The EDGE Center

Composite materials are used in many industries including aerospace, energy, medical, automotive, marine, and recreation. The expanding use of composites can be seen in the airplanes such as the Boeing Dreamliner 787 and are integral to space exploration including cryogenic tanks, space telescopes, and launch vehicles.

San Jacinto College’s composite program provides students with a background and usage of composites materials, industries, and products. Course topics will include:

• Safe storage and handling of composite materials

• Types of composites materials, metals, and resins and material compatibility

• Techniques including curing, vacuum bagging, honeycomb core structure, and layout methods

• Tools and equipment used with composite materials such as the bonders, ovens, autoclaves, and vacuum tables

• Drilling/cutting techniques

• Inspection and testing techniques used with composite materials

• Maintenance and repair of composite components

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to identify the unique characteristics of composites and apply the fundamental and practical knowledge necessary to build and maintain composite structures.

San Jacinto College’s aerospace structures program provides students with a background and information on various aviation and aerospace structures. Course topics will include:

• Aerospace systems (including flight control, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, landing, electrical, fuel, avionics, door and window, and more)

• Metals technology

• Drilling and riveting

• Sealants

• Wiring, cables, and bonding

• Sensors

• Installation

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to identify the characteristics of aerospace structures and its fundamental systems.
