WE CAN NO LONGER DENY IT: THE ENVIRONMENT IS SUFFERING BECAUSE OF OUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION.

WHY Green heat?

We are all looking for SMARTER WAYS TO MANAGE ENERGY. Buildings are big consumers of energy and the majority of that consumption is for heating and hot water, so our sector has a great responsibility to innovate. With renewable energy and effi cient heating and cooling technologies, OUR BUILDINGS CAN EMIT UP TO 60% LESS CO2.

The European Union helps carry the load by gradually making energy consumption standards stricter. And rightly so, because with a perfect energy balance, a modern house uses less than a tenth of what was possible 30 years ago.

Modern heating technologies and renewable energy are crucially important in order to achieve the ambitious objectives. To get the full benefi ts, such technologies need low temperature systems. That’s where the green heat of Henrad ECO radiators comes in.

The HEAT TRANSFER from a traditional radiator is usually 80% by convection and 20% by radiation. The comfortable feeling of warmth from solar radiation is therefore less present in a traditional radiator, but the ECO radiator changes that.

The photos below show that the heat transfer by radiation increases signifi cantly in the ECO radiator. Especially the greater amount of radiation from the front panel is considered very pleasant.

With CONVECTION HEAT, the air in a room is heated as air fl ows pass over heating elements. The heated air rises, cools and falls again down the walls. The cooled air is then warmed up again by the heating system.

In RADIANT HEAT, infra-red radiation is emitted to heat objects in the room directly, independently of air fl ows such as wind or draughts. Radiant heat gives the entire room including furniture, walls and people, a completely even temperature. These objects in turn yield their heat to the room, making it feel very comfortable. The best example of radiant heat is the sun. Standing in the sun, you feel the radiation on your skin, which immediately makes you feel warmer, even if the nearby ambient air in the shade is not cooler than the air directly in the sun. The only difference felt is the radiant heat.

These measurements show that, at a nominal mass fl ow of 50% (good for more than 90% of the nominal emission of heat), the radiation capacity of the Type 21 and Type 22 ECO radiators increase by a factor of 1.5 compared with a traditional radiator.

* Test conditions: radiator type 22 (height = 600 mm, length = 1,000 mm) at 70/55/20°C.

HEAT CAN BE TRANSFERRED IN DIFFERENT WAYS: THROUGH CONDUCTION, CONVECTION OR RADIATION. HOMES ARE HEATED MAINLY BY CONVECTION AND/OR RADIANT HEAT.

MORE RADIATION =More comfort + lower costs!

DEPENDING ON TYPE AND HEIGHT, THE ECO RADIATOR EMITS UP TO 50% MORE RADIANT HEAT.

IN THIS WAY, ECO RADIATORS YIELD AN ENERGY SAVING OF AT LEAST 6%, WITHOUT REDUCING THE PERCEIVED TEMPERATURE.

AN ECO RADIATOR REACHES A SURFACE TEMPERATURE ON THE FRONT PANEL THAT IS UP TO 54% HIGHER AFTER 2 MINUTES AND A HIGHER FINAL TEMPERATURE UNDER FULL LOAD, THEREBY EMITTING UP TO 50% MORE RADIANT HEAT.

The increased radiant heat is a direct consequence of the increased mean surface temperature of the front panel. An external test laboratory performed exhaustive tests on the ECO radiators, with the results shown below.

The front panel of the ECO radiator has a mean temperature of 43°C after 2 minutes and 50°C after 3 minutes. At the same times, the front panel of a traditional radiator has mean temperatures of 28°C and 35.7°C respectively.

Just like with the sun, the perceived temperature with the ECO radiator is higher than with a traditional radiator. In other words, at a constant perceived temperature of 20°C, the increased radiant heat from the ECO radiator allows the thermostat to be a few degrees lower.*

According to the EN 12831 Standard, in practice there are only a few days in a year (on average ten) on which radiators use their maximum heat emission for a longer period of time. ECO radiators provide additional benefits even during these limited number of days of prolonged full load.

After the ECO radiator has stabilised (i.e. is in full load), its front panel is up to 4% warmer than a traditional radiator.

