WellnessIf you are what you eat, what are you? Making conscious eating choices
that support your health and well-being can be as simple as choosing to
eat fruit for breakfast, rather than a pastry. Some other healthful choices
you can make:
• Choose fresh, organically grown seasonal produce. Organic produce has
the highest levels of nutrition available. Organic produce is grown in
accordance with nature and is free of pesticide, herbicide, hormones and
genetic modifications.
• Eat a rainbow. Focus on eating a variety of fruits and vegetables,
preferably in a range of colors!
• Shop the perimeter of your grocery. Fresh, non-processed foods are
stored on the perimeter walls of your grocery. Choose the bulk of your
groceries from this area.
• Eat dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. Dark chocolate contains
healthful antioxidants.

between a novice and a master performer is
the ability to make finer distinctions between
what constitutes an average performance
and an exceptional performance.
QUESTION:

to developing mastery? When have you noticed a connection between your
ability to make distinctions and your level of mastery in a particular area?

performance that led to your ability to improve your performance.
FACILITATOR NOTES:
The intent of this exercise is to have the Interns(s) reflect on how one moves
from a basic level of skill to a higher level of skill. Be prepared to share your
own example of how you have developed mastery in a specific area.
You might share an example of an experience you had as a student. For
example, “I was surprised in school to realize that I was learning everything
there was to know about haircutting in the Institute. Everything beyond that
was really a practice in figuring out how to get better and better at the things I
had already learned.”

You may choose to assign the reading of this section, prior to the review in
class. Be prepared to share the following:
• Your Institute’s expectations on the timeline for achievement of
certification.
• How you will support certification, including the classes and coaching
available.
• The process for determining when an educator is scheduled for an
upcoming certification.
An Aveda Institute student learns the basic skills that will serve as a
foundation for a successful career in the Aveda network of salons and
spas. Once an Institute graduate begins their career in an Aveda salon/spa,
there are many opportunities for continued education. In-salon education,
regional distributor education and advanced training offered in the Aveda
Advanced Academies are all focused on enhancing the collective technical
mastery of the Aveda network. And, it all begins with the fundamental, core
principles learned from you, an Aveda Institute Educator.
To support you in your continued development of technical mastery, Aveda
has created the Aveda Institute Educator Technical certification program.
This program is designed to create consistency and technical excellence in
the delivery of the Aveda Institute curriculum.
In this module, you will find an overview of the technical certification
process.

Technical Certification Outline
Welcome to the Aveda Technical Certification process. The information in
this document will prepare you for your certification and answer many of the
questions that you may have about the process.
The certification program is designed to support your personal growth
and technical skill development throughout your career as an Aveda
Institute Educator. By supporting you in gaining the highest level of skill
and knowledge, you will be able to provide our students an education
that inspires passion for their craft and establishes the Aveda point of
difference.
This process has been created to set you up for success. There are three
levels of certification in this self-directed career opportunity:
Educator Level: At the Educator level of certification, emphasis is placed
on assessing and refining your technical skills, as defined by the
Aveda Curriculum.

Aveda Institute Certified Educator
Coach Level: At the Coach level of certification,
emphasis is placed on assessing and refining
your technical skills, as well as your ability to
coach others in their skill development.
Ongoing Coach Development Level: Ongoing
development focuses on leadership and
sharing mastery. Career opportunities
include twice per year Professional Education
Update trainings, which will inspire, build
presentation, technical and mentoring skills
to create a strong relationship throughout the
Aveda network.
This is an ongoing process for any Educator
at the Aveda Institutes. We look forward to
working with you on the certification process
and are here to answer any additional
questions you have. Included you will find
the “Technical Certification Guide,” which will
further explain the certification criteria and
process.

Technical Certification
Outlined below, you will find the format that all Aveda Institute
Technical Certifications will follow. To prepare for your certification,
make sure you have reviewed the following:
• Aveda Curriculum Textbooks and technical DVD’s.
• All techniques/applications pertaining to your domain.
• Aveda Service Wheel for your domain (cosmetology, esthiology or
massage).
Technical Information: During certification, you will be assessed on
your ability to clarify the information and establish the expectations
of the techniques and applications. This is not an assessment of your
ability to create a lesson plan about the subject, rather your ability to
demonstrate your understanding of the techniques and applications.
Aveda Technical Coaches will assess all technical certifications. All
educators will have an opportunity to meet privately with the Coaches
to receive their results and feedback. During your certification you will
be expected to:
• Reference the Aveda Curriculum and use proper terminology.
• Outline the sequence of procedure.
• Identify the technical checkpoints.
• Identify proper body position for both the technician and the guest.
• Identify the proper use of tools including product to be used.
• Complete the technical steps in the Service Wheel Delivery form.
• Complete the technical discipline in a reasonable amount of steps
that is consistent with the original design objective.
• Identify all sanitation and safety requirements associated with the
process.

Share with your Intern(s) that you will communicate with them regarding
Institute education they should attend to prepare for their technical
certification. Ideally, they should prepare for technical certification within
the first 6-12 months of their Institute career.

Technical certification is offered within your Institute. As you progress
through your technical training, you and your facilitator will determine
when you should be scheduled for an upcoming certification.
