HeaD CoaCH mICHaeL sIsTI Michael Sisti made the switch from associate head coach of Mercyhurst’s men’s varsity hockey team to women’s head coach in March of 1999. His task: to build a Division I women’s program and to make it competitive as soon as possible. In six seasons, he’s done just that. The Lakers made the NCAA playoffs for the first time in

school history in 2005, but lost to Harvard 5-4 in an epic triple-overtime thriller at Harvard Saturday, March 19. For his efforts, Sisti was named Division I Women’s Coach of the Year. Sisti’s teams have combined for 140 wins to date in 202 games, 51 setbacks, and eleven ties (.720). The Lakers have won five regular season conference championships, two in the Great Lakes Women’s Hockey Association (GLWHA) and the last three seasons in College Hockey America (CHA). He guided Mercyhurst to GLWHA and CHA playoff championships the last four years and a Division I top ten ranking throughout most of the previous four seasons. The Lakers also play one of the nation’s toughest schedules each season. Mercyhurst had four CHA First Team picks in 2004-05, two second team choices, and one member of the All-Rookie Team. Mercyhurst defeated Quinnipiac in the CHA semifinals and Niagara for the second straight year in the CHA championship tilt. The Lakers had five All-Tournament Team selections, including se-nior forward Teresa Marchese, who was named Tournament MVP. Eight players were named to the CHA All-Academic Team. Coach Sisti and his counterparts at Findlay and Wayne State joined forces in 2000 to start the Great Lakes Women’s Hockey Association (GLWHA). Mercyhurst won the regular season title both years and captured the tournament title in 2002 with a 4-2 victory over Findlay. Following the 2001-02 season, Mercyhurst, Findlay, Wayne State, and Niagara started a women’s league in College Hockey America (CHA) and began competition in 2002-03. Findlay discontinued hockey after the 2003-04 season and Quinnipiac joined in 2004-05. The Bobcats left after one season in favor of the ECACHL and were replaced by Robert Morris. Sisti was named GLWHA Coach of the Year in 2002 and CHA Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2005. For his efforts he was also selected as a finalist for the 2001-2002, 2002-2003, and 2003-2004 Division I Coach of the Year award. His teams have done a great deal off the ice as well. For six consecutive years, the team’s cumulative grade point average has been above a 3.0. The Lady Lakers have also been very active in the community. This year’s team has donated over 200 hours on various community service projects. Sisti was inducted into the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame in late September 2002.

Sara Simard comes to Mercy-hurst from a suc-cess fu l career at St. Lawrence University. While at St. Lawrence, the Saints made the Frozen Four in 2001 (finished with silver) and in 2004 (bronze). The Saints also made the ECAC playoffs every year she was there. Simard received the ECAC All-Academic Team award all four years. Last year, she was an assistant coach of the North American Hockey Academy, where the team finished42-10-10. Maria Lewis is in her sixth season with the women’s ice hockey program and her first as associate head coach. Prior to coaching at Mercyhurst, Lew-is was an assistant coach at the Univer-sity of Maine. She has been a private skating and hockey instructor and has worked with

players and teams from novice through advanced. In 2004, Lewis was co-head coach at the 17/18 USA Select Festival in Lake Placid, NY. Mercyhurst accomplished a number of firsts last season and, buoyed by its first trip to the NCAAs, hopes to continue the momentum in 2005-06. First, the team made the NCAA playoffs for the first time in its six-year history and forced Harvard, the eventual national runners-up, to triple overtime before succumbing 5-4. Second, senior netminder Desi Clark became the college’s first Division I All-America. Clark, a top 10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, led Division I in goals-against-aver-age (1.25) while the Lakers led the nation in scoring defense (1.16). Clark made an NCAA-record 78 saves in the loss at Harvard. And third, head coach Michael Sisti was named Na-tional Division I Coach of the Year. Sisti’s team won 28 games last season, the most in program history, and he himself has amassed 140 wins in just six years at the helm. In addition to Clark, the Lakers lost four forwards to graduation including two of the squad’s top four scorers. Te-resa Marchese, a Patty Kazmaier Award nominee and College Hockey America Player of the Year, finished as the team’s lead-ing scorer with 21 goals and 32 assists for 53 points. Marchese totaled 90 points in her two-year stay in Erie. Also lost were Sara McDonald, Chrissy Yule, and Lindsay Dellow. McDonald had 26 points last season and ended her career with 101 points. Yule, a three-year captain, never missed a game in her career and finished with 21 points last season and 90 in her four years. Dellow totaled 14 points last season and finished with 63 in her career. The Lakers return nine players with double-digit points last season led by senior forward Samantha Shirley (Mississauga, Ontario) and junior forward Stefanie Bour-beau (Charlesbourg, Quebec). Shirley ended with 37 points (second on the team) on 18 goals and 19 assists. Bourbeau was right behind Shirley with 18 lamplighters and a dozen helpers. Also back up front are junior Julia Colizza (8-17=25; Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario); sophomore Stephanie Jones (13-11=24; Grande Prairie, Alberta); sophomore Sherilyn Fraser (5-10=15; Alberton, PEI); junior Sarah Kurth (2-2=4; Brown Deer, Wisc.); and sophomore Kristen Erickson (1-1=2; Akron, Ohio). Mercyhurst had the nation’s sixth best offense a year ago, averaging 3.70 goals-per-game. Defensively, Mercyhurst returns the heir apparent to Clark in sophomore Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ontario). Hosier had a flawless freshman campaign with a 12-0-0 record, a .953 save percentage, and a 0.75 goals-against-average. Hosier showed great promise from the outset by shutting out New Hampshire in her first collegiate start. All six defensemen are back including junior Ashley Pendleton (5-14=19; Orton, Ontario); junior Michelle Bonello (4-13=17; Mississauga, Ontario); senior Danielle Lansing (5-10=15; Red Deer, Alberta); sophomore Danielle Ayearst (3-12=15; Whistler, BC); junior Jill Nugent (2-5=7; New Glasgow, Nova Scotia); and junior Lesley McArthur (0-5=5; Kanata, Ontario). The defense allowed only 43 goals in 37 games last season.

