Psychiatric/Mental Health Services Technician Tech Prep Consortium

The purpose of the consortium is to more fully develop the academic and career/technical skills of secondary and postsecondary education students who enroll in the Health and Human Services Academy/Career Pathway/Program of Study by providing coherent and rigorous content that is aligned with challenging academic standards and the relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for further education and careers in Psychiatric Medicine, particularly as Psychiatric Technicians.

Consortium Goals

Broaden the existing career pathway between Andrew Hill High School and Mission College.

Develop linkage activities and materials that will increase program enrollment.

Provide students with skills needed for entry into high demand careers.

Establish a coherent sequence of courses to ensure learning of core academic and technical competencies.

Implement program specific articulation to provide advanced placement.

Insure a comprehensive industry-wide plan of business/industry speakers, field trips, and presentations is in place.

Work-based experiences and student organizations are active and on-going.

Psychiatric/Mental Health Services Technician Tech Prep Consortium

Develop and implement an approved high quality, industry-validated CTE Program of Study in the Psychiatric/Mental Health pathway.

Present a minimum of two professional development activities beyond the local level.

Share the program of study and other work developed with consortium members in the local area and region.

Post the program of study as a demonstration site on the CTE On-Line.

Develop an test an end-of-course assessment in the pathway identified and include an industry certification or license.

Pathway Identified

Demand for diverse mental health workforce is increasing.

Prop 63, Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) in 2004 has infused funds into the mental health industry – increased job demand.

New Recovery Model will invoke clients and family members to part of the mental health services delivery system.

Ability to recruit from the local diverse population.

PT program already offered at Mission College.

Factors Influencing Need for Psych Techs

Stress related conditions exacerbated by loss of employment/difficulty finding employment.

The number of returning veterans of Middle East wars.

www.medscape.com Nov. 6, 2007 reported A minimum of 300,000 psychiatric casualties are

expected to result among the veterans. High rate of PTSD in returning Iraq War Veterans Skilled workers need to be prepared to deal with

physical and emotional needs, and limit use of alcohol and stimulants.

Employment Data

Economic Development Department of the Greater Bay Area report Psychiatric Technicians is expected to require 59 new and replacement workers annually.

2010 - National Survey by U.S. Dept. of Labor by Georgia State University found the demand for psychiatric aides in residential facilities will rise in response to the increase in elderly and mentally disabled adults.

Job growth could also be affected by changes in governmental funding of programs for the mentally ill.

California labor data trend for Psychiatric Technicians reports that employment form 2008-2016 will increase by 15% overall.

Wages for California Psychiatric Technicians were reported in a 2008 study by the state of California Wages division to range from $32,900-$65,000/yr. 9/20/2010

Review Course

Develop and test an end-of-course assessment.Many students request a review course for

boards.End-of-program review course and

assessment will be beneficial to the success of students on the California licensure exam.

Increase pass rates on first attempt.Comparison test course will be developed. Graphic representation of the differential will

be included in presentation and reports.
