    Immigrant s Day GuidelineAs discussed in the MIRA Conference Call with Team Leaders

    1) Thank you to the 20+ team leaders who joined the Wed/Thu calls from:

    Worcester Immigrant Coalition, JP Adult Learning Program, Irish International Immigrant Center, ATASK, Center for New America, EBECC, JVS, Brazilian Immigrant Center, Office of Outreach & Cultural Diversity Archdiocese of Boston , SCALE, El Centro del Cardenal, Catholic

    Charities, La Comunidad, International Institute, Centro Latino, Lutheran Social Services of Worcester, Bosnian Community Center and College Bound Dorchester.

    3) Team Leaders Logistics:

    9am-10am Arrival:

    Please ask your group to take off any metals, electronics and their coat to pass security quickly(No need to take off shoes, No need to show ID)The main entrance is the Hooker Entrance on Beacon St. Join the line to enter with your team,pass security, and take your belongings from the belt. Walk to Gardner Auditorium: take a right from security, walk to the end of the hallway and godown the stairs two floors or down the elevator to level A = Gardner Auditorium.

    Registration: Please ask your team to enter the auditorium and take a seat together (please don t leave anyseats empty, only one for their team leader). As they enter they will receive the NEWAMERICANS BUILDING POWER TOGETHER signs from volunteer in the auditorium. Makesure you give to your group your contact information in case someone gets lost.TEAM LEADER will stay at the registration table to sign up their team and receive: (1)Legislative Packets (only one per each legislator that you are planning to visit). (2) a sign with

    your organization

    s name and the area where you are coming from, to hold and show speciallyduring the Moderator s Call to Action at the end.Restrooms are on the right of the hall where the registration will happen (in front of elevators). Reserved seats in the front row, are only for announce senior citizens confirmed per group andthe speakers for the event.

    12noon Call to ACTION: visits to legislators will begin!

    To ensure a safe exit of hundreds of people from the Auditorium, please ask your team to waituntil their section of the auditorium is asked to stand up and go visit their legislators.Remember to (1) make your appointments with the legislators you want to visit, (2) Each teamleader should bring a list of the legislators, room numbers and appointment times for your ownteam use, see this great example from MAPS & BWG: CLICK HERE . (3) read and check out thelist of topics and tips in the Lobbying guide below.

Rememberto give to MIRA Staff on your way out of the State House exit/entrance the REPORT SHEET with the orange label in the corner filled out by your team during every legislative visit.

    Lobbying Guide

    MIRA is thrilled to welcome you and your group to Immigrants Day at the State House! At the end of theprogram you will be called to ACTION! to go and meet with your legislators and discuss legislations thataffect immigrant communities as well as budget items that support immigrant programs. Please choose all thetopics that are relevant to your group.

    TEAM LEADER ROLE

    Take a couple of minutes with your group to plan your visits and choose within your team:

    1. Introduction lead: choose a person in your team that will ask for the legislator and introduce the teammembers and organization.

    2. Report Sheet lead: choose a person in your team that will take notes on the Report Sheet (the onewith an orange corner) at each legislative visit, write comments and legislator responses.

    3. Story Teller: this is what legislators will remember, select from your group the people that can tellstories about why these programs should be funded or these bills should pass or be removed.

    4. Direct Ask: choose a person in your team that will make the concrete request or ASK the leg islatorssupport or clear opposition on each topic you chose to discuss.

    5. Translator: if needed, identify someone who can translate the messages to the legislators.