season oUTLooK Added to the mix will be this year’s incoming class which includes four forwards, two goaltenders and a de-fender. Two American goaltenders, Courtney Drennen and Nicole Nelson, will provide depth in net. Drennen, a native of Fort Collins, Colo., is a product of the Warner Hockey School and won the AMMFHL title at Warner. She is one of the most athletic netminders in the nation and has attended the U.S. National camp every year since 2003. She also at-tended the Women’s International Ice Hockey Federation’s Development Camp in Finland in 2004 as one of only five Americans invited to the camp. Nelson, a product of Minot, N.D., will enroll at Mercyhurst as the reigning “Miss Hockey” of North Dakota. The 5-10 goalie led Minot High School to three-straight state tournament appearances. The four forwards that have committed to Mercy-hurst will also have the task of trying to replace the stellar class of forwards the Lakers lost due to graduation. Emily Berzins is also a product of the Warner Hockey School and served as the squad’s assistant captain last season. Valerie Chouinard played for the Montreal Axion of the NWHL last season against Olympic-caliber talent. In 2003 she was a member of the Team Quebec under-18 squad that won the silver medal at the 2003 Canada Winter Games. Robyn Law was a member of the Team Ontario under-18 team that won this year’s gold medal at the Canada Winter Games and was named the MVP of the semifinal game. Courtney Unruh rounds out the class of forwards. Last season she played for the BC Breakers of the WWHL with American hockey legend Cammi Granato. She also served as the team captain for the under 18 Team BC squad. Natalie Payne, a defender, was the assistant cap-tain of the under 18 Team Ontatio national championship team and was also the assistant captain for her former team, the Mississauga Chiefs. Sisti and the Lakers are looking forward to their next challenge. A young defensive core, a solid group of forwards, and a talented incoming class bodes well for the future of the Lakers as they battle for another shot at the NCAA National Championship in 2005-06.

Pete Russo enters his 17th year heading the Department of Athletics at Mercyhurst College. Over the years, Russo has initiated an aggressive expansion and modernization of the department’s staff, programs and facilities.

The expansion of the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, remodeling of the Recreation Center, construc-tion of the Mercyhurst Ice Center and Hirtzel Field, one of the region’s best baseball facilities, and the construction of Tullio Field that returned football to the college, are just a few of the improvements made during Russo’s tenure. Russo’s agenda has also included moving the sports programs from independent status to confer-ence membership. Fourteen varsity sports compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Con-ference (GLIAC). Football moved to Division II scholarship in the fall of 1998 and became a part of the

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Hockey joined the Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s (MAAC) Hockey League in 1999. Men’s volleyball competes in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). Mercyhurst initiated women’s varsity golf and women’s varsity ice hockey in the fall of 1999. The college increased its num-ber of varsity sports to 25 in 2001-02 with the addition of men’s and women’s water polo and wrestling. Russo was also instrumental in establishing the first athletic programs at Mercyhurst-North East. During his years at the Hurst, Russo has held several committee positions with the Tri-State Athletic Association, Eastern College Athletic Conference, National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He served as president of the GLIAC for the 1998-99 academic year. He is presently Chairman of the GLIAC Championship Committee. In September of 2000, Russo was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee. Russo also served as chairman of the Great Lakes basketball region. Russo played a major role in the rating and selection of teams that participated in the NCAA Division II Regional Basketball Tournament as well as the final Elite Eight National Tournament.

