Amber Lakin has found her calling. The emory Woodruff scholar volunteers as a team leader for Jumpstart, a pro-gram that brings college stu-dents together with preschool-ers for tutoring and mentoring to improve language skills. lakin, a political science major from california, plans lessons, leads activities, and organizes a team of fellow emory students who spend two mornings a week jumpstarting these young minds. one day, she hopes to take her calling to the larger stage to help develop national school policy.

What happens when the brain doesn’t work right? That’s what interests Tyler Glea-son, a neuroscience major who spent a semester in a genetics lab, examining the dBH gene and psychosis. Tyler loves research because it’s not just science for the sake of science. research gives him the potential to uncover new knowledge that just might change lives.

Charlotte Watts first traveled to visit her italian granddad when she was six weeks old.But it wasn’t until her sopho-more year at emory that she got the chance to work with the renaissance paintings that she adores up close. Through a study abroad program in florence, charlotte is learning the fresco techniques of the old masters in preparation for a career in art conserva-tion. While there, she’s gotten a chance to photograph fashion runway shows in palazzo pitti and paint the same landscapes as da vinci.

students wanting a hot cup of Joe can visit the green Bean, emory’s fair trade cof-fee cart, a non-profit business that promotes sustainability and raises money for student projects. anthropology major Emily Cumbie-Drake runs the green Bean, and she’ll take her passion for sustainability to emory’s sister school, st. andrews university, this fall as a Bobby Jones scholar. in addi-tion to sustainability courses, the phi Beta Kappa member is pursuing studies in scottish history and culture. There’s also a jig or two in her future with the st. andrews dance society.
