For the past 30 years, the Rider University wrestling program has enjoyed national respect and recognition, thanks to head coach Gary Taylor.

Entering his 31st season, Taylor has compiled 338 Division I victories, the third highest total in the NCAAamong active coaches.

When Taylor came to Rider in 1978 to succeed the program's founder, National Wrestling Hall of Famer BarryBurtnett, he set forth a goal of bringing eastern and national recognition to wrestling on the Rider campus. Thishe has done, with a 338-196-4 dual meet record at Rider, against the toughest level of competition in the East.

The 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999 East Coast Wrestling Association Coach of the Year,Taylor has turned out 92 conference champions, including four last year at the Colonial Athletic Association Cham-pionships, and has taken 133 Broncs to the NCAA Championships, including 20 in the last four years.

Rider has won conference championships in 1984, '86, '88, '89,'90,'91,'93,'94, '96, ’97, ‘98, '99 and 2000, andfinished runner-up in the CAA twice in the last four years before a third place finish last year. The pinnacle ofTaylor's career, however, came in 1997, when the Broncs cracked the top ten in the national poll and were ranked

seventh in the nation over the final five weeks of the season by the Amateur Wrestling News. Before 1997, Taylor's Broncs were ranked as high as 15th (1982) by the Amateur Wrestling News and have finished 18th (1980), 20th (1991)

and 28th (1983) in the nation at the NCAAs. In 1989 his squad was ranked 20th in the nation in the final dual meet polls and the 1991 squadwas ranked among the top 20 nationally for most of the season.

In 1996 he escorted nine Broncs to the NCAA National Championships, where only perennial national champion Iowa had more with 10,and finished the dual meet season ranked 24th in the country. In 1993 his Broncs finished the dual meet season ranked 19th in the nation andfinished 26th in Division I at the Nationals.

In 1997, Taylor came home from Nationals with three All-Americans and added another in each of the next three seasons. To date 12 of Taylor's wrestlers, Lou DiSerafino (1980), Tim Morrison (1983), John Lucerne (1985), Adam Derengowski (1991), Leo Giel

With the return of eight starters, including two conferencechampions, the Rider University wrestling team willagain compete for a Colonial Athletic Association Title

and seek to return from nationals with an All-American or two.“We’re trying to win a conference championship in the CAA,” said

head coach Gary Taylor, “trying to have multiple All-Americans andwe’re trying to have a national champion. Those goals are still verymuch intact.”

The returnees are led by a pair of national qualifiers, CAA 184pound champion Doug Umbehauer and the CAA heavyweight cham-pion Ed Bordas.

“Doug can be as good as anybody in that weight class on any givenday,” Taylor said. “He has proved that by his past performances. He lost7-5 to the eventual national champion, he beat two All-Americans andhe lost in overtime to a third.”Umbehauer begins the 2008-09 season ranked sixth by InterMat

and eighth by Amateur Wrestling News. “Already there is a world ofdifference in him between last year and this year,” Taylor said. A two-time CAA Champion and a three-time national qualifier, Umbehauerbegins his final season with 76 career victories.Bordas sat out two years after transferring to Rider from Bing-

hamton and won the CAA title as the second seed last season, and willserve as a team captain this year. “We finally have a healthy Ed Bor-das,” Taylor said. “Basically he wrestled the last half of last season withone arm.” Bordas underwent shoulder surgery during the summer andis expected to be 100 percent this season. “He showed a lot of grit lastyear winning the CAA with an injured shoulder.”

Other key returnees include Jason Lapham, Tommy Lorenzo, FredRodgers, Rob Morrison and Mike Kessler.Lapham placed third in the CAA at 165 last season, his first year

at Rider after transferring from Penn State, and will serve as a teamcaptain this year. “Jason has to have a break out year,” Taylor said. “Hebeat some good people last year, now he needs to do that on a consis-tent basis. The CAA is very tough at 165. If he gets more consistenthe can make it to the CAA finals and get to nationals.” Lapham went7-1 in CAA duals and 3-1 in the CAA tournament after placing fourthat the prestigious Midlands Tournament last winter.Lorenzo placed fourth in the CAA at 133 last season after placing

fourth in the CAA at 125 the year before. “Tom will be one of fourwrestlers vying for the starting position at 133,” Taylor said.Rodgers won 12 matches last year as a rookie and placed sixth at

the Keystone Classic at 141. “Rodgers had a solid freshman year andbeat some good people,” Taylor said. “He had an adjustment wrestlingat 141, after he grew a lot after high school and skipped a couple ofweight classes. He’s a real student of the sport and we expect him tomake advances this year.”Kessler is a two-time NCAA qualifier who sat out last season.

Kessler placed runner-up at the 2007 CAA Championships after athird place finish in 2006. “He’s already an NCAA qualifier and henow has to take that next step,” Taylor said. “He has made it to theCAA finals and now he needs to win the conference championship. Ifwe are going to be successful, he has to have a good year.”

Kessler moves up from 149 to 157. “He has transformed his bodyinto more muscle,” Taylor said. “He’s actually leaner, even though he’sbigger. He’s doing it right. I think that will help him.”

Morrison placed fourth at the 2007 CAAs as a rookie and placedsecond at the Keystone Classic last year at 157. “Robbie could moveup to 165 this year,” Taylor said.

