [Continuing Education]. • Audio Recording: In depth look at the process of capturing sound in a variety of situations. Topics include: Physics and acoustics, psychoacoustics and masking, analog v. digital capture, history of sound in film, microphones - types and applications, polar patterns, cable coiling and management, field recorders (Nagra, Fostex FR-2, Zoom H4N) recording dialog in various combinations with different number of mics, boom operation, wireless mics, field mixers (Shure FP-33), Foley and ADR recording, stereo micing techniques and phase considerations, equalization and compression/limiting. • Sound Design: Introduction to audio for film and video. Topics include: Types of sound in film, digital audio concepts, ProTools introduction and file management, importing of QuickTime movies, sound effects editing in sync to picture, sound design for live action film, template setup in ProTools, signal routing and bussing, gain staging, reference levels & tones, academy leader, commercial advertising and promo sound design, sound design for animation, music editing, equalization, compression, basic mixing concepts, final output. The School of Visual Arts: (Graduate Computer Art Department) One 15 week introductory class [Graduate level]. • Sound Workshop I: Topics include: The history of audio in film, analog/digital audio concepts, audio post production concepts, microphone concepts, field recording techniques. ProTools: Importing of field recordings, importing of QuickTime movies, sound effects editing in sync to picture, sound design, ADR, Foley, equalization, compression, basic mixing concepts, final output. Mercy College: (Music Technology Department) Four 15 week classes [Undergraduate level]. Audio Production III (Fall) & IV (Spring) [advanced core music engineering courses], Audio for Video & Advanced Music Mixing (electives). • Audio Production III: Topics include: Digital audio and binary numbers, sampling, quantization and bit depth, dither, jitter, buffering, file management, monitoring latency, error correction, interconnectivity, MIDI and virtual instruments, audio file formats - ProTools: bussing basics, shuffle/slip/grid/spot editing modes, fades, track playlists, equalization, plug-ins, inserts, automation basics, mixing basics. • Audio Production IV: Topics include: Lossy audio file formats, advanced signal routing, metering, dynamics processing, side-chain dynamics processing, networking basics, over sampling, video technology and synchronization - ProTools: sends/returns, memory locations, screen sets, mix automation, groups, plug-in automation, effects: reverb/delay/chorus, tempo mapping, advanced MIDI and virtual instruments, pitch and time processing. • Audio for Video: Topics include: The history of audio in film, audio post production concepts, types of sound in film, microphone concepts, field recording techniques, Foley/location recording, video technology, synchronization and SMPTE timecode, ADR, delivery formats, surround mixing, music clearances copyrights - ProTools: Importing of field recordings, importing of QuickTime movies, templates, bussing, reference levels & tones, academy leader, sound effects editing in sync to picture, sound design, dialog/production audio editing, ADR, Foley, equalization, compression, basic mixing concepts, final output. • Advanced Music Mixing: This class is intended to be a mixing practice workshop, where the students apply the concepts they have learned in their core courses. Topics include: Mix aspects, music analysis, song structure as a map to the mix, imaging, mixing procedures, music editing, equalizers, compressors/limiters, noise gates/expanders, faders, panning, time-based effects, the New York mixing style, the LA mixing style, the London mixing style.