* According to the BDH (Bundesindustrieverband Deutschland), setting your thermostat a few degrees lower means an energy saving of 6%.

IN ADDITION TO MORE RADIANT HEAT AND THE HIGHER MEAN TEMPERATURE OF THE FRONT PANEL, THERE ARE VARIOUS FACTORS THAT REDUCE THE ENERGY BILL CONSIDERABLY IF YOU CHOOSE AN ECO RADIATOR.

FASTER HEATING-UP PROCESSLess CO2

THE ECO RADIATOR’S FRONT PANEL REACHES ITS MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE UP TO 23% FASTER THAN THAT OF A TRADITIONAL RADIATOR. IN OTHER WORDS: THE ECO RADIATOR’S FRONT PANEL IS ALREADY AT ITS MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE WHILE A TRADITIONAL RADIATOR STILL NEEDS A LONG TIME TO WARM UP.

Thanks to its unique fl ow pattern, the ECO radiator’s HEATING-UP TIME is signifi cantly shorter than that of a traditional radiator.

The DIRECT FLOW of water into the upward channel in the front panel. In a traditional radiator, the hot water fi rst has to go through a series of rising channels before it is spread over the front and back panels.

The further DISTRIBUTION of the hot water: the hot water is spread evenly across the other channels of the front panel. A unique system then takes it to the back panel, where it is also spread over all the water channels.

The front panel of the ECO radiator reaches its maximum temperature of 62.5°C after 8.5 minutes. At that moment, the front panel of a traditional radiator is at only 59.3°C and its maximum temperature is only reached after 11 minutes, by which time the ECO radiator will have already been at its maximum temperature for over 2.5 minutes.

* Test conditions: type 22 radiator (height = 600 mm, length = 1,000 mm) at 70/55/20°C.

BY FURTHER LIMITING ENERGY LOSSES, THE ECO RADIATOR SUCCEEDS IN INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE HEATING SYSTEM EVEN MORE.

FEWER LOSSESHigher effi ciency!

Not only is the front panel hotter during the entire heating-up process, even after stabilisation, but the BACK PANEL IS COLDER, which is just as important. Because the back panel usually faces an outside wall, there is a possible loss of radiation through the wall.

The graph below shows the mean temperature of the back panel at specifi c moments during the heating-up process.

After 180 seconds, the mean temperature of the ECO radiator’s back panel is 25.6°C, whereas a traditional radiator’s is already 35°C.

The ECO radiator’s values after 5 and 7 minutes are 37.6°C and 47.8°Crespectively, whereas the results for a traditional radiator are 48.1°C and 57.2°C.

The graph below shows the situation for both radiators after the heating system has stabilised.

THERE IS STILL A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MEAN TEMPERATURES OF THE BACK PANELS OF THE TWO TYPES OF RADIATOR AFTER STABILISATION. THE TEMPERATURE OF THE ECO RADIATOR’S BACK PANEL IS UP TO 7% LOWER COMPARED WITH THAT OF A TRADITIONAL RADIATOR.

TRADITIONAL RADIATOR ECO RADIATOR

In a traditional radiator, there is hardly any difference in temperature between the front and back panels. The radiant heat is emitted to the wall, and in the case of an outside wall, this heat is lost through it and energy loss occurs.

IN THE CASE OF THE ECO RADIATOR, THERE IS A WIDE DIFFERENCE IN TEMPERATURE BETWEEN THE TWO PANELS, WHICH CAN INCREASE TO OVER 12%.

THE THERMOSTATIC VALVE IS FACTORY-SET IN THE ECO RADIATOR IN RELATION TO THE SIZE OF THE RADIATOR, WHICH ENSURES OPTIMAL OUTPUT AND EFFICIENCY.

PRE-SETThermostatic valve

In practice, OPTIMAL HYDRAULIC SETTING OF THE HEATING INSTALLATION is very important, certainly in view of rising energy costs.

The planner or architect uses software to correctly calculate all the necessary parameters (mass fl ows or throughput, couplers and connectors, valve settings, etc.) for the hydraulic settings of the installation in new-build housing, which are then implemented by the installer.

A lot of this information gets lost as time passes, and adjustments and/or repairs made in the meantime make fi nding the correct settings in the event of restoration more complicated.

