UPCOMING SERVICESFROM RABBI LAZARUS-KLEIN

In August of 2017, Baltimore Jewish philanthropist Lee M. Hendler had reached a breaking point. There was a whole segment of the Jewish community being left out of Jewish life. These proud individuals have been instrumental in Jewish life since biblical times, and yet, somehow synagogue after synagogue, federation after federation, community after community, had left them off of

the agenda altogether. In a conversation with lifelong Jewish communal professional, David Raphael, she decided it was time to take action. And, in no time at all the Jewish Grandparents Network was born, the first national Jewish organization dedicated to the needs of Jewish grandparents.

How could this be that we had forgotten about Bubbe and Papa? We simply had taken them for granted, never officially recognizing their vital role in Jewish life. And, thus, Lee, or “Gromzy” as her six grandchildren affectionately call her, along with David (Zayde to his granddaughter Bina), decided it was time to find out more about what it meant to be a Jewish grandparent today in America.

What they found out may surprise you. First, not all Jewish grandparents knew a lot about being Jewish. Second, not all Jewish grandparents knew a lot about being a grandparent. Assistance was needed. While some twenty percent of Jewish grandparents are what they label as Joyful Grandparents, dutifully dedicated to their grandchildren’s Jewish lives, there was another twenty percent on the other side of the spectrum, something they called Detached Grandparents, barely part of their grandchildren’s lives at all. In between, were the Wistful and Faithful Grandparents, ones who wanted to be more involved, but for whatever reason were not.

When David Raphael came to visit Buffalo in November, he told us it is this middle section that we need to pay more attention to. After all, grandparents are by far the biggest funders of our Jewish institutions, and child care providers for our Jewish children, and we need as many of them on board as possible. With this in mind, I would like to dedicate January to Jewish grandparents at Shir Shalom. After all, this is the month (on January 11th) we read in the Torah about Jacob’s reunion with his grandchildren, Joseph’s children Ephraim and Manasseh, who he offers a blessing at the end of his life. If you have a Jewish grandparent, or you are a Jewish grandparent, take time to celebrate your many blessings. It is something our forefather Jacob recognized and that we should as well.

B’Shalom, If you need guidance, advice, or if you just want to schmooze, Rabbi Alex and Cantor Frank are available every Thursday from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. Call Rabbi Alex at 716-308-4558 or Cantor Frank at 845-596-5142 to make an appointment.

CONGREGATION SHIR SHALOM ST RRY NEWS

Although December was a short month at Religious School, it was an exciting one! Each grade spent time focusing on Hanukkah. This year, the Holiday curriculum is presented to the students in three parts. First, students are asked what they already know about the Holiday. The teacher tweaks any

information. The students are then introduced to their assigned grade Holiday focus and continue to learn or review the necessary blessings. I am so excited to share that thanks to Harvey Horowitz, Marc Slonim and Cindi Mikulik, our school’s T’fillah curriculum is now online. Students (and parents) can now view and hear prayers on the Shir Shalom website under the school’s tab. I encourage all of you to check it out and we would welcome ANY feedback. Thanks!! The highlight in December was our wonderful Hanukkah program. Thank you to all the staff, parents and volunteers who made it so successful! Please mark your calendars for Saturday, February 1st at 7PM for the Wine-Tasting Havdalah. STAY TUNED AND YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!

It’s official, Congregation Shir Shalom receives the prestigious “Better Together” Grant, an initiative that encourages students and senior citizens to develop intergenerational Jewish relationships. The nationwide program aims to help students foster their own Jewish identities while connecting them with living history, creating a space in which an oral tradition can bring people together. The grant will allow students in the sixth and seventh grade classes of the religious school to meet regularly with residents at The Amberleigh. During the first program on Friday, November 29th, students helped decorate the facility for Hanukkah.

WOMEN OF SHIR SHALOM

MEN’S GROUP

“A man who remembers everything and a woman who remembers nothing…” These are the nonagenarian protagonists of Live a Little, the new novel by Man Booker Prize-winning author, Howard Jacobson.

Beryl Dusinberry, “the Princess,” is a vain, acerbic woman who fills index cards and harangues her much-put-upon immigrant carers in order to retain, and at times embroider, the memories of her glory days. Shimi Carmelli, cursed with hypermnesia, an unusually acute memory that will not let him forget the small shames and humiliations of his childhood, practices cartomancy (divination using playing cards) in a Chinese restaurant.

LIBRARY CORNER

The speaker at the January Men’s Group meeting will be Dr. Gale Burstein, the Erie County Commissioner of Health. Dr. Burstein will discuss how the opioid epidemic evolved, who is affected, and how Erie County is able to bend the overdose curve.

The opioid epidemic has had a significant impact in Western New York. After a 2016 peak of 301 Erie County opioid related overdose deaths, in 2017 Erie County lead the nation in bending the curve in decreasing opioid related overdose deaths; a trend continuing in 2019.

Dr. Burstein was trained as a pediatrician and is currently Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the UB Jacobs School of Medicine. The Buffalo News writes, “Gale Burstein cut her medical teeth testing malaria drugs and fighting AIDS in Africa. She wrote national guidelines for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. And her research on chlamydia rates among poor Baltimore teens landed her on the front page of JAMA, the flagship medical research journal of the American Medical Association.”

The talk will be on Sunday morning, January 12th at 9:15 AM. Both men and women are encouraged to attend. Bagels and lox will be served. Please email the Men’s Group to RSVP.

