Handling of NACS Codes for Plenti
Background
NACS Codes are an industry-standard coding system used across the US convenience and fuel retailing industry. They facilitate the ability to benchmark versus industry trends, inventory management, vendor negotiations and more.
Branded Wholesalers are already using NACS Codes for payment — they are currently referenced in the EM Card Guide (sec 1.21–1.23). NACS Codes are a critical enabler to operate the Plenti program and to capitalize on the marketing potential of this game-changing program. These three-digit codes are associated with petroleum and merchandise products and site services and will be passed in each loyalty transaction to the Plenti host where decisions on earn and redeem are made.
Prior to going live with Plenti, each site’s POS system must be properly configured. BWs are responsible for ensuring any of their company-owned or dealer sites participating in Plenti are using the NACS Codes properly.
There are two primary uses of these NACS Codes in Plenti:• Marketing Promotions: Some basic promotions will be defined as the program is executed using the
NACS Codes. For example, there may be a promotion for “triple points for premium fuel” or “double points for purchasing a car wash.” The NACS Codes must be associated with these products to execute the promotions correctly and consistently.
• Exclusions: Specific products and services are excluded from earning Plenti Points or redeeming points for purchase. These include alcohol, tobacco, lottery and certain prepaid cards. NACS Codes for these general categories must be associated with these products. If there are specific excluded items by state, they would fall under this parameter (for example, milk in PA). In accordance with your participation agreement, if there are other products that should be excluded at your sites, please bring these to ExxonMobil’s attention.

NACS Codes Requirements
NACS Codes Requirements:The following are the minimum requirements for defining and associating the NACS Codes to products and services:
1. All excluded items must have correct NACS Codes assigned — only to the second digit for alcohol, tobacco and lottery. For example, all alcohol products can be assigned 480 and that can be assigned at the department level (not needed on every item). The Plenti host will exclude anything in the range 480-489. Milk (461) needs to be assigned to the third digit as some states do not allow milk to participate in loyalty programs.
2. BW/sites are free to assign at a lower level of detail; for example, beer (481) and wine (483).3. Gift cards and third-party cards require the third digit detail.4. The following items must be coded to the third digit as they may be used for basic promotions:
i. All fuel sold at site (001–099) (completed during POS setup).ii. Car wash (102).iii. Mobil 1 (128).iv. General dispensed beverages. For example, hot dispensed beverage (431) and cold dispensed
beverage (432). BWs are free to code the entire category to the third digit of detail.v. General deli. (Similar to general dispensed beverages, BWs are free to code the entire category
to the third digit of detail. For example, package sandwiches/deli products (491) and prepared foods (492), etc.)
Implementation or Operating Model:All POS systems are initially configured with the NACS Codes for fuel. There are two common methods for maintaining the NACS Codes and their association with items at site:
• Locally maintained at site: Each POS system has the tools to define items, group them into departments and associate NACS Codes at item or department level.
• Centrally maintained pricebook: Items are defined centrally in a pricebook with NACS Codes correctly associated. These are then sent to each site and the local pricebook updates the POS system at each site.
There is not a requirement for a pricebook or scanning at site. However, as the Plenti program matures and promotion opportunities arise, there may be advantages in year 2 and beyond to be able to recognize products using their UPC Codes. These are typically maintained in a pricebook and captured via scanning at site.
Questions? Please contact [email protected] or call the Plenti hotline at 1-703-665-1266.

Information and Assistance:• A current list of NACS Codes is on the next page. A list of NACS Codes is also included in the
BW Plenti Participation Agreement.• A current list of codes will be maintained on the MRC as a convenient reference, with
communications conducted by ExxonMobil should there be any changes to the list.• The detailed exclusion rules can be found in the BW Plenti Participation Agreement.• Instructions for adding or modifying the NACS Codes on each of the POS types are provided in
this manual.• Work is in progress to provide detailed instructions to maintain the NACS Codes in the four or five
most commonly used back-office systems (for example: PDI, Add Systems, Factor).• W. Capra is available to assist with implementing the NACS Codes properly and efficiently. They can
be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 1-703-665-1266.
Compliance:We are investigating methods to ensure compliance, more details to come later. This information will be passed onto Field Marketing personnel for follow-up and discussion with the BWs.