A more PRACTICALLY-ORIENTED SOLUTION is to fi t the

radiators with a Kv pre-set valve in the factory. The principle is relatively simple: the valve ensures that at a given pressure difference the correct quantity of hot water or mass fl ow passes through the radiator.

The PROPER PRE-SETTING OF THE VALVE means that the radiator’s heat output is close to its nominal value. The valves in the ECO radiator are set so that the throughput in the radiator is equal to or a little higher than the nominal throughput. A minimum of extra throughput gives the heating system suffi cient or a little more power, and the situation is brought close to its nominal or ideal state.

Increasing the throughput even more, which happens with an unregulated valve, gives relatively little extra power. This could cause other radiators to get insuffi cient hot water and therefore be unable to heat the room.

Factory pre-setting is possible because radiator dimensions do not differ infi nitely. To be certain that small radiators with a low heat output and limited water content can be adjusted optimally, HENRAD HAS DECIDED TO USE TWO TYPES OF VALVE:• a fi ne adjustment valve (Heimeier 4369 with a yellow top)

especially for small radiators• a standard valve (Heimeier 4368) with 4 different pre-sets

(white, red, black and blue) for normal to large radiators

At Henrad, the KV SETTING OF RADIATORS IS SHOWN UNEQUIVOCALLY AND BY THE COLOUR:

Furthermore, Henrad valves are continuously adjustable (with tapered groove), which means that the mass fl ow can be controlled very accurately and there is less sensitivity to faults. This is in contrast to other valves that are diffi cult or impossible to align accurately and can become clogged because of impurities (such as chalk) in the water, which leads to their working poorly and to insuffi cient heating of the radiator.

The benefi ts of pre-setting are considerable:• time-saving during installation.• optimal water throughput in the radiator.• higher system effi ciency as a result of lower return temperatures.

The BDH (Bundesindustrieverband Deutschland) has shown that factory pre-set valves have an extremely favourable effect on the hydraulic balance of a heating installation.

THIS GIVES ENERGY SAVINGS OF UP TO 6% COMPARED WITH NON-BALANCED SYSTEMS.

Furthermore, if pump consumption is taken into account, then a heating system with factory pre-set valves can give additional savings of up to 20% in the electricity the pump uses.

The factory settings of the pre-installed thermostatic valves were determined on the basis of the following preconditions:• heat output at 70/55/20°C ( ∆t = 15°C ).• differential pressure ∆p = 100 mbar.• control difference 1K.

In case of abnormal preconditions, the valve can be adjusted manually and precisely (or be replaced if necessary) through the pre-setting tables 4368 and 4369 (with setting key art. T1622). In one-pipe systems the valve should be adjusted to position 8.

PRESSURE DROP DIAGRAMStandard valve (Art. 4368)

VALVE RADIATORS WITHOUT CONNECTION FITTINGS.

SAMPLE CALCULATION

Target: setting rangeGiven: • heat fl ow: Q = 1,135 Watt • temperature spread: ∆t = 15 K (65-50°C) • pressure loss, valve radiator: ∆pV = 30 mbarSolution: mass fl ow: m = = = 65 kg/h

Setting range from diagram • with P-band 1.0 K: 6 • with P-band 2.0 K: 4

THE ECO RADIATOR CAN BE COMBINED PERFECTLY WITH ALL TYPES OF LOW-TEMPERATURE SYSTEMS SUCH AS HEAT PUMPS, SOLAR PANELS AND BIOMASS INSTALLATIONS.

MORE SUITABLE FORRenewable energy!

Considering the limited number of days a year that a radiator has to operate at MAXIMUM HEAT OUTPUT, partial heating with a mass fl ow of 10-30% will be suffi cient to heat a room during 90 to 95% of the heating periods. The radiator’s mean surface temperature will be lower during these periods.

The desired room temperature will be achieved by a traditional radiator with a surface temperature of less than 40°C, but it will not feel as comfortable. Thanks to its serial fl ow, the ECO radiator has a higher front panel temperature, which gives off up to 50% MORE RADIANT HEAT.

