Remembering our teacher and friend Terry Holt SenseiOn January 12th this year, Terry Holt-sensei passed away. In kendo we have the motto “kõken-chiai”,which loosely translates as “loving your fellow man through the application of the sword”. To me, thissums up Terry Holt-sensei’s approach to life. Terry will be remembered as one of the founding fathersof British kendo, and one of the first few to gain 7-dan, but above all it was his generosity and kindnessto others that set him apart.Terry was born in London in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. He lived with hismother and sisters in West Kensington. At the age of seven he discovered a bomb detonator whichexploded, causing the loss of his right index finger. In spite of this, he eagerly started judo classes atthe age of 10, training regularly until he was bitten by the kendo bug in the late 1960s and joined NenrikiDojo in London. He met his wife Gill on a holiday in Cornwall. They married in1959, settling in Southall, West London. Terry spent the rest ofhis life in the housed he bought with Gill, raising threechildren, Christine, Wendy and David, and proudly becominggrandfather to seven, and great-grandfather to 10. Terry workedas an electrical engineer, taking on a wide range of projectsfrom appliance repair to sound and lighting for concerts. In 1968 he became one of the founding members of MumeishiKendo Club, establishing the club with the guidance of FujiiOkimitsu and assuming the role of kancho in 1971. The club thrived and today has sister clubs inMelbourne, Tel-Aviv and Tehran. Terry hosted the first Mumeishi 3s Taikai in 1979. This event is now inits 43rd year and continues to attract around 300 competitors from clubs around the globe.Terry represented Great Britain at the 2nd World Kendo Championships in Los Angeles. As GreatBritain’s only competitor, he shared a room with Japan’s Chiba Masahi-sensei. He was part of thewinning G.B. team in the 1974 European Championships. His career within the British Kendo Teamembraced a number of key roles, including National Team Coach, a place on the organising committeefor the 3rd WKC, and he was Chair of the British Kendo Association between 1980 and 1981.

The Mumeishi Juniors, never too young to start kendo!

Remembering our teacher and friend Terry Holt Sensei continuedIn 1998 he was presented with the Japan Festival Award forfurthering understanding of Japanese culture in the U.K.In his retirement Terry travelled extensively, teachingseminars in Europe, visiting the Mumeishi sister clubs, andtrying for 8-dan in Tokyo. He actively kept in touch withnumerous kendo friends around the globe.Terry always took the view that kendo teaching is alsolearning, and worked side by side with his students. The lasttime I saw him just before his illness when he was happilytaking points from people during jigeiko while helping themimprove their kendo. Although a stickler for correct kendoand etiquette, he was always much happier to encouragerather than criticise, and had the ability to make you feelgood about yourself even if you had just failed a grading orlost a shiai. His kindness did not stop in the dojo. The home that he shared with Gill and their family has always beena kendo open house. Visiting kenshi and their friends and relatives in need of a bed or the night or longer, have always been welcome. Terry taught me a number of valuable lessons, not just about kendo but also about life. He was testimonyto the fact that life is for living, to the full, to the very end. He taught me about the value of friendship andthat the principles of kendo go beyond the walls of the dojo.He will be missed by kendo friends around the world

At Mumeishi kendo club's junior section 5 to 18 year olds enjoy practising kendo.Children have great international experiences during kendo trips across Europe whichwe organise two to three times a year. We hope that in our dojo, that represents the diversityof London, children can learn spirit and discipline through practising kendo together.
