Components Used

RFID Tags / Cards: An RFID Tag is made up of an integrated antenna and memory. Information could be written and rewritten on the Tag Memory. There is also an unique ID for a TAG which is written on a TAG during manufacturing, it’s known as the EPC (Electronic Product Code). This Tag is enclosed in plastic.

Reader: An RFID Reader is used to read information written on an RFID Tag. The reader has antennas that emits radio waves, the Tag responds by sending back data stored in it to the reader.

Host Computer: It is used to write or read data to and from the tags. It stores and evaluates the obtained data and links the transceiver to applications.

Types of RFID Tracking Hardware

Fixed Mount Readers

Fixed Mount readers are mounted in zones / implementation where the tracking has to be automated.

The reader will be on all the time and would read any UHF RFID tags that are available within its read range.

The Readers can be connected via network, and could also be used to trigger Visual and Audible Alert by connecting a tower lamp or buzzer along with it.

The Fixed Mount RFID Readers can be used in the following ways at a Library

Exit Sensors: We can use the RFID Reader as a entry / exit gate sensor. The reader reads the information on the tag(s) within its read range and communicates that information to a server, the server, after checking the “circulation” database, provides an audible alert if the material is not properly checked out.

Types of RFID Tracking Hardware

The implementation would consist of

• UHF Fixed Mount RFID Reader.

• UHF Outdoor Antenna.

• Tower Lamp with Hooter for Visual and Audible Alert Notification.

• Portal which houses the Reader and Antenna and through which people are required to pass.

Hand Held Readers

The Hand Held readers are used in scenarios where the process is semi automated, eg: taking stocks of the inventory. The hand held reader would be carried by the user, the device would be connected to the network via Wi-Fi to provide data and perform validations in real time.

The Hand Held RFID Readers can be used in the following ways at a Library

Inventory Verification: The major advantage of using a Hand Held RFID device is their ability to scan books on the shelves without tipping them out or removing them. A Hand Held inventory reader can be moved rapidly across a shelf of books to read all the uinque identification information, which is then sent to the server and could be used for the following requirements: -

Inventory AuditTo spot mis-shelved books.Search for individual books requested.

Desktop ReadersThe Hand Held readers are used in mainly in scenarios where the tag related information has to be accessed via a desktop, eg: Registering the tag to a book, or at the check in and out counter to record which book is taken out or checked in.

The Desktop RFID Readers can be used in the following ways at a Library

Tag Registration: To register a tag to a book.

Self Check-In Station: Used to check in library materials without staff assistance.

Self Check-out Station: Used to check out library materials without staff assistance.

Check-in and out Counters: Used to check in and out with staff assistance.

External Book Return: It works the same way as the Self Check-in station, when the library is closed, the user can identify himself/ herself & drop the book at a counter in the drop slot.

Note: The system shall be configured to provide receipts to the users for all automated transactions.