Dr. Michael J. McQuillen, former vice president of aca-demic affairs and dean, succeeded Dr. William P. Garvey, who retired as college president on Feb. 23, following an unprecedented 25 years of remarkable growth on both the Erie and North East campuses of Mercyhurst College.

McQuillen, 60, is a native of Tonawanda, N.Y., and has been with Mercyhurst since 1971, coming to the college at age 27. He currently holds the rank of professor of history. He was granted tenure by the board of trustees in 1977. He served as vice president of academic affairs of the college from 1988-1994, associate dean from 1994-1996 and dean of libraries from 1999-2002. He is a former director of the history depart-ment, past chair of the division of social sciences, a former director of the Egan Scholars program and was a member of the President’s Cabinet for eight years. In addition, he was co-chair of the 1992 Middle States Self-Study Evaluation team and received

the prestigious “Teaching Excellence Award” from the college in 2003 by vote of his peers in recognition of his commitment to the teaching profession and for upholding the highest standards in education as a master teacher and role model at the college. McQuillen earned his bachelor of arts degree in history from Canisius College in 1966 and his doctoral degree in history from the University of Virginia in 1973, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He is a noted author of local historical writings, in particular of the Dr. Gertrude Barber Center, the Hammermill Paper Company and Erie Magnetics.

mercyhurst History It took a century and a quarter for Erie’s class-rooms to reach the ridge crowning the city. In 1926, Mercyhurst College opened its doors on a wind-swept hill overlooking Lake Erie, just a few blocks away from the city’s southern boundary. Today, the college is in its 79th year after being founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Erie Catholic Diocese, who were led by Mother M. Borgia Egan, first president of Mercyhurst College. The heritage of Mercyhurst, however, can be traced back to Mother Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dub-lin, Ireland. From its roots on 75 acres of farmland on the bluffs overlooking Lake Erie to Mercyhurst’s modern campus, the college has undergone dynamic change. Today Mercyhurst covers six blocks and is the largest piece of unbroken real estate in Erie. More importantly, Mercyhurst has emerged as a major force in the educational landscape of the re-gion, while remaining true to its mission as a private Catholic liberal arts college in the Mercy tradition. From the beginning, Mother Borgia was determined to make Mercyhurst the “beauty spot in the diocese of Erie.” Wanting the institution to be a masterpiece of harmony, she directed that the exterior of the college be given as much atten-tion as its interior. Under her direction, the Sisters hired prominent architect F. Ferdinand Durang of Philadelphia to create Old Main. It became a mas-terpiece of English Gothic design and stateliness that has a suggestion of medieval castle in its lines. With the addition of the college gates in 1950, the Mercyhurst campus became a city landmark. In Mercyhurst history, three dates stand out above all others: Sept. 20, 1926, when the college opened; Oct. 5, 1928, when the school received its charter; and Feb. 3, 1969, when the board of trustees voted to admit the first class of men to Mercyhurst. There were three periods of rapid growth and remarkable leadership in the history of the college. Led by three outstanding presidents, they were: the

First Spring under Mother Borgia (1926-1959), who gave birth to the college and guided it through its formative years; the Second Spring spearheaded by Sister Carolyn Herrmann (1963-1972), who led Mercyhurst through the challenge of coeducation; and the Third Spring, under the driving force of Dr. William P. Garvey (1980 to 2005), who brought the college to its current vitality. In the past two decades of the Third Spring, Mercyhurst has become one of the 12 top com-prehensive colleges in the North and the second largest Mercy college in America. Between its two campuses, it has grown enrollment to a record 4,000 students, full-time faculty members number 168, endowment has increased to $20 million and its budget to more than $75.8 million. An unprecedented $40 million program of buildings and campus renovations has dramatically changed the look of Mercyhurst during the past 20 years. Old Main remains the spiritual center of a campus that has blossomed to include more than 50 structures. In fall 2002, the $7.5 million Audrey Hirt Academic Center opened on the southeast edge of campus. The much-anticipated, technology-rich classroom building was funded largely through the college’s $22.8 million capital campaign. In addition to the pace-setting growth on the main campus, in 1991 Mercyhurst purchased the 100-year-old Redemptorist Seminary in North East. Now, with 856 students enrolled in two-year and certificate programs at the 84-acre campus, con-struction has been completed for a $5 million health and safety structure on the Mercyhurst North East campus and ground will soon be broken for a $1.3 million residential complex. Recently the board of trustees is conducted a presidential search to identify the 11th president of Mercyhurst College. Dr. Thomas Gamble, the college’s vice president for academic affairs, was selected and will assume his new duties on March 1, 2006. Dr. Michael McQuillen will lead the college as interim president until then.