The newcomers are led by 174 Mike Ward, 125/133 FilbertoColon, 125 Jimmy Kirchner, 141 Aaron Nester, 133 Craig Mont-gomery, 133 Kyle Hussey, 157 Zac Cibula and 197 Tyler Smith.Ward is a transfer from Penn State who begins his first year at

Rider ranked third in the CAA at 174. Ward was twice an Ohio StateChampion. “Ward is a very gifted, talented wrestler who started somematches at Penn State,” Taylor said. “Besides winning two State Titleshe was also a State runner-up.”Colon begins his collegiate career as a member of the CAA Pre-

season All-Freshman team after compiling a 156-14 scholastic record, including a New Jersey record 112 career pins. “Filberto will be at125 or 133,” Taylor said. “He’s an outstanding freshman who placedthird in New Jersey and placed at the High School Nationals.”Kirchner was a two-time NHSCA All-American and a New Jer-

sey State Champion as a senior who was ranked sixth in the nation.“Jimmie trains hard and is a fierce competitor,” Taylor said. Kirchnercompiled a 132-26 record at Somerville High School and is a memberof the CAA Preseason All-Freshman team.

“We have more depth at the first two weights than we’ve ever had,and that was by design,” Taylor said. “We knew we had to have somepremier light weights, and Kirchner and Filberto filled that need, butwe were also fortunate that we got some other kids in there that are ac-tually very good also.”Montgomery finished among the top 12 in the 125 pound

weight class in New Jersey as a senior at Roselle Park. “He will chal-lenge at 125 or 133,” Taylor said.Matt Bradley redshirted last season and will battle at 133. “Matt

is bigger and has improved greatly,” Taylor said. “He had some goodwins as a freshman.”Hussey placed seventh in New Jersey as a senior at Parsippany

High School and compiled a scholastic career record of 103-16 at 130pounds. “Kyle is a tough kid who will also battle at 133,” Taylor said.Nester red-shirted last year after twice finishing PA State Runner-

up at Reynolds High School. “141 will be a battle between Rodgersand Nester,” Taylor said.Cibula was a four-time Wisconsin State Champion at Luxemburg-

Casco High School, winning the 152 pound title as a senior, and wasranked 21st by Wrestling USA after compiling a 195-11 scholasticrecord. “Cibula is a kid who has good potential and a future here,”Taylor said. “He will more than likely red-shirt this year.”Smith twice finished among the top three 189 pounders in New

Jersey and compiled a 123-20 career record, receiving Honorable Men-tion by Wrestling USA after placing fifth at the National High SchoolJunior Championships. “Tyler is a freshman who placed second (ju-nior year) and third (senior year) in the state,” Taylor said. “He’s wona lot of matches in high school he has good size at 6’4”.

Also returning are Nick Weaver, Mike Miller, Joe Ferber, MikeDarling and Peter Reid.Weaver begins the season ranked fifth in the CAA at 149 pounds,

after sitting out last year. A two-time New Jersey State place winner,Weaver was 1-1 in duals, 1-0 in CAA duals in 2006-07. “Weaver willbe our primary 149,” Taylor said. “He was a two-time NJ state place

BRONC ALL-AMERICANS CONFERENCE MOSTOUTSTANDING WRESTLERS

winner who could really help our team this year. He’s come back muchmore mature, he’s a very good technical wrestler and he’s a strong com-petitor.”Miller was an NCAA qualifier as a rookie and begins the season

ranked third in the CAA at 197. He won 24 matches in 2006-07 be-fore seeing limited action last season due to an injury. “Mike missedlast season at 184 with a shoulder injury and has gotten bigger andstronger and will be the 197 if healthy this year,” Taylor said. “Hisspeed will be a huge asset at that weight.”Ferber competed at two different weight classes last season for the

Broncs and won a CAA dual at 174. “Joe will battle for a spot at 174,”Taylor said.Darling won at three different weight classes for the Broncs last

season, including a CAA dual at 174. “Mike will again add depth toour line up, primarily at 184,” Taylor said.Reid saw action in four dual meets last season, including a CAA

dual and again will add depth at the heavyweight class.Seven-time defending champion Hofstra and 19th ranked Old Do-

minion are the preseason favorites to win the CAA, with Rider con-sidered a close third. “The conference is much stronger overall withseveral colleges chasing the top two, Hofstra and ODU,” Taylor said.“Rider will be one of the ones chasing, along with Binghamton,Boston U., Drexel and George Mason. All of our programs have im-

proved so it should be an interesting year to see how things shake outin the CAA Championship in March. On paper there are teams withenough overall balance to win it and there are teams that can clearlybe the spoilers because they’ve got good kids. I think if we can get ourbest team on the mat and if our freshmen come along the way we thinkthey will, we can be one of those teams who can win it.”

As far as the goals of bringing home multiple All-Americans andpossibly a national champion, Taylor feels “our best chance at a na-tional champion (Umbehauer) would have to beat a returning nationalchampion, so that may be difficult, but I do think having multipleAll-Americans is possible,” Taylor said. “Obviously, we would have tohave some kids step up. We have the kids in the room who have thatpotential.”

The schedule begins at the Stroudsburg Open and the Broncs hostLock Haven in a dual before competing in the Keystone Classic. “Theschedule is a little bit different this year in that some of the big schoolswere not coming East, so we don’t have that element to our homeschedule,” Taylor said. “We will see some of them at the Virginia Dualsand the Midlands. We are bringing Lehigh back to our gym and it hasbecome a great rivalry. I believe they will be nationally ranked whichwill be an opportunity for us. The last time we met here it was a sellout and a great match. We are hoping for the same this year.”