Servicing & Support
Plenti Help
Servicing and supporting our consumers is important to our success. With the launch of Plenti, the importance grows even more. Listening to consumers’ problems and then knowing where to go for help is the name of the game. With Plenti, most consumer issues can be addressed by one of two sources of help:
• Plenti Help (Plenti.com, Plenti mobile app or Plenti Call Center: 1-855-PLENTI1).• Card Site Device Help Desk: Call your CSD support number listed in your card guide and select the
appropriate prompt for loyalty support. For your added convenience, the POS numbers are: Gilbarco and Verifone: 1-866-603-6483, Wayne: 1-800-866-6762.
Consumer FAQs Correct Source of HelpI lost my card, how can I get another? This is a question about the Plenti program. To help
this consumer in-store, you can offer them another Plenti card and let them know they can merge the two accounts by calling the Plenti Call Center at 1-855-PLENTI1.
I was looking over my receipts earlier this morning, and I noticed that I didn’t receive any points for buying my cigarettes. Can you help me out?
This is a question about the Plenti program. Explain to the consumer that some items are not eligible for Plenti points (such as alcohol, tobacco and lottery). Show the consumer the product exclusions guide placed at your register. If they are still confused, direct them to contact Plenti for more information (Plenti.com, the Plenti app or the Plenti Call Center found on the back of the card: 1-855-PLENTI1).
The technology at your site is running correctly when it does NOT give points for these items.
My account is telling me that I used 2,000 points over the weekend at this location, but I’m positive I didn’t use my card here. Can you help me?
This is a question about the Plenti program. It is unlikely that the technology at the site malfunctioned, and it is more likely a fraudulent charge. You should direct the consumer to the Plenti Call Center number found on the back of their card: 1-855-PLENTI1.
Can I get help finishing sign-up for Plenti? This is a question about the Plenti program. This consumer needs help signing up for their Plenti account. You should direct the consumer to Plenti.com or the Plenti app. If the consumer doesn’t have access to the Internet or a smart phone, tell them to call the Plenti Call Center number on the back of their card: 1-855-PLENTI1.
Can I change my personal information with Plenti? This is a question about the Plenti program, specifically a question about their Plenti personal information. You should direct the consumer to Plenti.com or the Plenti app.

Consumer FAQs Correct Source of HelpI tried using my points at the gas pump just now, and it gave me an error. My account tells me I have points saved up, so I’m very confused.
This is a question about the Plenti technology. There may be something wrong with the Plenti technology at your site. You should call the Card Site Device Help Desk to resolve the problem.
It is also wise to ask the consumer whether their card has worked at other sites/partners. If it has not been working, you may want to direct them to the number for the Plenti Call Center, which is found on the back of the card: 1-855-PLENTI1.
Whenever I shop at this location, I never seem to get points for my purchases. The card works fine everywhere else. Any ideas?
This is a question about the Plenti technology. When the consumer claims their card has been working elsewhere, it is safe to assume that there is something wrong with the technology at your site. You should call the Card Site Device Help Desk to resolve the problem.
Pump number four doesn’t read my card. This is a question about the Plenti technology. When the consumer claims their card works at other pumps, it is safe to assume that there is something wrong with the technology at that pump. You should call the Card Site Device Help Desk to resolve the problem.
The car wash prompt at the pump has disappeared.
This is a question having to do with malfunctioning technology at the pump and not with the Plenti program. You should call the Card Site Device Help Desk to resolve the problem.
Plenti cards are not working — no error message is displayed.
This is a question about the Plenti technology. This has to do with malfunctioning technology at the pump. You should call the Card Site Device Help Desk to resolve the problem.
