OVERVIEW

Since 2017, some Sea-Doo® models have hulls and decks made of an acrylic andABS thermoformed outer skin, and an inner layer of fiberglass and polyester resin, both compressed in a closed mold (CM-tec).The acrylic surface can be painted and repaired. The procedure and the productsare similar to the one used by the automotive industry.Follow recommendations describe in this document to obtain good results on theacrylic surface.

NOTICE Failing to follow the recommendations may result in a poor qualityof repair or even damage to the acrylic/ABS surface.

For OPTIMUM results, the service of an automotive or boat body shop is highly rec-ommended.

IMPORTANTBRP strongly recommends providing a copy of this document to your local body shop

before performing a repair to obtain a good result on the acrylic surface.

The results may vary depending on the affected area.

SPECIAL CARE - GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Removing Decals or GlueResiduesNOTICE Do not use a heat gun to

remove decals.

BRP recommends the use of waterand light detergent mixture or WD-40.Here is an example of the damagescaused by incompatible products onthe acrylic surface.

✗GooGone

Fuel SpillageNOTICE Make sure to thoroughly

clean fuel spillage by simply wip-ing out the excess. Failure to cleanfuel spillage may weaken the sur-face causing small surface damagecalled “crazing”.

WashingWash the vehicle with a solution ofmild soap or detergent and lukewarmwater.Use a clean soft cloth, applying onlylight pressure.

Rinse with clear water and dry with adamp cloth or chamois.

PolishingOccasionally polishing with a goodacrylic-safe cleaner and polish.Apply a thin, even coat with a soft cleancloth and polish lightly with cotton flan-nel.

NOTICE When using new prod-ucts, it is good practice to test theproduct on a hidden surface area.

Aggressive Liquids andSolventsIf a cleaning liquid or organic solvent isused, it should be dried as soon a pos-sible to avoid chemical attack on theacrylic surface. This time can be veryshort.Occasionnally, the crazing can occur upto a few hours after wiping off.Washing the affected area with a solu-tion of mild soap or detergent and luke-warm water may minimize and/or elim-inate crazing

Heat GunNOTICE Do not use a heat gun to

remove decals or while performinga repair.– Carpets replacement– Pump support removal– Ride plate removal– Etc.

If heated in the same area too long, thehigh temperature could cause surfacedamages.

Storage Shrink WrapWhen shrink wrapping a vehicle, sev-eral precautions must be followed toavoid damages to the finish surface.1. Wash the vehicle with water and

light detergent mixture.

SPECIAL CARE - GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

NOTICE Do not use a no rinsewash and shine product. This typeof product may contain agents notcompatible with the finish surfacewhich could lead to acrylic crazingduring the storage period.

2. Dry the vehicle thoroughly.3. Install and shrink the wrap.4. Install vents to allow proper ventila-

tion under the shrink.

NOTICE Avoid touching theacrylic surface with the torch flameduring the shrinking process orheating a particular area for ex-tended period of time.

MINOR SCRATCHES

Removing Minor ScratchesNOTICE Unsuccessful operation to remove minor scratches will involve

performing the ACRYLIC/ABS REPAIR procedure.

Some light scratches can often be removed by wet sanding and polishing theacrylic surface as described below. Results may vary depending on the affected area.

ACTIONS RECOMMENDATIONS

STEP 1 With an 1500 grit wet sandpaper, hand sand with a circularmotion, the affected area until the scratch is barely visible.

SandingSTEP 2 With an 2500 grit wet sandpaper, hand sand with a circular

motion, the affected area until the scratch is no longer visible.

Polishing Use standard automotive procedure.

InspectingIf no discoloration is visible: No more action is required. If discoloration is visible or if results are not satisfactory, perform the ACRYLIC/ABS REPAIR procedure.

CM-TEC COMPOSITE REPAIRS

Major repairs are those that have gonepast the surface finish and in throughthe composite structure.Possible causes:– Thickness of fiberglass laminate– Direct result of impact. Two types of repairs have to be per-formed.The first is to restore the structural in-tegrity of the damaged area. Fracturetypes can vary from a simple crack toa large hole. Usually, fiberglass rein-forcement becomes necessary, espe-cially if the fracture can be attributed toweakness. The final part of the repair is the surfacefinish repair, which cannot be done un-til the interior and exterior laminate sur-faces were repaired.

Outside:Remove the damaged surface fin-ish with a 24-grit disk using a powersander. Grind outward at least 2 inchesfrom the fracture to allow the patch tobond to strong material. Cut enoughpieces of fiberglass mat necessary tobuild up the area. The pieces shouldbe cut so they overlap each other byat least a half inch. For a smoother fin-ish, the last layer should be fiberglasscloth. If the fracture is small enough allyou may have to do is fill the area withan epoxy filler.

Inside:For the interior repair, you can grindmore. This will allow for more fiber-glass material which will strengthenthe area. If the fracture opening is toolarge after surface preparation, youmay need a backing support to coverthe opening. Cut alternating pieces offiberglass mat and cloth in overlappingsizes.

Patching the Repair AreaOutside:The outside should be done first. Wipeclean the area with isopropyl alco-hol mixed with distilled water for amaximum concentration of 50% on acloth, then mask off area. For a smallcrack use standard polyester based orvinylester based body filler. When lay-ing up a larger area you will use mat, cloth and fiberglass resin and catalyst.Use a clean container to mix the resin, mix only what you will need. Followthe recommended catalyst ratio.Using a clean paintbrush, brush themixed resin on the surface. Place thesmallest piece of mat over the frac-ture and then wet out the mat. Followwith the remaining pieces of mat andfinal layer of cloth. While wetting thepieces make sure you work the air bub-bles out and saturate all the piecesevenly.Wait until the repair has hardened be-fore moving on to the interior repair. If the size of the opening is too largefor the pieces to maintain the propershape, you will have to use a back-ing support. It is a shaped piece ofcardboard that fits flush to the interiorsurface and has a plastic layer on therepair side. It is held in place by tape ora support.

Inside:Wipe down the area with isopropyl al-cohol mixed with distilled water for amaximum concentration of 50% on acloth. Apply the same procedure asfor outside repair when laminating thealternating pieces of fiberglass mate-rial. If a backing support was used, remove it before starting the repair. After the area has hardened, removesharp edges of material from surface. If required paint the surface.
