4T40/45EFront Seal Leak After InstallSaturnAugust, 2009

4T40/45EFront Seal Leak After Install

Complaint:2000 & up Saturn models with the 3.0L engine and 4T40/45E transaxle with a severe front seal leak after install.

Cause:Incorrect converter application installed. Both 4T45E converter applications look the same with the hub facing up side by side (Figure 1) ID code FLKF. The correct 4T40/45E torque converter for the Saturn vehicles requires thicker bolt pads and a longer pilot (Figure 2). Using the wrong converter will not extend the hub far enough into the front seal allowing oil to leak into the converter housing.

Correction:Install the correct converter with thicker pads and longer pilot.

AX4S, 4F50NErratic Engine or Transmission Operation, Random Codes

Some 1999-2003 Ford Windstars, 2004-2007 Ford Freestars and Mercury Montereys may experience erratic engine performance or transmission operation. Symptoms may include but are not limited to various diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s), harsh or delayed transmission shifts or engagements, no reverse engagement, engine overheating, engine misfi res or rough idle. These symptoms may be caused by water intrusion into the PCM or water contamination of the PCM connector. This is usually caused by water running off the cowl area and saturating the PCM. It is recommended to seal off the cowl area to prevent water run-off into the PCM area. If the PCM is contaminated with water internally, PCM replacement is recommended. If the PCM is notcontaminated internally, clean and reseal the PCM connector.

E4OD, 4R100 & 4R70WErratic Speedometer Operation, MIL Illuminated1997-98 Ford F150, F250, Expedition & 98 Navigator 4X4’s OnlyAugust, 2009

E4OD, 4R100 & 4R70WErratic Speedometer Operation, MIL Illuminated, Code P0503 (VSS) May be Stored in PCMWhile working on a 1997-1998 Ford F150, F250, Expedition and 1998 Lincoln Navigator, you may experience erratic transmission operation and/or erratic speedometer operation. The malfunctionindicator lamp may be illuminated and code P0503 (VSS) may be stored in the PCM. A loose speedometer drive gear, located on the transfer case output shaft, may be causing an erratic VSS signal to the PCM and the instrument cluster. Replacing the speedometer drive gear with a tighter fi tting new design speedometer drive gear will repair this concern. Part # F7TZ-17285-AA.

5R110/TorqshiftPressure Switch Inspection

When working on the solenoid body always remove and inspect pressure switches. Early solenoid body have fi ve pressure switches and on the late solenoid body only the direct clutch retained the hole with a plastic dummy plug installed. Carefully remove and inspect pressure switches to avoid a pressure loss. New plugs are available in the after market