We are still accepting dues payments! Simply send or drop off a check made out to “CSS Men’s Group” to the Temple. Dues are $36.

For information about any of our events, please contact Dan Kester at 536-5628 or via email.

Erie County Commissioner of Health, Gale Burstein, speaking on the Opioid Epidemic

It takes almost two-thirds of the book for this unlikely pair to find one another, but when they come together at the funeral of Shimi’s brother and discover that they are neighbors, they slowly begin to feel their way to a real relationship in which their flaws and oddities complement one another and provide them with something that both have been missing for their entire lives.

Live a Little may not be for everyone; its characters, particularly Beryl, are not always sympathetic and its structure, much of it mirroring her thinking, can be somewhat confusing, but it is refreshing to find older characters as the subjects of their own stories and as real, however flawed, human beings who are able to grow and change even in their nineties.

Live a Little can be obtained through the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system.

“CARE-RING”

Planned Giving provides people who have been synagogue members an opportunity to recognize CSS. A Planned Gift can be as simple as a bequest, or more complex, providing both income and tax advantages for the donor.

You also can endow our future by naming rights. Various areas in the building can be named with your family’s name, a legacy which would last forever and also be enjoyed by you today.

If you would like more information, please contact Joanne Marquisee, Executive Director, at 633-8877.

Please share your pictures with us!

Do you have a picture of an event that you attended at temple; a picture of a family Shabbat you had at home; an interesting picture from a meeting; or other photos that you’d like to share with us?

If so, please send them to: [email protected]

Can you help a fellow congregant with a ride to Temple?

We have members who are no longer able to drive but would like to come to Temple for services and other events. If you can provide a congregant with a ride to Temple, please call the CSS Office at 633-8877. Thank you for this mitzvah!

Student Community Service Hours Available

Students, 16 years of age or older, can receive school community service credit by working in the kitchen for Bingo on Monday nights. Contact Chris Cohan at [email protected] if interested.

Any Reason is a Good Reason to Sponsor an Oneg!

Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat after Friday Erev Shabbat Services is a lovely way to honor someone you love, to celebrate an upcoming simcha, or to remember a loved one in a special way. For information, please contact Joanne Marquisee at 633-8877 or [email protected].

The CSS Chesed Caring Committee wants you to know that we take care of our members in a very special way; namely, by providing a meal for families who: have a loved one just returning home from the hospital; are experiencing the birth of a new baby; or are observing Shiva. All we need is a call from someone in the family to let us know that one of the above situations exists, and we will provide a delicious meal for the immediate family.

We also are looking for volunteers who would be able to pick up the meals and deliver them to the recipient’s home. This does not have to be a long-term commitment. The more volunteers we have, the fewer times you will be called to help.

We recognize that some members, who are unable to leave their homes for one reason or another or who live alone, may appreciate a phone call once a week from another caring congregant. We are reaching out to both those who would like to hear from someone, to chat, to visit on the phone, and those who are willing to make the phone calls.

Please let us know if you want this service, or if you are able to provide this service. We will explain the details. It’s easy, convenient, and it’s a MITZVAH. All you need is a phone and a few minutes a week.

To request a meal be provided to a member or to volunteer, please call Adrienne Crandall at 875-7061,

Climate Change and Colder Wintersby Joseph Morris

ENVIRONMENTAL COLUMN

I came across an interesting article about climate change/global warming in the December 2019 issue of the magazine, Astronomy. It was discussing something called Rossby Waves, a weather/climate phenomenon in Earth’s atmosphere. In relation to this phenomenon, the article contained a good description of why global warming is leading to colder winters in the US. The idea that global warming is leading to colder winters may seem counterintuitive. After all, the whole idea of climate change is that the Earth is getting warmer, isn’t it? That is true, but the temperature increase is only the average across the globe. However, the Earth’s climate is extremely complicated, and, therefore, temperature rises in one region may lead to cooling in other regions.Which brings us to this article. The author points out that because of the Earth’s axial tilt, different regions of the Earth receive different amounts of energy from the sun. Furthermore, because ice is more reflective than land or oceans, i.e., it reflects sunlight and absorbs less energy, the arctic regions soak up less heat than the equator. Therefore, the poles should be about 45F colder than they are now, and the equator about 25F warmer, rendering more parts of the Earth uninhabitable. The earth’s climate and weather system prevents this from happening by a circulation of air that occurs from the warmer tropics to the cooler poles and then back again. This circulation serves as a climate moderator. The Earth’s rotation further influences the atmosphere to become divided into equatorial, midlatitude, and polar regions, each separated by the famous jet streams. This is where climate change comes in. As the ice at the polar caps melt due to warming from climate change, the polar regions become even warmer because there is less ice to reflect the sun’s rays. Therefore, the equator-to-pole flow balance is upset and the equatorial to polar circulation decreases and becomes more unstable. One consequence is that the jet stream that separates the polar region from the midlatitude region can come further south, bringing with it colder air. This is the so-called polar vortex that we’ve been experiencing in recent years. So, when someone, particularly one who may be a climate change skeptic, makes the comment, “proof that climate change is a hoax is that our winters are becoming colder,” you know the truth. This also illustrates that climate change effects are more complex and far-reaching than just warming. Many of these impacts may seem counterintuitive, and it takes science to decipher them. I also find it interesting that the author titled this article “Watching Rome Burn.” Fiddles, anyone?