It is precisely this increased radiation that maintains a comfortable feeling, even at lower mass fl ows. This is extra important when replacing an obsolete heating system that operates at high temperature with a modern system that operates at a lower temperature and uses renewable energy sources such as heat pumps or solar panels.

ECO radiators are therefore PERFECT FOR USE IN HEATING INSTALLATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN CONVERTED FROM A HIGH-TEMPERATURE SYSTEM TO A LOW-TEMPERATURE SYSTEM such as heat pumps.

19

OTHER BENEFITS!

VALVE CAN BE FITTED ON THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT The valve can be fi tted on the left or the right of the ECO radiator without having to adapt the return pipe. No separate part numbers, no separate stock, no extra price for a left-hand version, and yet still the same short delivery time as for a radiator with the valve on the right.

CENTRE CONNECTION There is a ¾” conical male Euroconus connection in the middle of

the ECO radiator. This means that the location of the connection no longer depends on the length of the radiator, with the benefi t

that pipes can be installed at an early stage of the project without having to know the size of the radiator. There is also an

additional ½” female connection underneath at the right.

CONNECTION FACILITIES FOR RENOVATION AS WELL AS NEW CONSTRUCTION

This ECO radiator has an additional ½” female connection underneath at the right specifi cally for the renovation market.

This is in addition to the ¾” conical male Euroconus centre connection that is often used in new construction projects.

INPUT ALWAYS ON THE LEFT The input on all multi-panel ECO radiators (T21, T22 and T33) has to be connected on the left, irrespective of whether the valve is fi tted on the left or on the right.

EASIER TESTING Using our installation template enables the heating installation and the pipes to be fully tested without the radiators having to be in place.

QUICK CONNECTION The ¾” conical male Euroconus centre connection allows the pipes to be connected directly to the ECO radiator without an intermediate coupler. This reduces the risk of leakage and makes installation faster.

APART FROM THE UNIQUE FEATURES ALREADY MENTIONED, THE ECO RADIATOR ALSO OFFERS NUMEROUS OTHER ADVANTAGES FOR END USER INSTALLERS AS WELL AS WHOLESALERS .

THE HENRAD LOW-TEMPERATURE VALVE RADIATOR WITH SERIAL FLOW TECHNOLOGY, BOTH A CENTRE AND LATERAL BOTTOM CONNECTION AND A PRE-SET VALVE INSERT, WHICH CAN BE FITTED ON THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE OF THE RADIATOR.

TECHNICAL INFORMATIONHenrad Premium ECO

THE LOW-TEMPERATURE VALVE RADIATOR SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED FOR ENVIRONMENTS WHERE HYGIENE AND SAFETY ARE ALL-IMPORTANT, WITH SERIAL FLOW TECHNOLOGY, BOTH A CENTRE AND LATERAL BOTTOM CONNECTION AND A PRE-SET VALVE INSERT, WHICH CAN BE FITTED AND THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE OF THE RADIATOR.

TECHNICAL INFORMATIONHenrad Hygiene ECO

• Low-temperature panel radiator made from high-quality steel, with serial flow technology (water flows first through the front panel). This results in high energy efficiency, maximum radiation (even in low-temperature heating systems), faster heating rate and less waste of energy.Optimised in accordance with the requirements of EN442, EN12831 and DIN 4701-10.

• Quality assurance in accordance with ISO 9001. Heat output tested in accordance with EN442. Product quality certified by RAL.• Galvanised version available on demand.

FINISHING Without upper grille or side panels

PRE-INSTALLED Pre-set Heimeier 4368 or 4369 valve insert, ECO air vent and blind plugs

VALVE INSERT The integrated adjustable valve insert (without thermostatic head) is factory-fit on the right side of the radiator, CEN certified, tested in accordance with EN215 and compatible with thermostatic heads M30 x 1.5 mm. For types 20 and 30 the valve insert can also be fitted on the left side of the radiator, a left version for a type 10 radiator is available on request. The thermostatic valve insert is factory-set in relation to the size of the radiator. This pre-setting ensures optimum throughput in the radiator. Factory setting for two-pipe systems, also suitable for one-pipe systems (as long as the valve insert is adjusted to position 8).
