Egenera needed an enterprise class platform to host their wholesale cloud service —Xterity. They turned to longtime partners Fujitsu and Brocade to create a scalable infrastructure solution that could be easily deployed as well as supplying the reliability and performance expected by enterprises as they moved to cloud solutions for their IT services.

The result is the Xterity Cloud POD, an integrated, entry-level solution that can scale to thousands of servers within a single POD. The solution fully addresses processing performance, storage capabilities, networking solutions, multi-tenancy, self-service, security and overall management.

The overall architecture of the Xterity Cloud POD was developed to deliver a sustainable cloud resource that was equally adaptable to the needs of customers and market demands.

Each element of the architecture is critical to the customer experience. As a result it also needs to be dependable and to satisfy the cost savings expected from cloud technologies. The ability to scale seamlessly and to adjust the cloud capabilities without interruption was necessary to meet the cost targets. Translating the architecture into a solution s resulted in the Xterity POD using the following products for the architectural elements:

Internet Connectivity Brocade ICX 6610

Cloud Management Platform

Egenera PAN Cloud Director

Egenera PAN Manager

Brocade vRouter 5600

VMware vSphere

FUJITSU PRIMERGY RX2540

Cloud Compute Fabric Brocade VDX6740

Cloud Compute PlatformFUJITSU PRIMERGY

CX400/CX2550

Cloud Storage Platform FUJITSU ETERNUS DX200

The Xterity POD is capable of supporting up to 44 physical servers that can be provisioned as “bare metal” servers or as hosts for virtual servers and over 151TB of available storage supporting the servers. But, in order to right size the environment and meet operational cost models, each Xterity POD starts with an entry configuration that can support about 1000 small configuration virtual servers (1 x vCPU/1GB memory/50GB storage). Assembled into a standard 42U computer rackframe, the Xterity POD becomes the scalable entity. As capacity exceeds the single POD, additional Xterity POD’s are added to ensure scalability.

Brocade

Egenera partnered with Brocade to integrate its products within the self-service portal of the Xterity cloud and to enable orchestration of hybrid solutions in a cloud environment. Customers can easily “drag and drop” catalog items including network resources and firewall policies to construct their workload environments. This collaboration has enabled Xterity to offer MSP’s and enterprises an easy to use IaaS cloud that becomes their own private datacenter. The Brocade VDX products provide a compute fabric for a fully converged and complete network orchestrated by Egenera’s PAN Manager making the Xterity POD a truly software defined network while delivering the flexibility to quickly provision any topology needed.

Brocade technologies that enabled the Xterity Cloud Include:

• Brocade VDX 6740— Cloud Fabric

• Brocade ICX6610 —Internet Connectivity and Management Network

• Brocade vRouter 5600—Firewall technology

Fujitsu

Egenera collaborated with Fujitsu to develop technology that enabled rackservers to be managed like blade servers. The FUJITSU PRIMERGY rackservers with the FUJITSU Cloud Adaptor for PAN Solutions enable provisioning of “bare metal” servers with the flexibility of virtual servers to enable users of the Xterity self-service portal to easily create hybrid workload solutions with both physical servers and virtual servers. Egenera also leverages Fujitsu storage technologies to provide a flexible, reliable and scalable storage environment. With all servers configured as stateless—no local disks—Xterity Cloud takes full advantage of the flexibility, performance and reliability of a network storage topology utilizing FCoE for all compute fabric connectivity. Xterity also leverages the FUJITSU ETERNUS automatic tiering and QoS functions as the basis for the storage options offered to end users.
